Jabarie Hinds has come on well for UMass. Since he's playing more, they have improved.

Still, we should win this game.

Is Thompson back? Last time we barely lost to UMass on the road without KI and JG. We'll have both back, but no Martin but at home. I think we win, but it'll be closer than 11. Probably by 5 or 6. However, we've certainly had our troubles vs. UMass over the past 5 or 6 years so no result would shock me. I'm still in shock over beating Dayton, though we've certainly have had our share of unexpected victories over Dayton, so perhaps I shouldn't be shocked by that either.

Good luck to Four McGlynn and Earl Watson, and of course, Rory Temkin and Shane Plunkett with their post Rhody basketball lives.

I have a feeling that we're either going to win our last 2 games or lose them both. I don't see a split.
If we see a repeat of Saturday's game tomorrow, we're not losing to Fordham.
Berry giving the team quality minutes changes what I thought the team would look like down the stretch.
We could actually be a dangerous team.

Both these teams shoot the 3 at a furious pace. How well we slow them down on this may be the critical factor.

85. I doubt we're going to be playing much zone against either of these teams.

So much PT Berry gets, might depend on foul trouble for Watson and or KI.

They stay out of foul trouble, not much Berry.

Of course that's probably not going to happen [staying out of foul trouble I mean].

Don't care about style points here. Just beat UMass any way, any how.

I think you're wrong 78 I think Berry gets significant minutes and we play zone in both of the final games. We will learn a lot about our coaching staff stubbornness if not.

A lot to watch tonight and in the Bronx......

If by stubbornness you mean "wanting to put the team in the best position to win," then sure. Hurley came out and said several times after the Dayton game that Berry earned himself more PT, so we will see him. That doesn't mean that he'll play 25 minutes thereby necessitating a zone defense for us for that length of time. They might see if he can hang man-to-man, but playing zone against Dayton (who was playing without their best 3pt shooter, btw) is a lot different than playing zone against teams that rely on the 3-ball like UMass and Fordham.

TL;DR - Playing less zone wouldn't be stubbornness, it would be the opposite. Adjusting the game plan to fit the opponent.

Exactly. Did the people who say "play more zone for Berry!" see exactly how Berry got into the game? It was only when Dayton had to go small due to foul trouble on their bigs.

It was Dayton's going small AND lack of outside shooting that made is possible for URI to play zone, which makes it Berry Time.

Dan maximized the team's chance to win as much as he gave Berry the very best opportunity to excel. Isn't that what we want our coach to do? Adapt to the situation at hand, rather than going into a game like tonight's thinking "let me play more zone so Berry can play".

Weird that people think Berry is this all-time liability on defense when Four McGlynn has played so much this year.

Berry doesn't struggle running up and down the floor like some have kind of implied. Play him in Man, who cares?

When was the last time that a team threw the ball in the post to a player Watson covered and the guy didn't either score or draw a foul?

Honestly, same with Martin.

Not tracking the statistics of those 2 in the post 1-on-1 against other teams but my eyes tell me that Earl getting scored on or giving a foul is like a 50/50. Then Hassan is like a 1/3.

A lot of it has to do with how they call the game and even how they specifically call the game against URI in the A10. Other conferences let the front court play a little more. A10 forces the bigs to basically stand with their hands straight up and hope the other guy misses the shot.

Watson/Martin provide good weak side help with shot blocking. At times they can bottle up a ball handler coming off of a screen but really they aren't that dominant this year. Not that dominant that Berry is some insane liability that changes the team.

Yes, maybe "Holloway"? It was interesting at the @ UMass game because, every time Dan saw that guy checking in he yelled for AB to get in there.

This is kinda comical, Berry cannot defend the pick n roll nor rebound outside his position. That is a fact and you can see by watching every minute he played this year. Also cant believe his defense is being compared to Hassan's who is one of the best post defenders in the league and will possibly end his career as URI's all time shot blocker. And many of his blocks are against the guy he is guarding, not the weak side.
Seawright, you were the biggest fan for "Earl should play more", have since been proven that Dan had it right, yet are doing the same thing with Andre. I guess you need Rod to tell you the definition of insanity.
Andre is going to play, because he has to, but we might want to trust the coach who sees the guy for hundreds of hours versus making calls based on a good 10 minutes of basketball in 1 game.

UMass has Rashan Holloway, who Earl and Berry could hide
behind.
He's 6'11" 355 lbs.!

BAR, doing the same thing over and over and expecting a
different result = insanity.

BAR I will carry the flag for the Watsons and Berrys of the Rams for the next 50 years.

HM is a great player. If he was on the bench I would say that he should play too.

Thing about HM is he is a junior and the team had a crap year. So pointing that he hasn't been that dominant this year isn't really going out on a limb.

Its probably injury related. I don't mind conceding that but I haven't been saying Watson or Berry should play over HM. Just saying that the team should play a big guy with Martin. Honestly they're all in foul trouble often enough to sub them out anyway.

To me saying that HM is this god of defense is hyperbolic because it doesn't translate to wins or change EVERY game. He has great stats and has had great games. But watch Tonye Jekiri play in the ACC, he will have half the stats HM has but stay on the floor and challenge every shot at the basket resulting in missed shots. Call it blasphemous I don't care.

Like I understand HM is hurt and I hope he gets his career back on track to include his post-college career, but he didn't even carry the team into the NIT.

I like Hassan, but he can't hold a candle to Kenny Green
as a shot blocker or intimidator.
Kenny was a beast and was a major scorer, too.
Once hit 22 shots in a row.

It's cool that we were threatening the shutout for so long, but doesn't obscure the fact that the offense has to be better. If you shut a team out for 8+ minutes you shouldn't be in a 3 possession game midway thru the half.

18 points from Akele and Berry.

Who are these guys?

Pretty soon, people will be saying we're better without Hassan.

Just kidding.

Nice to see Tempkin and Plunkett get to play.

Not the best game we've ever played, but UMass is God awful.

Too bad we didn't have Jarvis for the 1st UMass game.

KI could be a beast next year.
