We should be decent by then... .or not even have a football program by then. Either/or.

It's about time Rhody added some cupcakes to the schedule.

Re: URI Football to play UMass at Gillette Stadium in 2016
It is likely not as big a payday as URI would get with other more established higher level FBS programs (like Syracuse). UMass is probably also banking on URI to bring a sizable contingent with them given Kingston is actually closer than Amherst. Their previous games vs FBS teams at Gillette have not drawn well. Their games with UNH drew better. It is probably one of the reasons that the URI game is being played at Gillette. Their schedule is being equally split between AMherst and Foxboro in the coming years. One would have thought a lowly FCS program like URI would be played at McGuirk. It would seem however that UMass is relying on local teams to help the crowds at Gillette. Some of their upcoming games there are BC, UConn, and URI.OBRAM wrote:Nice payday.

Sporting News football mag predicted our Rams to be 10th out of 12 teams for next year -Albany and Elon are below us.
The only mention of a player was our transfer qb from bc. Sounds like the same old same old - although Albany visits Kingston and we certainly have a shot at Central Connecticut on the road. Go Rhody!

Given our history, I wouldn't expect any respect until we earn it. I'm hopeful we can beat expectations.

Re: URI Football to play UMass at Gillette Stadium in 2016
UMass is signing game contracts several years into the future in anticipation of going independent. They are worried about having to put together a full schedule not having a set number of conference games pre-determined for them. There is now speculation on their board that the game with URI might be moved to Amherst since they might have three other home games for Gillette lined up. The plan is to play three home games in Foxboro and three home games in Amherst each season.
This would suck for URI as I am sure a big part of playing UMass was the chance to play at Gillette. My guess is that URI was willing to accept a lower guarantee amount from UMass (than probably all other FBS programs) for this possibility. If the URI contract allows UMass to move the game and pay out the same amount, it is not as good a deal for URI as once thought.

Where did you see that? I did a quick scan of umasshoops.com and maroonmusket.com and couldn't find talk of the game being moved to Amherst.
Frankly, if they want to move it to Amherst we should be looking to get out of this game. Amherst is an inconvenient trip to see the team, McGuirk Stadium is a dump, and I'm sure UMass is offering less than other programs would offer for a buy game. In other words, if this game isn't being played at Gillette, there's no good reason for us to play this game.

Who cares where the game is if they're paying us?
It seems unlikely that we would renegotiate a contract.
Gilette would be nice, but the $ are why this game was scheduled.

You are missing the point. UMass likely pays far less than most FBS schools. URI probably was willing to accept less money in exchange for playing at nearby Gillette, a site Ram players and fans would be excited for. Playing at McGuirk is nothing new for URI and to do so for well below market value is not a good deal for Rhody.rhodyrudder wrote:Who cares where the game is if they're paying us?

Exactly. We could get more money to play other schools. It's ok to take less money for an experience. It's not ok to take less money for McGuirk Stadium.RF1 wrote:You are missing the point. I really don't think we are in a position to protest. Maybe some wins and we could set some terms with a school like UMASS.
If it is less money we may be making that up by saving on travel expenses. Flying to Marshall with 80-100 players, coaches, trainers, etc. is a big difference from a bus to MA.
