2015 Coaching Carousel
The Nevada Wolf Pack of the Mountain West conference have the first firing of the season that I've seen, letting go of David Carter after five seasons. He went 83-80 with two NIT appearances during his tenure, but went 9-22 (5-13 in conference) this season.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
It's been reported that Georgia Tech fired Brian Gregory before the team bus left the ACC Tournament. He was probably a goner anyway but they gagged a six point lead very late against BC. That's a big job. You can win there, for sure.
Georgia Tech head coach Brian Gregory has coached his final game as the Yellow Jackets' basketball coach. Gregory's Jackets' 66-65 last minute collapse to Boston College in the ACC Tournament was a final blow to an already sinking ship. Win or lose, Gregory's fate was already determined prior to the team leaving for Greensboro.
Sources confirmed with Jacketsonline that current Yellow Jacket athletic director Mike Bobinski will dismiss Gregory in the next week or so.

Unsurprising. The key is to act fast and get the best available coaches. Thank goodness Thorr did precisely that 3 yrs ago.

Hewitt needs to go. George Mason has just about hit rock-bottom, especially if you consider where they were just a few years ago.

Hewitt at GMU is akin to Lappas at UMass. Hires solely predicated on past success at big time schools (but eventually run out) and name recognition. Not good fits for either job.

Names for bigger jobs:
Bryce Drew, Valpo
Brian Wardle, Green Bay (although he had some "issues" a few years ago)
Keith Dambrot, Akron,
Massielo will have his name thrown out there
Steve Prohm, Murray St.
Steve Donahue, (he'll end up at UPENN, my guess)
Tommy Amaker (he'll be approached by G-Tech)
Keno Davis...yes, remember him. He led Central Michigan to MAC title in his 3rd year. That program was in the tank.

This may have been posted elsewhere, but Goodman says Bobby Hurley should be DePaul's pick: http://insider.espn.go.com/mens-college ... basketball - Man, if Goodman's sources about the candidates for that job are correct, that's a grim list. Howland's at least a capable coach, but the rest? Corbin and Thomas have just been bad NBA coaches. And while Bobby Hurley has only spent two years at Buffalo, the other candidates are NBA retirees with no head coaching experience or similarly experienced low or mid major coaches.Iggy1979 wrote:Oliver Purnell gone. Corbin may be not be a "bad" NBA coach. He didn't exactly have a full cupboard when he took over for Jerry Sloan at Utah. Don't forget: He's younger -- and a DePaul grad.

ESPN Chicago columnist is also calling for Hurley. I think this would be a mistake for Bobby's future though. One more good year at Buffalo and Hurley could have a more choice selection of schools with better support and infrastructure.
If anything DePaul sounds like a better fit for his opponent last night, Keno Davis. He's already experienced at their level, and frankly Keno would not be as picky as other coaches and be grateful for the opportunity after his misfortune at PC. Not that I think Keno is a good coach, but if you are DePaul beggars can't be choosers. At least better than Jerry Wainwright I think...

Could depend on how he does starting late this week.
Buffalo wins a game or two, watch out. Just the way it is.
Maybe there will be more openings soon too.
Even a BE bottom feeder like DePaul is a big step up.

They haven't won since Ray Meyers.
He should stay put and learn his craft, before leaving for whatever job

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
Bobby Hurley can do better than Depaul. He should hold out for a Power-5 job.
The same could be said for Danny if Seton Hall were to open up. I actually think we will see less movement of coaches from the A-10 to the New Catholic Big East as was the case with the original Big East. The difference between the conferences is not that great now since most all the power teams are gone. While the pay is higher, the risk and job pressure is significantly greater. I would think most A-10 coaches will hold out for Power-5 jobs instead of settling for New Catholic Big East gigs.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
Not according to some on another message board.
The A-10 is just a cut above The Patriot League, according to some,
Every league from the ACC to to the A-10, is vastly inferior, or on the
brink of collapse.
Guess they don't remember last year, and all those one and outs.
You have one really good program, Villanova, and a few of has been programs,
(Georgetown, St. John's, Depaul, Marquette, and to a lesser extent, Seton Hall),
a couple of programs that saw great days recently, and will struggle
to return to those days (Butler, Creighton, great coach gone, great player gone)
and you have PC and Xavier, with solid programs.
Overall, not a bad league, but not a world beater some seem to imagine.
Let's see how they fare in the NCAAs this year, before all the chest pounding
begins.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
The New Catholic Big East (NCBE) will likely send six teams this season to the NCAA Tournament and had three last year for a total of nine bids since it was formed.
The A-10 sent six teams to the NCAA Tournament last year and likely three this season for a total of nine bids over the last two years.
Based on the tangible measuring stick of NCAA bids, there doesn't seem to be a vast divide.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
The A10 next year is going to be a bear.
Very few impact players are graduating.
We are going to have to be better, just to stay in the top 4.
We are also going to have to beat some of those other top 4 teams, and not lose hardly any to the usual bottom feeders.
Even some of those bottom feeders, like Fordham, will be better.
I see 4-5 bids next season.
With a better OOC schedule, and some good wins there, we should be in a better position to get a bid, than we were this season.
That's the expectation, anyway.

