He's no longer with Alex and Ani. He's now doing business with
Benrus, hoping to launch a line of clothing to go with the watches
Benrus has made for so long.

I wish Kyle well. Not sure this franchise will be around long. Barely ever heard of this league.

BTW, I used to watch the Gulls that were mentioned in the article. I saw them at Rogers High in Newport. Seeing Manute Bol and Spud Webb side by side was quite the sight.

All I can do is wish Kyle and Giovanni all the luck in the world. Feroce is energetic, a big thinker and gets things done, just the kind of person you want supporting URI!

Apparently this league currently has 84 teams. With names such as the Vancouver Ballaholics, Atlanta Aliens and the DMV Kings (a traveling team).

Sounds like the baseball teams of the late 1800's. Sounds pretty cool. Are the salaries at all competitive with the overseas leagues?Rhody10ltu09 wrote:Apparently this league currently has 84 teams. With names such as the Vancouver Ballaholics, Atlanta Aliens and the DMV Kings (a traveling team).

I'd be more excited if Feroce took a Tom Ryan role with URI hoops than this project. Rod, remember Skip Chernov and the Providence Stars?

Well, he just spent 6.8 million buying Wyndham Estate in Newport,
and is investing in his new venture with Benrus.
Yes, I wish we had a T Boone Pickens type, but we don't,

Right. A lot of schools have sugar daddies. Pickens is at the top. Though these guys can lead to trouble.

The new owner of the Buffalo Bills (along with the Sabres) Terry Pegula is the same guy that donated the 100 million dollars of seed money for Penn State to start up a D1 hockey program and pay for a state of the art 6000 seat arena (88 million dollars cost).

Re: Kyle Ivy-Jones Coaching New Team
Typically, the pay in U.S. non-NBA leagues is incredibly bad. I'm not positive what the thinking is behind this league. It's not like the NBADL is setting the world on fire, and even they will probably have better access to players than this one. Before the easy exchange of tapes and video over the Internet, there was a bit of wiggle room for a non-NBA league to "thrive" in the U.S. for logistical reasons, but it's tough to see how it works now.URI_IEP wrote:Sounds like the baseball teams of the late 1800's. Nice!
My favorite is John Wooden claiming he knew nothing
about Sam Gilbert's host of illegalities as a UCLA booster.
Somehow, UCLA was never on probation, but as Tark said, they put some lowly school
on probation, instead.

I've heard it said many of times, the NCAA was so mad at Kentucky, they put Cleveland State on probation.

My coworker was Feroce's frat brother at URI. He's had quite the interesting life. From being a state senator in his early twenties to sleeping in a fox hole at desert storm and obviously his entrepreneurial achievements. Alex and Ani now "Benrus" and a basketball team haha. Good for him I hope he's successful.

Re: Kyle Ivy-Jones Coaching New Team
I heard that fool Rooke this morning kinda sorta suggesting this ABA is an extension of the old ABA with Dr. J. and Marvin Barnes. If there are any players of that calibber on this team then they need a new agent. This is a developmental team for players not good enough for the NBADL.

Re: Kyle Ivy-Jones Coaching New Team
What is the pay like for these teams? I would think if you don't make it in the NBADL you go to Europe. I can't imagine the pay in this ABA is competitive with Europe??

I don't know about the other teams, but the Providence roster is mostly Div 2 and 3 players: http://basketball.usbasket.com/team/USA ... 206?Page=1. I can't imagine Euro teams would be interested in any of them. I'm not sure what the point of this league is.

Re: Kyle Ivy-Jones Coaching New Team
I think the hope is this league will become a true minor league of the NBA much like the International league is for baseball. So what it is at first is not as important as what it can morph into. That Feroce believes so much in his home state and his alma mater can only bring positives and considering the circumstances, I wish Feroce the best of luck in his investment.

Re: Kyle Ivy-Jones Coaching New Team
For it to become that, they would basically need to be offering more cash than the NBADL, and I'm not sure if they do. I mean, even now, some players are being lured to China for big bucks as opposed to being a 12th to 15th man in the NBA, and the money and accommodations in Europe are also enticing for veterans. All offer easier routes to the NBA than the new ABA.Obadiah wrote:I think the hope is this league will become a true minor league of the NBA much like the International league is for baseball. Re: Kyle Ivy-Jones Coaching New Team
The NBADL already has an affiliation with the NBA. That would be minor league prototype. I imagine players will have day jobs. The D League pays on the average $35,000 to $40,000. I'm sure this pays less. Only player I've heard of is Corey Wright Jr., whose father played at PC.
Again, I wish Giovanni was putting his considerable cash into URI basketball.

A friend I played with in college plays for the Brooklyn Cyclones a 2nd year ABA team. He gets paid $50 per practice which is usually twice a week and $100 per game.URIGONZO wrote:What is the pay like for these teams? I would think if you don't make it in the NBADL you go to Europe. Exactly. These are guys a rung or two down from the NBADL. Not sure who is going to see this team, except hardcore hoop junkies. Could we charm Feroce into abandoning this and getting involved with URI? Please.

Feroce is involved with URI Hoops, I saw a promotion involving his new company named Benrus. That is a great sign for the program that he is involved.

We know that Giovanni is a loyal Rhody guy.
That wasn't the question.
He was involved when he was CEO at Alex and Ani, obviously.
I think we're eternally hoping for a T Boone Pickens to emerge somehow.

Re: Kyle Ivy-Jones Coaching New Team
T Boone is worth over a billion.
700 million is nice, though. So if Mr. F gave URI
athletics a proportional contributions to what T Boone Pickens did
for Oklahoma State, we'd be in pretty good shape.

Re: Kyle Ivy-Jones Coaching New Team
Mike played 2 yrs on the URI subvarsity. Freshman year with Percy Davis & Willie Middlebrooks. A very heady point guard. Thought he might be a varsity walk on at some point but with the recruitment of Eddie Bednarcik to back up Jiggy and his heavy load of engineering classes Mike only played the 2 yrs. He has been a most generous donor to the school.

Re: Kyle Ivy-Jones Coaching New Team
I was on Mike's Intramural team when he was a Jr or Sr and I was a freshman. He scored over 40 in a game which was the record up till then. We even had a running clock and you can guess who never even attempted a shot that night! I barely got back over half court and he scored. Great guy
