2019 Recruiting Update

Unread post by Rhody83 »

Coach Cox mentioned that coming out of the July Evaluation Period they like to cut the recruiting prospects down to about 10. Below are the recruits URI has shown the most level of interest. I tried grouping them by recent level of interest. Placing wtg on unofficial visits and Cox being at their game(s) last weekend.

Long (verbal, unofficial & Cox eval)

Bishop (unofficial & Cox multi game eval)
Walker (unofficial & Cox multi gams eval)

Mading (Cox & Ty, recent offer)
McLeod (unofficial, Cox & Ty) no offer
Somerville (unofficial & Sutton only)

Gultekin (Cox & Sutton eval)
Wahab (Cox & Sutton eval)
Diawara (Sutton only)
Bol Ajak (Carroll eval - went to AC)

Mass Rival recruits (Carroll eval)

Carroll watched one of his games. I watched him play. He can’t catch the ball. He missed almost every shot. His points came off of putback dunks. He has no hands. He has size and can rebound. A few times when the ball went out of bounds he would go over and kick it up and keep it in the air with his feet. This kid grew up playing soccer. There is no way Rhody should take this kid.

Update from activity Weds - Fri and expected actvity this weekend. Rhody coaches seem to be continuing on their top 9 targers listed in the original post. At least one Ast Coach will see all 9 of the players during this Eval Period (Weds-Sun). No new 2019 targets identified from offers. There are so many events this week (at least 10 events) it is difficult for the staff of 4 to cover every key event. Gulltekin has probably moved up an interest level with the official offer after Carroll whated him at Hoops Summer Fest Weds in Philly

Long (verbal, unofficial) I haven’t seen where Boo Williams team is playing this week. I believe he went to Hoop Group Elite Session 2 (individual players) in Reading, PA. Rhody Ast was there

Bishop (unofficial) Ty & Cox in CA watching him at Adidas Championship
Walker (unofficial) Sutton watching him at NY2LA in Wisconsin. Believe Cox is there starting tonight.

Mading (recent offer) played in Big Apple Summer Showcase (Ardsley, NY) weds & thurs. Playing in Hoop Groul Summer Jam Fest (Manheim, PA) fri-sun. Believe Sutton will be there
McLeod (unofficial) starting to think he has been offered & hasn’t announced it. Carroll watched him at Elevate Hoops Summer Fest (Philly) Weds-Fri. His team won it. Playing in Elevate Hoops Summer Showdown (Philly) Sat-Sun. Believe Carroll will be there.
Gultekin (offer Weds) Carroll saw him play Weds & offered. Played Big Apple Showcase (Ardsley, NY) weds & thurs. playing Elevate Hoops Summer Showdown (Philly) Fri-Sun. Believe Carroll will be there.

Somerville (unofficial) Playing in Hoop Group Summer Jam Fest (Manheim, PA) fri-sun. Believe Sutton will be there
Wahab (offer) Went to Hoop Group Elite Session 2 (individual players) in Reading, PA. Rated one of top players. Made the All Star Game. Reported the RI Ast Coach was watching him at Session 2. Playing in Elevate Hoops Summer Showdown (Philly) Fri-Sun. Believe Carroll will be there

Diawara (Offer) I haven’t seen where Boo Williams team is playing this week
Bol Ajak (no reported offer) Hoop Group Elite Session 1 in Reading PA. Reported RI Ast was watching him. Playing in Elevate Hoops Summer Showdown (Philly) Fri-Sun. Believe Carroll will be there. Plays on Team Final (same team Fatts played on).

I am sure Cox will make at least three stops this week. CA for Bishop, WI for Walker and PA for either Elevate Hoops’ or Hoop Group’s events this weekend in PA. Not sure if Ty is going to leave CA to catch another event.

Edit: Somerville is playing for Team Final with Bol Akok. They are playing in Elevate Hoops Summer Showdown (Philly) Fri-Sun. Believe Carroll will be there.
Long is playing for Team St8ment. They played in Elevate Hoops Summer Fest Weds-Fri & lost in the Platinum championship. Carroll watched him play. They are playing in Elevate Hoops Summer Showdown (Philly) Fri-Sun. Believe Carroll will be there.

