Game #14: URI vs. Richmond

Because actual game talk is way more fun than conference realignment talk.

As suspected, Derrick Williams (a former St. Anthony player) will be out for Richmond, which results in this:

"Without Williams in the lineup, the Spiders play with only one front court player - Greg Robbins - who has college experience before this season."

Their guards are impressive- big test for Powell, Miunford, Buchanan, and crew.

Well, I won't act like I'm upset that Williams isn't playing. Hopefully that helps even things out inside a bit.

Gee, I don't think we should talk about actual games, as long as we can
go ad infinitum about conference re-alignment, which everyone is an expert on.

So what's your take on this game, Rod?

Richmond is at home, which helps.
I think URI can defend any perimeter shooters.
It always comes down to the frontcourt players, and what they contribute.
If Nik plays like he did Saturday, it could be a blowout. We need to get something on offense from out three headed
center.
Will we get the Brown rebounding or the St. mary's rebounding?
Richmond is similar to us in size, but with several double figure scorers, and more depth.
Williams is one of them, so his being out will hurt the Spiders.
URI will have to really slow the tempo, to not tire, due to the number of people Richmond plays.
I don't bet, but if I had to, I'd say double figure Richmond win.
Hope I'm wrong.
Any streaming for this game?

My guess is yes on the streaming, as Spiders have a pay-per-view streaming service. Let's see if someone cracks it.

Wow! Powell can post up Kendall Anthony!
That should be a fun matchup.

URI got bailed out against Brown because of their poor shooting. Brown was getting open looks and simply not connecting. This is a tough test on the road for URI.

The Rams will have their hands full with the Richmond guards especially if they have a shooting night like they had against the Air Force, a game the Spiders won, 91-68. Their starting guards put in 63 of the 91 points. Game was in doubt only in the first few minutes at which time Richmond took over and built an 18-point lead by the break. Richmond FG shooting was 54.7%, 61.5% on three pointers, as they put in 16 of 26. Richmond forced AF into 18 turnovers, including 10 steals, all of which resulted in tons of points. The Spiders had their fast break clicking that night.

In the AF rout, Richmond used 12 players, 9 of them had major minutes. So the Spiders will offset any URI defensive intensity by wearing the Rams down. If URI doesn’t come up with one of its better shooting nights, it will be quick curtains for the Rams.

Two teams with very good coaches. When URI wins I am hesitant to conclude that it is because the opposing team had an off-night shooting - I credit our peripheral defense. URI is really weak inside so it is hard to believe that Richmond won't have some advantage there but it might be even enough to make it a close low-scoring game. It will come down to how much offense URI can generate.. Nik, Mike, X and Andre have to score for URI to win. I hope there is a free video feed.

I predict Richmond 66-60

72, Brown had many open looks that they flat missed the other night. I don't call that good peripheral defense.

TJ might get a lot of minutes. I think he's a better match up defensively against their shooters than Malone.

Hurley gave Malone credit for shutting down Halpern from Brown.

If, for whatever reason, TJ gets a lot of minutes, I hope he packed his getting double figures sneakers...........

Malone did a great job but that was a good match-up size wise for him. Darien Brothers starts at SF and he's 6-3 and an outside shooter. I think that's a touch match-up for Andre. Would like to see TJ on hm.

TJ after the Brown game, said he'd rather guard people bigger than him, so he can use
his quickness.
Malone isn't especially quick, so you're right. TJ probably matches up better defensively, but you lose
a threat on offense.

I think we may see the combo of X and TJ on Brothers

Malone's been very solid lately (Last 4 games - 11.5 ppg, 6 rpg, 43%FG, 39%3FG). I don't really see how he can be on the bench with the scoring and rebounding difficulties this team has. He's also the best free-throw shooter by far.
