NIT Game 1, St. Patrick's Day vs Iona at 7 on ESPNU

Unread post by RhowdyRam02 »

So after the rousing Senior Day against St. Joe's and the A10 tournament the Rams are back at the Ryan Center for an encore. While we know the team will be back it will be interesting to see how many fans will be back for this one. The first 1000 students get in for free, but how many will be in the area with this week apparently spring break week? Will local fans be energized to come out for this one to celebrate the growth of the team or will they view this as just another year we fell short and decide that hitting up the local watering hole for the holiday is a better use of their time? Earlier another poster said that ticket sales were going well according to the ticket office, but at mid morning I was able to get four together in the second row of 204, which doesn't seem promising for a packed house.

I looked back at previous first round games held at the Ryan Center. In 2003 we drew 5995, which was 109% of the season average. In 2004 we drew 4435, which was 76%. And in 2010 we drew 2734, which was just 50% of our season average. I don't see anyway our attendance will resemble the 2010 year when our fan base was tired of promising campaigns ending short. If we draw 76% of our normal crowd then we'll get 4262. If we draw 109% we come out to 6113. While I'd like to put us down for 6113, I unfortunately think we'll end up around the 4700-5000 mark.

Even that is a little optimistic, I'm afraid.

Interesing common OOC Game was with Delaware State - both Iona and URI played DSU at home

Iona 126 Delaware State 76 - Iona by 50 points
URI 83 Delaware State 44 - URI by 39 points

Not that the amount of the win means anything but I am more astounded by 126 points scored by Iona - are you kidding me?

I can't begin to guess how to predict tomorrow night's score

Anyone have trouble printing out their tickets? I only received a confirmation email saying I purchased the tickets and would receive another email with the tickets attached, but did not receive that email. Anyone else have this problem?

I ordered my tickets by phone after 10:00AM. The girl who took the order
said, "Pick them up at the Will Call window."
I asked,"Can't you email them to me?". because they have before.
She had to ask someone, who told her that would be no problem.
Well, she said they'd be open until 6:00.
I did not get my tickets emailed to me.
Unlike Rhody 15, I did not even get a confirming email.
So, I guess I'll have to call them tomorrow.

I could have done that, from my RC account, but I wanted and extra ticket.
There's no option to order extra tickets on the site.

Really excited for tommorows game!! And thankfully its at home! Unfortunately it's going to be spring break for our student body but myself and other students will be making a trip to the Ryan Center. I don't think it will be sold out because of spring break. I still say it'll be about the same crowd as when we faced VCU. Wish it was during the school session so it could be like Nebraska or GW.
On the tournament I believe we will easily make it to the final four, only about 5 or 6 solid teams in this tournament that got screwed out of the NCAA tournament. I say we beat Iona in double figures. This will be a good learning experience for this young team and a great way to end our seniors careers at URI. Expect a good turn out! GORHODDDDYY!!!

FWIW- I saw on twitter that one of their starting guards Isaiah Williams is questionable tonight.

Also - We've got to hope the local students come out & make some noise tonight. I will be there strictly as a spectator since the NCAA prohibits on-court promotions for these tournament games...so I will not have an opportunity to jump on the microphone and get the crowd going as usual.

This is a game we should roll. They lost to Canisus. I have no idea how their RPI is as high as it is.

Their best win is against 130 Wake Forest. The last time they played a team in the top 100 was UMass in December. They lost. Lost to #53 Wofford in November. Blown out by Arkansas Thanksgiving weekend.

They have no idea what they're walking in to. They played 31 of their 34 games outside of the top 100. 26 games north of 150. 17 vs 201+. The best game they have played this calendar year was Rider back in January with a lofty ranking of #141.

We're going to be the 2nd or 3rd best team they play all year. Rhody 72, Iona 60.

That's how i see it. Was thinking 65-55

We held a much more dangerous offense in Davidson to 3-19 from 3 and 22pts in the 2nd half. We are by far the best defense they will face this year. I easily see the defense smothering them.

They don't play any defense. I see Gil having a big day.

Even WE should get close to 80 against them.

I'll say 75-65. We might struggle a little 1st half due to not knowing them, but Dan will make adjustments and we'll shut them down 2nd half.

Dan does say we're a little tired. Martin isn't 100%.

We will need a few days off after this one, to have a chance in the next one.

91 points? That's a lot of layups and fast breaks.

We don't want to get into a 3 pt. shooting contest with them. That's one we would probably lose.

No, we win with defense, at least imo.

They shoot, on the average, 9 seconds into the clock, or something crazy like that. That's a lot more possessions for us than normal. Also, lots of long rebounds leading to fast break points. Finally, a bad defensive team. I see us scoring the most points since the opener against Pace.

You haven't seen them play, I guess.
I saw them play four times this year.
They have no conscience about shooting the ball
from anywhere on the court.
I think the ball must burn their hands, because they seem to have a need
to get rid of it ASAP.
AJ English reminds me of Cuttino Mobley.
They can score, but defense is a foreign concept to them.
Casmir is one of the best freshmen in the country. He and Garrett
will be an interesting matchup.
Lowrie worries me, because he's so mobile, and passes well. A very good
big man.
This should be a fun game, and I hope it's as easy as some here seem to feel.
As always, fouls are a concern. We need to keep our best players
on the court.

Yeah, they don't want us to be able to set up our defense.

If we are able to do that all night, they don't have a chance.

It's simple, really. The team that gets to play it's style the most, wins.

We should be able to drive on them at will. Not settle for 3's. We might get a TON of open looks, but how many will we make?

They want us to shoot 3's. When we miss, they get the long rebounds, and run. If we play into their hands like that, it will be trouble.

Anyway, with our tight rims, how many 3's will be made? ;)

Iona's season in a nutshell:

0-1 vs top 50, 0-2 vs 51-100, 5-0 vs 101-150, 6-3 vs 151-200, 15-2 vs 200+

I'll be shocked if this one is in single digits.

Ugh, 11 pm. I really want to stay up and watch this, but I don't know if I'll make it. Might have to rely on reports from adam914, RamInLA, and any other west coasters on this board.

100% agree, have a few folks I often see in the summer months that I will mention this to....we want season ticket holders and shut them out of the goodies, stupid.

That's old school "I know a guy stuff" typical Rhode Island mindset.....

Also, remember the NIT is putting in a 30 second shot clock, along with (I think) moving the 3 point line back to the FIBA length. Should be interesting to see how much this affects both teams.

Using experimental rules for these games pretty much tells you how unimportant this tournament means to the NCAA.

I think this will be a tough one for us. Just because we arent very good at putting teams away. Our defense should really knock them off balance. They haven't played a defense as good as ours this year.
30 second shot clock will be interesting