Realistically, Bishop and Walker are top two targets with only two positions to fill. Hopefully they decide before we take other verbals.

A nice comparison tonight at Summer Showndown in Philly. Team Final (Somerville) vs Team PYO (McLeod) at 9:30. You can watch it on Baller TV.

Long is playing with DC Premier this weekend. He was not at the Hoop Group event, however several of Rhode Island's targets were. ( Darius Miles, Oumar Kouriessi, Marcus Dockery, Qudus Wahab.) Coach Carroll was also at the previous weeks Hoop Group camp as well.

Carroll sitting right under the basket for the battle of the big men. Both players very physical. I haven’t seen McLeod with this energy in any other game.

So far Somerville is the better player. He beats McLeod up and down the floor. Somerville going at him on offense. A few nice shots over McLeod. McLeod has also made some nice moves.

PYO won by 10. Team Final fell behind big early in the second half and spent the half launching threes.
I would take Somerville over McLeod. McLeod was a totally different player though. He was physical, aggressive, emtional and much better both offensively & defensively. Somerville had 7 blocks and a lot of rebounds. I didn’t keep track of scoring. I would guess they both had 8-10 points in a low scoring game. Somerville has a nice touch from the line.

This is my observation of Rhody’s interest level. Recruits are group by interest level.

Summary from watching a lot of games on Baller TV, Twitch, following Tournament web sites, messaging on Twitter with reporters and following players/teams on Twitter and Instagram.

Coaches are focused on the same ‘19s. Coach Cox watched Bishop, Walker & several of targets in Philly including Long, McLeod & Somerville. Ty was with Bishop & then in Philly today. Sutton was with Walker & then in Philly today. Carroll covered Philly (2 Elevate Events Weds-Fri, Fri-Sun), Reading, PA Weds & Thurs (Bol Ajak & Wahab) and Manheim, PA Fri & Sat(Mading).

Verbal. Long (verbal, unofficial) Played for DC Premier - he didn’t show much in the 3 games I saw. Avg 4 points/game.

1. Bishop (offer & unofficial) Played in Adidas Championship - had an up & down weekend offensively.
1. Walker (offer & unofficial) Played in NY2LA - team made elite 8. Limited game reporting. Only info was 13 points in one game.

2. McLeod (unofficial) starting to think he has been offered & hasn’t announced it. Played in Hoops Summer Fest Weds-Fri & Summer Showdown Sat-Sun. Looked better Sat & Sun w/more energy. Head-to-head vs Somerville Sat was his best game showing some offense and intensity.
2. Somerville (offer & unofficial) played in Summer Showcase. Head-to-head vs McLeod was his best game. Showed offense down low and had 6 blocks. Beat McLeod up & down the floor consistently. Didn’t play that well Sun.
2. Mading (recent offer) played in Big Apple Summer Showcase & Summer Jam Fest (Manheim, PA) fri-sun. Has a nice outside shot. Didn't do much else. Doesn’t like to go underneath avg 2 Rebs/game. See him as a 3 only.

3. Gultekin (offer Weds & Unofficial) Carroll saw him play Weds & offered. Played Big Apple Showcase weds & thurs and Summer Showdown (Philly) Fri-Sun. He didn’t do much in the 2 games I watched.
3. Wahab (offer) Went to Hoop Group Elite Session 2 (individual players). Rated one of top players. Made the All Star Game. Carroll was there. Played 2 Showcase games at Jam Fest Sat and 2 at Summer Showdown on Sun. Good protector of the lane. A few blocks & dunk. Other F on team is really good. Carroll was there

4. Bol Ajak (no reported offer) Hoop Group Elite Session 1. Carroll was there. Didn’t play for Team Final Fri-Sun.
4. Diawara (Offer) Didn’t locate him this weekend.

My rating of the ‘19 recruits that Rhody is active with.

