Iverson isn't exactly rich enough to support a pack of leeches. Unless his cousin is footing the bill, which I doubt.

Anyway, Dan will have none of it. What has Kuran done so far, to warrant having hangers-on? His name only?

If anybody connected to this program thinks they are a celebrity, it won't end well for them.

Again, I don't think Dan wants to get burned again, by having scholarships held hostage by guys who may or may not show up, or get booted.

If Iverson is fully committed to having this work out, and proves it to Dan, than this has a great chance to be a huge asset for this team. Otherwise, it's just another distraction he doesn't need.

It's not that anyone is rich, but people smell NBA money
and get into the kid's ear, and hang around him hoping he hits
it big in the NBA.
Iverson was number five ranked at one point in high school. I'm sure he
had more friends than he ever knew in his entire life, at that point.
Remember Lamar's aunt, and then his father popping out of nowhere,
telling him to turn pro?
He's still paying for people's apartments, phone bills, and God knows what else.

Sometimes these type of transfers work out, sometimes they don't. But alot of these transfers come with off the court incidents or academic issues, Iverson comes with neither just high school rumors. Its a good risk.

So, what are you suggesting, Iggy?
That Hurley shouldn't have enough confidence in his ability to mold young men
into doing it his way?
That he should have passed up on Iverson, because of "someone said he was lazy and
had an entourage"??

Rod: I'm not suggesting any of that. When you hear stuff from sources you pass it on. That's what I'm doing. This is not some fan or reporter; it's a source with knowledge of this player.
I think it's worth the risk, but I have my eyes wide open. This is a player whose rating dropped from junior to senior year, who had some schools back off recruiting because they saw lazy play and his entourage, who then didn't produce much in Memphis and didn't get along with the coach.
OK, he has good grades and hasn't been arrested, but there's a risk with him. A risk worth taking.
You yourself said Dan had to be talked into this. Is there any wonder? Are there anything he hates more than lazy players and entourages?
I find it interesting that Dan went against his gut -- something maybe he's never done before. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out. But I think Dan made the right decision regardless.

If he's as talented as advertised, sometimes programs like URI need to take a chance, as it did with Lamar. I trust Hurley's approach to discipline; Iverson will either get with the program and be a boon to URI, or he'll be a cast away like Hare.

I think Dan saying Iverson sought out URI, says plenty.
Dan's rep as a hard-ass is well known.
Maybe Iverson decided Paris Island was better than
continuing his unproductive ways, going somewhere else.
Dan said he could have gone to places with "looser" atmosphere.
I'm happy Iverson is here, and have confidence that Dan can turn him around.
I've read some here comparing Iverson's situation to Hare's.
Other than clashing with their coach, I don't see it as comparable.
PC people point to Sidiki Johnson, who Cooley couldn't turn around,
despite Johnson being highly rated at one time.
Everyone is different. Maybe Iverson will thrive here and everyone
will live happily ever after?
Time will tell.

The very same Sidiki Johnson that Hurley coached at St. Benedict's. It's not just a match between player and coach, it's also the circumstances that bring them together and whatever each needs at the time.

In his first year, Dan only would take transfers he had a history with. On the court that has been met with mixed results, but off the court they came as advertised: no problems. Now that the program is a little bit established he can take a risk. He will put Iverson on a short lease because Hurley doesn't want to screw with the great chemistry this team has.

Sure, he would have taken him, and let him rot on the bench
for a year, like he did with Scott Hazelton.

Lots has been said. I agree with all the positive and say who cares if he has an entourage.

What about APR kid seems to be stellar in the classroom. If he doesn't help on the court.....

Sidiki is a great comparison. Talented players are worth the risk. Iverson is light years ahead of Sidiki. Great risk reward opp for Hurley

I don't know, Rod. CFL was looking for some less than desirable types towards the end. If this kid was accused of killing a coach, he might have gotten off the bench a little quicker that Hazelton. lol

they showed him in the huddle...i think he is the tallest player on the team. When they play 4 guards next year, one will be 6'8"-6'9"!

Yes, when they were standing in line for the national anthem, he's definitely taller than anyone else on the team. It looks like he's a legit 6'9".

Can't wait to see him in a Ram uniform.

It's on the game replay through Cox. They show close-ups of him shooting, and there are some distinctive *clanks* seeming to come from the direction of the basket off camera. Keep shooting, Kuran!

Around the 16 min media timeout in the first half, give or take. They show his face near the bench, then show him shooting around a bit - there are 4 distinct clangs as well.

Would love to see an interview with Kuran about his process in transferring, why he looked at us, and how he sees himself fitting in. I'm sure we wouldn't get much in the way of why he left Memphis, but I'm sure the whole story would be quite interesting.

I know people want to hear from Iverson, but the focus right now is purposefully on the part of the team that is playing. It's best to let him settle in and get used to how things are done.

But here's a nice summary:
http://www.coxhub.com/articles/kuran-iv ... ce=twitter

An excerpt-

What URI Provides

After an up and down career, Rhody offers Iverson a chance to come back home and write the final chapter of his college basketball journey. More importantly though, they have the type of situation that is well suited to bring the best out of him.

Iverson has the potential to make a career in the game of basketball and in Dan Hurley he will be playing for a man that has developed his fair share of pros. That type of resume brings instant credibility. Combine that with Hurley’s reputation for not just providing discipline but also spending countless hours with his guys away from the court and you can see how this situation has both the support and structure that Iverson needs to thrive.

It's probably only a difference of 8 or 9 games, but it'd be nice to have him against PC and to have a few games under his belt before conference play.

Speaking of waivers, our former recruit, Kaza Keane
went from Illinois State to Cleveland State, and
was granted a waiver to play this year, without sitting out.
Can't imagine what the reason for granting the waiver was for,
but it would seem Iverson has a decent shot at getting his.

I wonder if they have a different approach to Iverson. Just considering they have more experience with it and the level of competition than the original transfer brigade.

I'm hoping he hits the ground able to play defense and not turn the ball over. Everything else will come.

The other guys took years to figure out those things.

Problem is, SPG, that he really didn't play much for two years at Memphis.
He's a fine athlete, better than the original transfers.
You watched a guy come from playing to transferring here, Xavier Munford,
who contributed from day one. No rust. Makes a big difference.
X also knew Hurley's system and methods from St. Benedict's.
On the other hand Kyle Witjer transferred from KY and did sit out
a year at Gonzaga, and is one of the best players in the country.
Ivwerson's 7 foot wingspan would be perfect for a zone defense top of the key
guy, but that won't happen.
Let's hope he gets Hurley's system ASAP an helps from the start.

The advantage Iverson has over the the first batch of transfers is that he's practicing against and watching a much better team than Gil, Biggie and JR had. Iverson sees the defensive intensity every day that Hurley demands. The original three were practicing against Powell, Malone and Nik, who even made Iffy look like a star.
