Re: A-10 Athletic Dept Spending 2014-15
Observations
BASKETBALL
URI is 9th in spending for basketball, some 2 million behind VCU. Last year's A-10 regular season champ Davidson spent the least.
FOOTBALL
URI spends the least of A-10 schools that play scholarship football. It spends some 2 million less than both Fordham and Richmond.

It might possibly involve the buyout of their old coach Pecora. If scholarships are in the number, Fordham also likely has the highest costs for tuition and room/board being a private school in NYC.

VCU, with no football team, spends nearly 6 million more on athletics than does URI (with a football team). It should come as no surprise that VCU teams do very well in the A-10.

Anyway you look at that endowment figure, it is not good. 112 million. If we have had 60.000 URI Alumni from Rhode Island through the years, that is less than $2,000 per alumni. I just picked 60,000 out of my hat, feel free to get better numbers.

It is also part of the reason URI is hogtied when it comes to new infrastructure for athletics. Even a relatively modest facility like the SADC took nearly a decade to get funded and built. What ultimately got built was a far cry from the original stand alone building plans. The school doesn't have the money on its own and has to beg the state for capital construction projects. I believe the school is still paying off the Ryan Center bonds. I am not even sure when these will be paid off (was it a 20 yr bond). I would think there will likely not be any big new athletics facility improvements until that bond is paid off.

Re: A-10 Athletic Dept Spending 2014-15
It's funny. I'm not an alumni. My son is class of '91. I got more involved with the program when Al was the coach. He use to "pass the hat" to fund small projects, and did in a quiet way that left you wanting to help. Subsequently I did one of those five-year-contributions to get The Ryan Center started.....I always wondered if my efforts were for naught, when I see what URI's alumni [don't] give.
.....My little school [Quinnipiac] has only been around since the late '40's, and has never been close in enrollment to URI, but has an endowment six times that of URI. Not sure if it's the location[New Haven] or, the fact that it is not a government institution. URI has a long way to go even when compared to other, New England state institutions like New Hampshire and Maine [similar populations].

Re: A-10 Athletic Dept Spending 2014-15
I think it stems from the fact that Rhode Islanders hate their State government, and URI is seen as an extension of the State government. It does not matter that URI only gets 8% of its operating budget from the State. Still, you would think this would not matter for Alumni, who should know better. If you look at what the State of RI funding for URI and what comes back into the economy mainly from Out of State Students coming here, I don't think it cost the state much at all to run URI.
If State gives $70 million in Support, and gets $20 million in State Income tax, not to mention sales tax, and the multiplier effect. Hopefully, the endowment will head up in the next 1/4 century, that is if some of the big wealthy URI Alumni put the URI Foundation into their inheritance plans.