1. Walker - best player, good scorer & shooter. Most needed for Rhody’s roster. Would play as a Fr.
2. Bishop - good all around player, slasher, can jump, weak outside shot. Key recruit. Would play some as A Fr. A lot of competition for playing time.
3. Long - didn’t see much on O. Can rebound & defend. TJ type player. Wouldn’t play as a Fr.
4. Wahab - protects the lane. Can rebound. Plan B if they don’t get Walker. As Fr would play a little if bigs are in foul trouble.
5. Mading - nice outside shot, only a 3, needs to develop. Plan B if they don’t get Bishop. Akele level player. Wouldn’t play as Fr.
6. Somerville - has some capability, can develop, blocks shots, energy, still a project. Plan C. Wouldn’t play as Fr.
6. McLeod - a project, some offensive capability. Plan C. Wouldn’t play as a Fr.
8. Gultekin - I don’t think they should use a scholarship on him. Not the upside like the bigs. Save it for a transfer.

My gut is they get both Bishop and Walker. I feel strongly about Bishop.

This is the point in summer recruiting when even less can be taken from individual performances. Everyone’s exhausted, maybe jet-lagged. Coaches are looking at willingness to still compete rather than numbers. Their opinions on ability are pretty set at this point.

It could be because Somerville and McLeod played in the tournament (more games) and WeR1 only played 2 showcase games on one day. Also, WER1 has two players better than Wahab - Isaiah Wong and Yazid Powell.

Can we discuss how we see the program setting up official visits this fall? I have to imagine that Walker and Bishop are trying to be set up the first weekend in Sept or second. After that, will be interesting to see who else they line up outside of Wahab, Sommerville, and the obvious couple others.

This week’s recruiting trips seem a little more manageable. The big tournaments are in Vegas and Orlando. For Rhody recruits it looks like two Orlando tournaments, two in Vegas and one in Atlantic City.
Long - DC Premier is at Las Vegas Fab 48
Bishop - K Low Elite is at Las Vegas Fab 48
Walker - Team BBC is at Prime Event Orlando
McLeod - Team PYO I haven’t found yet
Somerville - Team Final is at Super Showcase in Orlando
Mafing - L&L Running Rebels is at Live in AC (Atlantic City)
Gultekin - Mid Atlantic Selects is at Prime Event Orlando
Wehab - WeR1 is in the UA Championship in Vegas

Edit: confusion that DC Premier is has a 17U team in UA Championship and Las Vegas Fab 48. Long is playing right now in UA Championship. He is #11. No idea what DC team is playing in Fab 48 (in the top “Invitation” bracket).

Ty is in Vegas as lead for Bishop and will follow Mekhi and Wehab. Sutton is in Orlando as lead for Walker and cover Somerville and Gultekin. Carroll will be in AC for Mading and possibly roaming to another site on the weekend. Cox will split between Vegas & Orlando with his main focus Bishop, Long and Walker. He will also see Wehab, Somerville & Gultekin.

Edit: Coach Cox is in Vegas. Pic of him with Ty at Bishop's on Twitter.

Thanks for the heads up, I watched for a bit. He looks all of 6-7 for sure. The little bit I saw showed a lot of upside ability for sure. He seems to be a perfect fit for the positionless basketball going on.

No one will outwork Coach Cox and his staff. I believe that pic is from last week. Elevate Hoops sign in the background (no events in Vegas). Ty and Coach Cox are jumping between Fab48 and UAA Championship in Vegas. I don’t think any of their targets are at LV Bigfoot Classic (also Vegas).

Vegas and Florida are the main spots this session. Come for the basketball, stay for the weather that’ll kill you.

I was at Spooky Nook last weekend. It’s such a random place for a big recruiting event, but they do an excellent job.

Semi Finals & Finals of the UAA Championship today/tonight. You can watch it free at uaassociation.com. They have an announcer, score, clock etc. It's pretty good. Semis are at 2:45 PT - DC Premier (Long) vs Texas Hard Work on Court 1 and WeR1 (Wahab) vs Team Charlotte on Court 2. Both games are available to watch. The championship is tonight at 7:00 PT.

