Re: COACHES ON THE RISE
No Bobby Hurley on this list?
Look at what he has done in almost two years at a college basketball outpost in his first two years as a head coach?
I'm very curious to see where he lands next.
I see him going to Rutgers and then to Duke.

"Every season, college basketball has one or two teams that rise from dormancy to relevancy, squads that make long-awaited charges at the NCAA Tournament and become really fun storylines along the way."

Hey guys, did you know that Dan has a brother? He apparently played basketball at a place called Duke. That is brand new information I learned for the very first time from that article.

Ace, indeed. I believe their "research department" dug up those facts.

Re: Coaches on the Rise
Before we (and others) annoint Bobby Hurley the next great thing for "turning around" Buffalo, please look at the job that previous coach Reggie Witherspoon did. Yes, the year before Bobby got there they were 14-20 and 7-9 in the MAC, which isn't totally dreadful.
But the 4 years before:
19-9 (12-4)
20-13 (8-8)
18-12 (9-7)
21-12 (11-5)
I would say that Bobby walked into a great situation with a fully stocked cupboard of players. No rebuilding necessary. Smart move by Bobby to take that job.

Re: Coaches on the Rise
Don't underestimate Bobby Hurley.
He knows the game, and he knows how to lead.
To your point, Dan has said, Bobby walked into a much
better situation than he did at URI.
Jerry D had a good situation, too.
You still have to make it happen, if you're the coach.

Re: Coaches on the Rise
Other than the fact that they're both coaching basketball, the situations Dan and Bob went into at Rhode Island and Buffalo could not be more different. Given the situations, though, Rhody has the right one, IMO. Bobby inherited an all conference player and also the luxury to take a chance on some players, guys like Graham. He'd be smart to stay at Buffalo for the near future, though. Even knowing that extensions mean almost nothing, he's been extended once and something else is said to be in the works now.

Re: Coaches on the Rise
That makes sense to me. He's still only been coaching a couple years, and he will obviously have plenty of opportunities if he continues to do good things there. Why rush it and potentially end up in a bad spot.ace wrote:Other than the fact that they're both coaching basketball, the situations Dan and Bob went into at Rhode Island and Buffalo could not be more different. Re: Coaches on the Rise
For the coach, extensions usually mean (semi-)guaranteed money. Good for Bobby.

Re: Coaches on the Rise
Thanks, Ace! Love good morning reading!
I hope you have your multi-TV setup ready for 9pm tonight. I can't imagine what that will feel like watching the brothers coach big conference tournament games simultaneously! I will have the laptop open with Bobby's game playing while I watch Dan's Rams.

ATP- I think Bob Sr. describes it well:
“Now we’re all in single-elimination…You’re totally invested in it. It’s a weird dynamic because you love it but it makes you crazy.”
