Next game: James Mason

James Mason was a movie star for half a century in Britain and the United States, known especially for playing stylish, romantic villains, as in Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest (1959, starring Cary Grant). Trained as an architect (Cambridge, 1931), Mason abandoned that career for a try at the London stage. He made his movie debut in 1935, and by the mid-1940s he was a big star in British films, refining his persona as a polite but pitiless leading man in movies such as The Man in Grey (1943) and The Seventh Veil (1945). After great critical success with Odd Man Out (1947), Mason went to Hollywood, and for the next four decades he appeared in a variety of dramas on the big screen and on TV. It's generally agreed his talent, professionalism and distinctive, resonant voice added class to even his poorest movies (the story goes that he worked like crazy in the 1960s and '70s to help pay for Hollywood's first "million dollar divorce," his split from wife Pamela, whom he'd married in 1941). He was nominated for an Oscar three times, for A Star is Born (1954, with Judy Garland), Georgy Girl (1966) and The Verdict (1982, starring Paul Newman). His most famous TV roles came when he was in elder-statesman status, in 1973's Frankenstein: The True Story, in the 1979 version of Stephen King's Salem's Lot and in 1985's Dr. Fischer of Geneva. His feature films include The Desert Fox: The Story of Rommel (1951, as German military leader Erwin Rommel); Bigger Than Life (1956); 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954); Stanley Kubrick's Lolita (1962); as Doctor Watson in the Sherlock Holmes movie Murder by Decree (1979); and as a wicked bad Nazi in The Boys From Brazil (1978, starring Gregory Peck).

Mason losses at home: UMass, St. Bonaventure, Davidson, VCU, Fordham

Mason wins at home: La Salle, Saint Louis, Richmond

They rebound well, which is mostly Thompson at 12/game, but the rest of their game can be handled. Thompson will likely get near his average in boards. He's had his worst scoring games against VCU and Duquesne, but I'm struggling to find any common threads from those two teams (wasn't foul trouble). I don't worry about this team overlooking GMU or not being ready to play- just the standard landmines of a conference road game.

If we play with our usual intensity and play as well as we did against UMass, I want to see a 10-12 point first half lead to grow to 20 in the second half. I know there are no easy road games, but we are getting better and more confident. The two freshmen are now both integral pieces, playing with great confidence. I predict a blowout.

Want to see a young Helen Mirren in all her glory? Find "Age of Consent" starring James Mason.

GMU won't have much of a home-court advantage as far as fans are concerned. They are averaging just 4,047 in the 10,000 seat Patriot Center. They have drawn just 2,682 for Fordham in their last game, 3,376 for LaSalle, 3,535 for UMass. Their best attended games were vs other VA teams such as VCU and Richmond. URI will not be a big draw for them and their record of 8-17 and 3-10 in the A-10 won't entice fans.

It would seem the hiring of Paul Hewitt to replace Jim Larranaga was an unmitigated disaster. It is hard to believe that this program made the Final Four just nine years ago (2006).

Hewitt record at GMU
2011–12 24-9 14-4 3rd CAA
2012–13 21-14 10-8 5th CAA CBI Runner-Up
2013–14 11-20 4-12 11th A-10
2014-15 8-17 3-10 A-10

FWIW, James Mason was married to Shelley Winters. Can't remember who George Mason was married to.
Of course, Mason Storm was married to Kelly Labroc.

Didn't matter for Ga Tech. Even with that 2004 runner-up run, Tech decided it needed to cut the cord. Hewitt had become a feast or famine coach. He had four losing seasons in the seven years that followed 2004. His three NCAA seasons in that span could not offset the losing campaigns. There was little consistency and he was bought out.

Hewitt hasn't done much at GMU. His best year was his first with Larranaga holdovers but there was no post season invite. His only postseason appearance (in four seasons) at GMU was in the 2013 CBI. Things have really gone downhill in the last two seasons since joining the A-10.

Hewitt walked away from GaTech with $7,000,000 even though he very quickly signed on with GMU. The contract the Tech AD made for Hewitt was terrible, great for Hewitt though. Hewitt was guaranteed the money. So Hewitt is laughing all the way to the bank.
Hewitt was not a good judge of talent. Example Julian Royal who was a Top 30 National Recruit in HS. Royal was one of those who was about the same player as a Senior as he was as a Soph - little improvement. Did not like to play physical. Roay goes to Tech, does not produce much, then leaves Tech for GMU - sits out year and has played 6 minutes each of the last two games on a bad team.

I was in George Mason's home on the plantation in Virginia.
Very impressive.

James Mason was excellent as Emperor Franz-Josef in Mayerling,
with Omar Sharif and the incredible Catherine Denueve.
Fascinating, but depressing movie based on a true story.

Hard to Kill reference. My favorite Seagal movie, before he
became larger than the battleship Missouri that Under Siege was
filmed on.
Imagine, he cheated on Kelly LeBrock with the babysitter.

I understand their facilities, and who are we to talk having not made the tourney since '99...but why allow schools like GM to join the A10. This game is a lose-lose. This late in the season while on the bubble we need teams on our schedule that mean something, we would have to win by 54 points for this to improve our bubble opportunities.

Side note---student response on campus has done a 180 since last season. Social media the other day were buzzing like crazy over how pumped everyone was for the Win over Umass. As a junior I cannot get enough of it...

Unfortunately for George Mason they have fallen on hard times lately, but it was only in 2006 that George Mason went all the way to the Final 4 before losing to Florida. They were considered to be a solid addition to the A10 when the likes of Temple, UNC Charlotte, Butler and Xavier were departing. Still a good program that could very well have a Coaching change soon.

Mason was a good add to the conference for the long term. But they are in serious need of a coaching change. I feel bad for them as we were in their shoes not to long ago and it's a miserable place to be.

Is Luke funny? I haven't interacted with him much. He is definitely a serious guy about his work, as you can tell when he does pre- or post-game on the radio. But hard for me to imagine he grew up how he did and doesn't have a great sense of humor. On the other hand, I could see how the son of a comedy legend could end up overcompensating to ensure they are taken seriously. So I am curious if anyone here knows him well.

I've seen him at gatherings, and he doesn't strike me as though he's having a good time.
He's been here for how long, and I've never once seen him smile.
I've actually never met him at any of these, which says something.
I usually get around to everyone, but Luke has eluded me.