DC Premier and WeR1 both win. The championship is tonight at 7:00 PT.

Mekhi didn't have a good game scoring. 0-3 FG, 4-8 FT and 4 Rebs.
Wahab has been sitting a lot for WeR1 as they went to a smaller lineup.

Both watch UA Final with Long and Wahab.
Could see Coach Cox trying to make Orlando for Walker tomorrow. Tough flight - Vegas to Orlando.

Team BBC lost 82-80 today to Metro Boston and Mid Atlantic Selects lost 63-48 to ITPS at Prime Event Orlando. Coach Cox on the sideline for both games.

I don't have any information on the Super Showcase (Orlando) Tournament that Somerville is playing in.

K Low won today in the playoff round 56-34. They play PSA tonight at 9:50 ET. This is the PSA's top team that played in Chris Paul's Nike tournament and were on ESPNU yesterday. Cole Anthony, James Bouknight & Moussad.

I am assuming that DC Premier and WeR1 are all done after playing in the UA Championship last night.

Correction DC Premier has moved over to the Fab48 Tournament and beat Team Felton today. Moving on in the bracket round.
I am guessing other players on their roster played during pool play. Today they had all of the players from the UA Championship last night.

The staff seems to have really narrowed their focus to just a handful of guys... a pretty small number even considering the time of year. Hope that means they feel confident in getting them, but I hope their “back-up plan guys” would still be interested and receptive if necessary.

They have stayed active with 8 recruits throughout each of these three weeks. I would say that includes their “back-up plan guys”.
Cosch Cox had mentioned in an interview that they would narrow it to 9-10 recruits based on mutual interest level.
This week’s appearances
Long - Cox and Ty in Vegas
Bishop - Cox and Ty in Vegas
Walker - Cox and Sutton in Orlando
Somerville - Cox and Sutton in Orlando
Wahab - Cox and Ty in Vegas
Gultiken - Cox and Sutton in Orlando
McLeod - Carroll and Ty in Atlantic City & King of Prussia
Mading - Carroll and Ty in Atlantic City & King of Prussia

Ty took the redeye after KLow’s game last night to PA to catch McLeod and Mading today. Carroll have been watching them at Live AC and Summer Final all week.

Sutton and Cox are still in Orlando today watching 16U recruits.

They have stayed active with 8 recruits throughout each of these three weeks. I would say that includes their “back-up plan guys”.
Cosch Cox had mentioned in an interview that they would narrow it to 9-10 recruits based on mutual interest level.
This week’s appearances
Long - Cox and Ty in Vegas
Bishop - Cox and Ty in Vegas
Walker - Cox and Sutton in Orlando
Somerville - Cox and Sutton in Orlando
Wahab - Cox and Ty in Vegas
Gultiken - Cox and Sutton in Orlando
McLeod - Carroll and Ty in Atlantic City & King of Prussia

Rhody83, you have more than likely seen these guys the most. Can you rank them in order of who YOU would want to see commit, not what you think the staff wants. Just for those fans at home to keep an eye on as things play out.

1. Bishop
1. Walker
3. Somerville
4. Long

I excluded Wahab because he seems like a real long shot. I put Somerville 3rd because I think he fills a bigger need than Long.

I have only seen the first 2 (Bishop and Walker) but we get them both and it’s a great first class for Cox (plus Long). Walker specifically with his size and skill set from the perimeter would be a handful for A10 teams to handle.

I am still rooting for Wahab, but I'd guess that 83's list is closer to the truth.
Walker, Bishop and some rebounding/rim protecting big is an excellent class, no doubt.
Given that, I'd rather see the fourth spot go to McLeod. He is too intriguing to pass up.

I still cannot figure out the signing of Long given our need, current roster and the guys we are chasing.
Just my opinion and I know I am in the minority.

Then your post was really unclear to me. How else do you mean Walker, Bishop, and some rebounding/rim protecting?

I also don’t necessarily think you’re in the minority regarding Long.
