Pretty soon, people will be saying we're better without Hassan.
Just kidding.
Nice to see Tempkin and Plunkett get to play.
Not the best game we've ever played, but UMass is God awful.
Too bad we didn't have Jarvis for the 1st UMass game.
KI could be a beast next year.
Was this the best game KI has played this year? (First half was really all that mattered tonight)

So, 208, think this team has a shot to win a couple in NY?
If we win Saturday, I will have to say yes. As long as we don't get VCU on Friday.
And as long as some of our players don't collapse from exhaustion before that.

Totally agree. VCU is just a non-starter. Will caveat with, "I'm no expert, but.." What I really like about this team is the way they've changed the last couple weeks. The much more deliberate pace...seems waaaay different than the 'slowdown with the lead' we saw in the first half of the season. They seem to be using the shot clock, and getting good shots late - like you have to when you have zero depth. Earlier in the year, it seemed like frantic runaround for 20 seconds and some sort of heave or bad shot. Now...they seem under control...and when the students are counting down the shot clock, 10, 9, 8.....they're getting a decent shot. Used to be like a mad scramble to get a shot (after 20 seconds of pre-scramble).rambone 78 wrote:So, 208, think this team has a shot to win a couple in NY?

Dan has really calmed down...he's focusing on his team, not the refs, and it's working much better. Of course, it's still all about the players (no way they would have lost at UMass with JG).
Looking forward to the trip on Saturday and Brooklyn next week. Motto: Anyone but VCU!

Dan being calmer has helped especially with later in game situations.
Focusing on the team instead of the refs has reaped benefits for sure.
I mean, let's be real, I'd like to see how we react in a close game against a good team, maybe in the A10 tourney.
The Dayton game wasn't that close, but it could have been toward the end, and we made the plays and shots to pull away again. So there's that.
All in all, the best run we've been on so far this season. Really won't get too upset if we stumble at the end, since we have to be on fumes here with so little depth. Especially JT and JG, who have been outstanding lately, but playing crazy minutes. Maybe JG can ditch the mask next week? He needs all the gas he can get!
What could have been. Oh well, something to build on for next season. The experience guys like Akele, KI, and Berry are getting now, should pay some nice dividends next season.

I'm not sure it's really even a 'what coulda been'...things change so much and so often over the course of a season...you can't bank on anything. This is like the 3rd or 4th iteration of this team...and maybe the most compelling, despite the least depth, so far.
RB, I really do love seeing flashes of what KI can do......

Nice game by Iverson.. Extremely active on both ends of the court.. Hope with more depth next year they can play more transition basketball.. Think Iverson will be even better in an up tempo game...UMass was pitiful.. That being said can't say I love the possibility of playing them next week.. Unless of course they play the selfish, undisciplined style they played tonight.. Then I say bring them on!!

It's going to be either UMass, Duquesne, or St. Louis if we finish 7th, I think.
Duquesne with their style of play is the only team imo that could give us trouble.
If 6th, then we play the winner of the 11th-12th place finishers from the PIG. From the same group as above.

We want VCU to be the 1st seed in the tourney. Or the 4th, which I don't think they can be.
If so, then we wouldn't play them until the final. I think.
That's stretching the bounds of credibility to think we can make the final.
Win 3 games in 3 days? That would be astounding.

Enjoyable game. Besides shooting free throws better lately, we're also passing much better. Berry and Akele are playing great.
Dan has completely changed his demeanor on the sidelines. And, we're winning. Coincidence?
We're winning on Saturday. Bank on it.
208,
People laughed when you kept saying there was a chance to salvage the season. At least there is an outside chance now.
Remember, people laughed when Eli Whitney said he was going to invent the gin and tonic.

Sorry for getting on so late, but I had to watch the last
hour plus of the debate, and hear the spin.
Had a great time tonight.
Always a pleasure beating UMass.
A complete team effort in the blowout.
Iverson was great in the first half and had as many points
as UMass had.
Odd that he took only 2 shots for the remainder of the game.
He had 12 rebounds, too.
Garrett had only 5 points, but had 6 rebounds
and 9 assists.
Earl was good.
Berry was fun in his sumo battle with Holloway.
Terrell had a rough first half and came on
strong when UMass cut the lead to 10 in the second half.
Nice ceremony for the seniors.
Good that the game was such that they all got in.
I got a chance to talk to Preston Murphy, who was there.
Said he likes Omaha, and he can't believe how
friendly the people are.
Told him how Garrett had come along.
"I told you so!", was Preston's reply.
Great guy. Enjoyed seeing him back here.
I highly recommend the sausage and pepper sandwich,
for next year's game attendees.

Re: Game 30: Massachusetts Thursday March 3, 7:00pm CBSSN
Just some thoughts. Hassan is a very good player, but Hurley should never have made getting him the ball the focus of our offense. It really suppressed the offensive potential of this team. If we good shots, we will make more than our share.
Some of the promise we see now has developed over the season and it couldn't be avoided. I'll put Akele, CT, Berry and KI in that category. But, the poor free-throw shooting early in the season that could have turned a few losses into wins was purely a matter of poor preparation. DH and the players need to acknowledge this reality and commit to not allowing it to happen again.
Also, DH's lack of personal discipline during games needs to be corrected next season before it becomes a communicative disease that prevents the full potential of this team from being reached.
Will JG find a way to make the addition of EC a positive for his game and the team's play? Who will be the go-to player with the shot clock expiring? JG needs to be a win-first PG - not easy for someone to step back and do.
URI is much too small of a team to go deep next year. By tournament time next season, Hassan and a real big-man needs to be in the starting line-up. This means quite a bit of combo talent will be wallowing on the bench. Does this mean departures are eminent or we will win one game next year in the tournament and go home. With only 7 scholarship players, there are plenty of minutes to share this year.
Get this straight, we caught Dayton when they were in a real slump and UMASS is awful.

