Last night was the first coaches show I attended, and it was fun. One thing that I was impressed by was even though I'm not a donor or a familiar face Coach Hurley, Steve McDonald, and members of the athletic department all came over to talk. If you've never been to one before and there's one in your area I definitely suggest you go.

My big takeaway from last night is rust could definitely be an issue against Brown. Brown has played two games since our last game and coach said that when the players came back from their 2-3 day break that it looked like they hadn't worked on anything as a team for 3-4 months, with defense seeming to be the bigger of the problems. He said that yesterday's practice was the first one since the break where the team looked to be back on the right track.

And for those that are focused on free throw shooting, that was brought up as well. He mentioned that they've tried a wide variety of drills to improve things. They've tried negative consequences, they've tried positive reinforcement, he's picked the brain of other coaches for drills that have helped their teams. Before the Detroit game they tried a new team oriented drill and he's not sure if it was a placebo effect where the team just felt better after trying that particular drill or if it was a drill that truly helped, but they did have a much better day at the line.

He! He! I can't imagine what kind of whacko would send Dan an email
of a rapid fire free throw drill used by Kevin Ollie........
Nice to hear Hassan takes 100 free throws a day.

Preston Murphy's family was in attendance at the coach's show.....His mom and I believe his brother Brandon.......he used to visit the board as Mitten man.....but he lost his log-in information...maybe ATP can help.....

I saw Taylor Swift and she was with Miley Cyrus and Seanmc from pc........let your minds run away with that......then Norwegian Gal and Gandy joined them.....

I would think Dan's practices yesterday and today were not fun.

Still, you can't replicate game action in intrasquad scrimmages....

Nothing against Dan. Just saying someday.

Hey, if Dan gets us in the Dance somewhat regularly and pulls a Shaka or McKillop and stays, that's fine by me.

Rod might be on to something.

Hassan seems to be improving at a faster rate than EC. His ceiling may indeed be higher in the long run.

Give him some more help inside starting next season, and he might end up being the best big man in the A10. He's not far away from that right now.

Mind boggling if he had Abu or Gustys next to him. Would end up being our best frontcourt. Ever.

Not to hijack this thread, but Sly Williams was an All American, and in his last year,
the front line was Sly, Irv Chatman and Jimmy Wright.
No combination of Hassan and any two will ever match that front court for URI.
Second is Lamar, ARD and Luther Clay. Ditto.

Hate to be a pooper, but we may have missed an opportunity. If it's true we passed on Gustys because of -----, we lost the chance to have another big man that would have been only one year behind Hassan.

You want continuity. Now, even if we land a good freshman big, it's going to take time for that guy to develop to where he's a force alongside our other big men.

The ideal situation has passed us by. The only chance to smooth it over, is if we could land a juco big that can play right away, and as we all know, that ain't going to be easy. Everyone is looking for that.

Dan probably lies awake at night kicking himself for giving that kid another chance.

Rod, they were good. Real good. Anything close to that, with our guards, we'd be golden.

Portland, yes Portland plays THREE 6'11" guys at once.
They aren't stiffs, either. Saw them against Gonzaga the other night.
Two are in double figures, with 56% and 55% shooting. One is 33% from 3!
Not bad rebounders, too.
So, if Portland can find these three guys, why can't we find ONE?
We can second guess the _____mess, but Dan did what he felt was best
for the program at the time. That it blew up was not his doing.
Hindsight is always 20/20.

Went to the Thirsty Beaver for a World Cup Game this year. Decent place. I laugh every time I hear or see the name. It sounds like a strip joint name. hahaha. But in all honesty, it's nice a joint. I had a good time there. ;)

Only question is the Providence Coal Fired Pizza venue does not include location. Their original spot is Westminster Street Providence, however they opened up a new location this past fall in North Kingstown (old Red Rock location) which I have also been to a few times. May affect if you can use the deal for the coach's show or not...

I can't be there tonight but would love to be there on the Eve of the VCU game. One question would be how does Christian thompson's game compare to that thompson's teammate at Madison prep, top 50 guard Brandon Sampson who just announced for St John's today. Would be great to hear Dan talk about the performance of Thompson and of Butts season to date

From what has been reported on here so far, Butts' season hasn't been all that good. Who really knows though.

Thompsons' season looks pretty good. I think he will help us. Could help solve some of our shooting woes.

Butts? He has to be better than JR, one hopes.

Hopefully someone will give us a good report on the doings at Charlie O's tonight.

I'm going to save my questions for the following week at Dan's Place.

Hopefully we beat LaSalle and the Bonnies, or it could get interesting.

That's a painful injury. Still did OK, though.

That will take a while to completely heal. Watson is pretty tough though.

Earl with one good arm is better than Iffy with two. Yikes.

When I can get Dan's ear, my main question will involve our very predictable and easy to defend offense late in games.

Wish I could have gone tonight.

They're doing a report card now. Dan gives Hassan an A. Didn't give letter grades for anyone else, but did give a lot of positives and negatives for each player. Says the program will really arrive when Garret arrives, he's the straw that stirs the drink. Says it's on the coaches to find a way to get Watson around 15 minutes per game. That his IQ is coming along well.

I like Dan's positive attitude and always defending his players. You can hear his aggravation and frustration with his players at times in post game talk, but in the end he doesn't trash his players publicly, he has there back. Not sure I can say that about a past coach and staff. He and his staff are the ones that see all the work these kids actually put in day in and day out.

RR, great reports. Like that comment about Garrett, I've been thinking that for a while.

If JG becomes good enough, he'll run the show, and make EC and co. a lot better, especially at the end of games.

Just wish he'd hurry up. :D

If Earl can play at least 15 quality minutes, our inside game becomes a LOT better.
