Football Game 1 9/6: URI at Marshall 7pm

URI's first game of the season will have them traveling down to Huntington, West Virginia to take on the Marshall Thundering Herd from Conference USA. The game will be on tv in West Virginia, so hopefully we'll be able to get an Internet stream for this one. Or if Marshall is as good as the Sporting News preview makes them sound, maybe we might not want to look for a stream. Marshall is projected to win their division if not the whole conference and there's talk of a possible undefeated season. Their senior QB, Rakeem Cato, has been the best player in C-USA the past two seasons, winning the 2012 league MVP and the 2013 Offensive Player of the Year. He was third in division one in TD passes last year with 39 with only 6 interceptions. Last year Marshall had the seventh-highest scoring offense, averaging 42.1 points per game. Other standouts according to Sporting News are WR Tommy Shuler who they say has the best hands and is one of only eight players in major college history with two 100-catch seasons. And Steward Butler is considered the most elusive RB with six carries for 40 yards or more last year.

On defense they average 22.9 points per game and were 17th in the nation in tackles for loss per game with 7.3. Gary Thompson is projected as the best pass rusher, last year he had 3.5 sacks as a freshman. CB Corey Tindal was C-USA 2013 Freshman of the Year with 6 pass breakups and two fumble recoveries. LB Evan McKelvey led the team with 97 tackles even though he only started half the games. And DB Kendall Gant originally committed to Georgia but is considered the top impact freshman this year. And if all that isn't enough, Joan C. Edwards Stadium is considered the league's best venue.

Rhody mentioned in article. Georgia State had not won a game since they beat URI almost 2 years ago

Yeah, Abilene Christian is an FCS school, but we're not gong to nitpick. When you're Georgia State and your last win was on October 13, 2012 when you were a member of the Colonial Athletic Association, against the only team (Rhode Island) that you beat that season, it's a pretty big victory.

I watched part of that game, both teams looked good, fast and big. AC killed us in basketball about 8 years ago at the Ryan Center I think in the November time frame. TV never showed the only 20% full at most Georgia Dome.

Marshall Fan here. These are some stats and various odds and ends about Marshall this year

Rankings so far:
NY Post 25
Sports Illustrated 25
Orlando Sentinel 32
ESPN 27
USAToday 20

AP Poll 41 votes good for 32
Coaches Poll 17 votes good for 37

FBS Ranks last year
Offense: 7th
Defense: 28th
Special Teams: 17th

Rakeem Cato, SR
Yards Passing: 3,914 -- Career 10,178 -- Marshall Career record Chad Pennington 13,696
Last Years TDs: 39 -- TDs in a Year -- 39 Chad Pennington, Rakeem Cato
Rushing TDs: 6 -- TDs by a QB in a year rushing -- 10 Todd Donnon (1995)

Cato is probably one of the top 5 QBs if not top 3 in college football. He will look to throw the ball 1st but isn't afraid to have to pull the ball down and run it if he has to or sees a hole in the defense. Im not saying we will go undefeated this year but we should be favored in every game.

Marshall has some talented guys on defense and we play the best fundamental football Ive seen anyone play in the last year, year and half. And usually if you play fundamentals it keeps injuries down. Its when you get kids in the game playing school yard football and slinging players around and not tackling properly, that's when you start to see kids on either side of the ball get hurt.

Here is to an injury free game though.

Right now the weather in Huntington is calling for scattered showers though out the day on Saturday. Hopefully by kickoff at 7 everything will have blown over.

Even if everything has blown over there will still be a 100% chance of THUNDER...Hope to hear this a few times...

Touchdown Rhode Island!!!
First URI Touchdown in their last 170 minutes of play!

Tough night for the Rams but I like the play of QB Lowrie. We may win more games than I originally thought.

Tough to have a positive outlook after that, but I give the kids credit for not quitting. I thought that the offensive play calling was a little too conservative for most of the game. The defense was.............

Defense wasn't that bad considering the offense did nothing to give them a break. They forced 3 turnovers and kept them in the game in the first half.

Bressler, can't tell if you are being serious. I'm finally getting to watch my recording of the game and the announcers go from pro to something less than that from play to play.

Looks like Jim Fleming's stellar 95% head coaching winning percentage is going to take a big hit, but let's hope he never gets to .500 cuz that would mean some horrible losing seasons and likely the end of URI Football.

21-2 W-L record now for URI's Head Coach over his career!

Mike Rinaldi's toughness is encouraging. Haha.

But Marshall is a legit threat to go undefeated this season. They have a pretty loaded program for CUSA in terms of the talent on their roster, and a four year starter at QB. This game was all about getting paid.

I have to say the first half was really encouraging. Three forced turnovers and a goal line stand with first and goal from the 1. Pretty stunning against a good D1 program.

Lowrie's performance was pretty good considering he's a redshirt freshman starting on the road in poor conditions against the best C-USA team. Made good decisions and looks promising.

The athleticism of Marshall showed up in the second half and we couldn't match it.
