Rhody Baseball 2016 (A10 Champions)

Rams picked to finish third in the A-10 behind St. Louis and last year's A-10 champ VCU. Rhody also received two first place votes. I think this year's team is going to be VERY good - they should contend for the A-10 title once again.

Sounds like a rough weekend in the Sunshine State.
Surprised the FSU blog was able to come up with 3 down...

Rhody in first place with a 13-5 A-10 record after sweeping Dayton this weekend.

I feel like I read about Rhody Baseball doing well every year but then they have a Baronesque collapse and miss postseason play. Maybe this year they will break through.

In fairness to the baseball team their only path to the NCAA's is by winning the A10 tournament. Not winning the A10 championship doesn't qualify as a Baronesque collapse, especially if you win games in the tournament but can't win the whole thing.

It looks like the top 7 teams make the A10 tournament, with only the regular season champion getting a first round bye in the double elimination tournament. Our magic number to clinch an A10 tournament bid is 3 over Davidson and George Washington. Our magic number to clinch first in the A10 should be 5 over VCU because we won 2 out of 3 against them the beginning of April. We have two more three game A10 series left, home against UMass (10th place, 7-11) this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and at LaSalle (tied for last, 5-13) the week after. VCU plays Davidson (tied for 7th, 9-9) the same time we play LaSalle.

Thanks for the info, admittedly my prior post wasn't filled with much in the way of facts, more so just a very casual observation. Did not realize the A10 for baseball is a one bid conference.

Rhody in 1st place in A10 having won their last 5 games with 3 wins vs Dayton and 2 wins vs UMASS
4 games remain with UMASS(1) and last place LaSalle(3)

Plus nonconference games @Uconn and at home against Hartford. Be nice to beat Uconn along the way as well.
Last I checked we have a pitcher who's record is 10-1!
Hopefully he can get us that A-10 championship
Baseball kicking ass of late

Yet we're not even the best RI team. You have to give Bryant credit for what they've accomplished up there.

Steve Owens has done a fantastic job with that program. Hopefully, we are on our way building to that with Cerrato. One of my friends played for Cerrato at New Haven and one of my former players plays for him now at Rhody, both of them have had nothing but good things to say about him

I feel like we have to get over the hump and win the A-10 and get into the dance to start to rise to that level. 9 out of 10 years since our last NCAA visit we've been top three in the league and have failed to get back. Gotta break through!

You're referring to Tyler Wilson, who on Monday was named one of six Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week, along with collecting his fifth Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week on the season. On Friday against UMass he struck out 13 during a complete game win, taking a no-hitter into the eighth. He is now 7-0 with a 0.65 ERA in conference play, holding Atlantic 10 competition to a .113 opposing average. Against league opponents, he has recorded 62 strikeouts while allowing just 21 hits and issuing only 10 walks over 55.0 innings. Basically against the A10 he's Pedro in his prime and he's still only a sophomore. Here's an article from gorhody that has a bunch of other ridiculous facts about his season, it's worth the read: http://gorhody.com/sports/m-basebl/2015 ... 0516sqcv2j

Coming into the final weekend of the regular season we have clinched a spot in the A10 tournament and are tied with VCU for first place, but should have the tie breaker on them due to a series win. St. Joe's is a game back and we should also have the tiebreaker on them due to winning two out of three in Philadelphia, so it looks like our magic number to clinch a regular season title and the only bye in the A10 tournament is 2. We play tomorrow, Friday, and Saturday at La Salle (last place, 6-15). VCU plays tomorrow, Friday, and Saturday at Davidson (7th place, 10-11). St. Joe's plays tomorrow and has a doubleheader Friday home against St. Bonaventure (9th place, 9-12)

I know the move is due to rain, but it's a nice added bonus that they'll get an extra day of rest before the A-10 Tournament.

URI wins their game 6-0 behind seven strong innings from Wilson. St Joe's won their game to keep pace. VCU starts at 6.

URI won and St. Joe's lost, so we're now guaranteed one of the top 2 seeds in the A10 tournament. Our magic number to be regular season co-champions with VCU and get the number one seed is one. Our magic number to be outright regular season champions is two.

Without looking to know for sure I'd say we use different pitchers on the weekend in conference then we do midweek out of conference

Generally speaking, a team's top 3 pitchers will throw Friday, Saturday, Sunday in conference play and mid-week games will typically be younger pitchers getting some experience for the future or staff days, where multiple guys are going a couple of innings.

Really doesn't say much of anything about A-10 Baseball. As others have said, these were non-conference games during the A10 Conference Schedule. One pitcher got his first start. In Baseball it is all about Conference Play to gain the NCAA Bid. Out of Conference Games are not anywhere near as important as they are for the NCAA Basketball. In fact, the Coaches want to see other players in these games and especially pitchers.

On the plus side.............
URI was picked 3rd in preseason - so great to see them win the A10 outright and get the #1 seed in the all important A10 Tournament to take place this week at Fordham.

Pitching was great for URI but some truly fantastic hitting was performed by....
Soph Chris Hess who hit .280 with 6 HRs and 10 triples and 10 doubles
Soph Jordan Powell hit an amazing .349. He was also a very good all district basketball player in HS in Kingwood Texas
Junior Martin Figueroa his .323 with 5 HRs and 20 doubles

URI played a tough OOC schedule as always which helped them tremendously when it came to A10 play. Now we need to close out the A10 Tournament. Go Rhody!!

Double elimination. If Rhody wins with Tyler Wilson pitching on Thursday they then need to win Friday and once in two games Saturday to win the championship.

I just saw him announced for Thursday. I imagine if they need him he could throw an inning or two, but I can't imagine he would be able to give you a whole lot on that amount of rest.

The setup of the tournament really challenges your rotation depth. Seems like you need to be at least three deep to win it.

Junior Greg Weissert on the mound for Fordham. In 8-0 Rhody loss to Fordham Weissert pitched 8 shutout innings giving up only 2 hits, 1 walk, 8 strikeouts

Could be a real pitchers duel today between Wilson and Weissert.

Should be streaming on the A10 website. You can also get the link through gorhody.com