Are you trying to say the A10 is superior? We went 13-5 in our league this year and are heading to the NIT. If we went 13-5 in the Big East, we'd be looking at a 3 seed in the NCAA.
Teams like GM, Fordham, and Duquesne are really hurting us. While we are still a major conference now, I don't think we will stay that way if Dayton, VCU, Richmond, and UMASS start to get scooped up.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
GM could be a decent program with a good coach.
Fordham and Duquesne? Doesn't seem to ever happen.
As for schools being "scooped up" and the league winding into dust, here's some history.
This league has lost, Villanova, West Virginia, Pitt, VATech, Rutgers, Penn State, Temple, Xavier,
UNCC, and Butler.
They survived losing TEN programs over the years. Does that tell you something?
The major conference realignments are over for the time being, anyway.

Sorry. Stand corrected - went off memory. Ten bids vs nine in favor of the New Catholic Big East. Still, the NCBE is not vastly superior as some of its delusional supporters claim. It was undoubtedly better this year but the roles were reversed the previous season. It is not surprising that the A-10 had a down season this year as 13 of the 15 all conference team players from 2013-14 were seniors and departed. From what I can tell, the NCBE returned half of its 1st and 2nd all conference team players from 2013-14 so it should not be a surprise it did well this season given the returning star power.

Cormac's a good dude. He covers Wagner hoops, so they have a relationship from that.
And he did include this:
But he's certainly in no rush to jump.
URI will almost certainly be offering added contract perks to a deal that has already been extended to 2020.
And the family that left their Jersey roots with so much trepidation, has found New England pretty hospitable -- at least when you're winning.
"Kids love it, wife loves it, great place to live," says the father of two teenage boys. "And I feel like we've gone a ways toward revitalizing the program."
A rising local profile was a first step for the former Wagner coach when he arrived at URI.
And he seems to have built that.
"Now there's a fan base," he said. "When I go to a restaurant or to the gas station, there are people wearing URI sweatshirts and asking about the team."

Gtown and SJU are has been programs? They aren't what they were in the 80s, but Gtown was in the top 25 all year(another top recruiting class expected) and SJU will dance. Butler seems to have the right guy in place with a solid top 25 team this year and some good young players. Difference between this year and last will be seeding. Most BE teams weren't higher seeds, this year they are.

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
He had done a fantastic job at VCU. Sometimes the grass is not always greener at the next stop. He is very young. my guess is that he has a new job fairly quickly. It however may not be at a Power-5 school given his lack of success at Alabama. Would not surprise me if he ends up at a next tier school. He is from Florida but went to Dayton so he would be familiar with Depaul. Don't know if Flyer connections would scare the Blue Demons off given Purnell came from there as well.runninrams5 wrote:Anthony Grant out at Alabama

Re: 2015 Coaching Carousel
I think the Gordon article was fine. He's writing for a local (NY/North Jersey) audience, one part of all that who specifically saw Dan coach up close for two years, is a little concerned about their current coaching situation, and is still wondering what might have been. Talking about coaches moving on is like talking about which players might go pro. Having one of your guys in the conversation is a good thing. Gordon actually talked to Dan for the piece and emphasized how happy he is with the current situation.
As for coaching in general, I think people sometimes forget how good a situation Anthony Grant left Shaka Smart when he left for Alabama and Smart took over at VCU- Grant coached three years, got VCU into two NCAAs and one NIT.