That was the third straight Senior Day win, all done in perfect fashion- against Richmond, St. Joe's, and UMass with comfortable enough margins that the senior walk-ons (Nazarko, Youncofski, Plunkett and Temkin) all got playing time.
Congrats on #100, Dan! Congrats also to Rory, Hassan, Nicola, and Christion for being recognized for making the Dean's List.

Two surprising things I learned yesterday....
Shane Plunkett is married?!? Who does he think he is, Keith Van Horn?
Post game show Steve said that when Earl was measured at the beginning of the year he was 6' 5.75". Was really surprised he wasn't even 6'6". (Go Rhody has him listed at 6'7".)

72, the free throw issues were indeed costly. A few more wins, and we would be close to an at large.
As for Dan, if you've noticed he has really toned down his act. It's really helped with his focus on the team's issues rather than the refs.
It's even getting noticed elsewhere too.
spookydog, when you add the sneakers, everyone is 1 to 2 inches taller.
So Earl in sneakers is 6'7"

Great game, even when Umass made a push in the second half, the rams kept fighting. Good for the seniors and I'm glad we had a lead to empty the bench. If you ever stood next to Earl in person, you might think he's at least 6'8.

Plunkett's wife was pretty hot, if she was the blonde
in the creme and black dress.
72, again with the shots at Jarvis Garrett.
This kid has played with an injury that would put a
millionaire MLB player on the DL for months.
Before he got hurt, he was easily the best player on the team.
He and Terrell have been terrific since A-10 play began.
I also think Dan has calmed his act way down since the
St. Joe's debacle.
I do agree that Hassan should be PF with one of the three
incoming bigs playing the middle.
I doubt you'll see that, because Iverson is proving to be
a better rebounder than Hassan, and very versatile.
He should be even better next season.
Maybe one or two of the bigs can work into the rotation,
and pair with Hassan or Iverson if one is in foul
trouble or needs a rest.
This team has shown some true character, and Hurley
has instilled a bulldog type culture here.
Let's hope everyone stays healthy next year
and our goals will be met or exceeded.

KI has something you can't teach. It's called height.
And he's certainly willing to mix it up.
If not, he wouldn't be playing as much, even with a short bench.
No softies on Hurley's teams.

Nice win.
I thought those guys were kind of short after watching so many games and then kind of comparing what I see from other teams that have taller players. Being a bit taller just changes the way the game is played.
Hope these guys win the A10 tournament. No time like now.
With that being typed, I hope that everything this team/coach/program has learned this year they are able to carry it into next season. URI looked great at the end of last year too. Then this year obviously the nuclear bomb that was EC happened, but I don't think the rest of the characters picked up where they left off from the '14-'15 season.

JG, JT, KI, and Berry have really impressed. Akele too.
Going to be something to see next season. Just hope EC isn't too rusty.
CT, how is he doing? Any chance he plays next week? Anybody hear anything?
Seems like his concussion ended up worse than Iverson's.
SPG, they didn't, but they have now. JG and JT that is, specifically.

Thompson is questionable for Saturday, and he hasn't fully practiced yet. The short turnaround to Fordham could be difficult.
In a more perfect season, playing in front of friends and family in the last game of the season and then in Brooklyn would have been nice for Hassan.

Back to back games for 2-3 days at least, we sure could use him.
JT, JG, and Four could use a couple minutes off now and then......

I said to JT near the end of the 1st half, "Let's go defense! They have 6 points." I was hoping they could keep it under 10 in the half. One or two possessions later, there was a turnover, and a UMass kid had a break. JT chased him down from behind and knocked the ball away, an incredible hustle play. They finally got to double digits in the last 2 minutes when a kid hit a 3, but the guys were just awesome defensively for the first half.

They aren't...I went to the @UMass game and yelled "miss!" at the top of my lungs when they were taking a FT and 'everyone' in the whole place heard it and buzzed about it... (he did miss )RF1 wrote:SmartyBarrett wrote:Same guy fired off a couple of salty tweets last year during the URI / UMass game - most of them he ended up deleting rather quickly.RF1 wrote:The hack for the little newspaper in Northampton that covers UMass doesn't seem to like Rhody fans:
He certainly seems cranky. Being that he covers UMass sports, he is however probably not used to having fans in the seats at athletic events. It must be a new concept for him.

Two points
We're playing our best right now. Would love to see this continue to the end, whenever that is. Last year we ended with the worst game I'e seen in years,
One thing that hasn't been mentioned enough is the character of the kids Dan is bringing in. We're not concerned anymore
with eligibility issues. Having so many Dean's List student athletes is no small feat.

78, they are looking great. I just hope they continue and build on it. For their sake and ours. Give themselves a chance by showing up for the OOC.

I loved the hustle on defense to keep uMass under 10 points for most of the first half. Steals, blocks, rebounding. All excellent.

It sounded on the postgame like Thompson was dealing with the same flu that McGlynn was battling and that's why he wasn't back last night. Fordham tomorrow is probably too quick of a turnaround between the two ailments, but I'd be surprised if he's not ready for Thursday.
