Week #6 - Games of Interest

Unread post by Obadiah »

CBB enters Week # 6. George Washington achieves a #21 ranking in the AP poll and #22 ranking in the USA Today poll. Dayton got votes in both polls. Davidson got some votes in the USA Today poll. Among URI OOC opponents, Maryland is #6 in AP poll and #7 in the USA Today poll. PC is ranked #14 in the AP poll and tied with Baylor for #14 in the USA Today poll. Houston got one vote in the AP poll

Cumulative record of URI OOC opponents now stands at 66-54, a winning percentage of .550.

The A-10 cumulative record in OOC play stands at 87-39, .690 winning percentage. The conference RPI is # 7 at .5525, just slightly behind the Big Ten.

No games in either the A-10 or among URI OOC opponents on Monday night. Action for the week will be relatively slow since many schools are in the final exam period. That will change on Saturday.

UMass is hosting New Orleans on Wednesday 12-16-15 at the Mullins Center. Former Coach John Calipari will be honored by the school with a banner (see below) being raised to the rafters to commemorate his time at UMass. An article by Dan Shaughnessy in the Boston Globe today took issue with UMass for bestowing such an honor.

Only game of interest on Tuesday evening is a battle between the A-10 and the ACC as VCU pays a visit to Georgia Tech. 9 PM. On ESPN2.

Both teams are coming off layoffs due to exams. GT has one home loss that to East Tennessee State, 69-68, on a trey with 3 seconds left. For VCU, this will be second road game in a row against ACC teams. In their last game, VCU suffered a tough loss to Florida State, 76-71, when they came back from a 14 point deficit to take a short lived lead before faltering in the final minute.

Tonight Monmouth added Georgetown to the list of notable wins alongside UCLA and Notre Dame by easily beating the Hoyas on their home court, 83-68.

How did Jim Baron's Canisius team beat this same Monmouth???

More on the national landscape, Bo Ryan announced his retirement effective immediately tonight. Sad to see one of the best in the game go. A guy who never had top recruiting classes or highly sought after NBA talent out of high school, but always found guys right for his system and always had winning teams year after year. Class act and a great coach, the game will miss him a lot.

ODU hasn't beaten any of the tough teams on their schedule yet.

Tough loss for VCU last night. 0-4 against power 5 schools. Like us it will be an uphill climb for them to make the dance this year.

Tonight's results

In the A-10:

* After a sluggish first half, Duquesne got into high gear to beat South Carolina State, 83-68.

* UMass needed OT to beat a 3-5 U. Of New Orleans team, 103-95.

* Richmond in a romp from start to finish over ODU, 77-61.

* Tennessee-Martin has a 3 point lead over Saint Louis late in second half. SLU has rallied from big deficit.

In OOC action:

* Short handed Iona struggled to beat Texas Southern, 83-73. AJ English did not play, due to minor surgery on a broken knuckle suffered in the game against Tulsa. Is considered day to day. Other Iona players also sidelined due to illness/injury.

* Houston beats NC Central, 73-65.

* Cleveland State in a close one at Loyola Chicago, leading by five with 4 minutes left.

Last week Incarnate Word was upset by cross-town rival, NAIA Our Lady of the Lake, but the Cardinals came into Brooklyn tonight and took it out on St. John's, thrashing the Johnnies, 73-51. Rumors are that the Little Sisters of the Poor will be next to play St. John's.

Does that mean that they're better than Syracuse?

Another tough loss for VCU. However, I think they'll be a tough out every night in A-10 play. Just a little too green under their new coach to be able to knock off these good teams in the end of games.

I'm with Jalen Rose and his radio show co-host - I think it's corny now. It was neat when it was seemingly natural reactions, but choreographed routines? Blah. It's the type of shit that makes people lose their minds about NFL players doing it post-touchdown, but it's fine for the Monmouth bench for some reason.

Does Dan think that way? Critically that way?

Like a loss to 5-6 ODU Tuesday??? Would that make him say WTF?? Why would I pay to watch this?? Or prioritize it?? Or fight traffic after work to get to see it??

Samford was able to win on the road because they came alive and shot 52.6% in the second half to build the big lead. This was triggered by some great 3-point shooting.

BTW, Nebraska is one of the few schools that reports both the paid attendance and the actual count. As RF1 stated, the paid attendance was 14,871, but the actual attendance was 10,471. There was similar results for URI's game there last week.
