Imagine having an NBA point guard on your roster and playing him off the ball so a sub 30% shooter could jack up 6 a game.
One of the many things that makes DH a great coach is he understands the importance of line of authority within the team concept.
DH is in charge and everyone falls in line under him to fill their roles. That doesn’t mean that Dan is a dictator because I believe he completely trusts his assistants and players with freedom within their roles.
Conversely, DC could never implement that line of authority here for whatever reason ( like lack of confidence, inexperience, fear of failure, etc. ).
In hindsight, he should have delivered and backed up with clear, decisive action that the coach is in charge and no player is bigger than the team or the program.

Thorr does not deserve praise for the success Hurley is having after URI.

Yeah and we shouldn’t celebrate players in the NBA either!

Ron Petro hired a National Coach of the Year and National Championship winner as well.

Word on the street in Providence back in the day was that another player hit Ketvirtiz with the tire iron but Marvin knew Gavitt wouldn’t kick Marvin off the team but would throw the other kid out of school. So Marvin took the hit for the other kid.

Just saw this, Ray Johnson, former Narragansett kid, SKHS and PC player passed, age 77. For me, it was strange he did not go to URI. Decent teams during his years I recall.

Yes, we had some good teams in the late 60s/early 70s with some of our all time greats like Art Stephenson, Larry Johnson, John Fultz, Claude English and Steve Rowell.

When I first started going to URI basketball games my father took me to Narragansett to Monahan's dock to get an ice cream and Ray was there. My father asked me if I remembered him from the PC game.I went over to him and told him he should be playing at URI since he lived in Narraganset. He was very nice and said he wished my Rams well. I was so impressed meeting my first college basketball player. His sister was a customer of ours here in Florida. I also met his brother Charlie here. They were a nice family

Was it the Ray Johnson era of local hoops that helped build the Boon St. court’s reputation?

When Johnson was at SK they won 56 games in a row and won 2 straight state titles against Class A schools when SK was Class C. SK then won a 3rd straight title with Bud Hazard as their center in 6 overtimes in Keaney.
I was there for that one. The place was packed.
Johnsons other claim to fame was a game against UCLA while at PC where he totally dominated Alcindor.

Good basketball history, bone. Much appreciated.
I remember being in Jr. High and watching, in person, Johnston (Danny Mazzulla, Paul Aiello, etc.) play SK in the championship. My memory fades as to the venue but I think the year was ‘78-‘79 ?
There was some excellent HS talent around the state then.

Not a Ram but Ray is probably the greatest SK Rebel. Big loss.

I played against Vic Hazard from SK in high school. Is that Bud's brother?

Him coming back here, and getting paid...would be epic.
I think him scoring 19.6 ppg and only getting serious consideration at Fordham should explain everything.
You can't give this kid any credit, huh Blue? Let me ask you this. If Ways transferred, what programs would pursue him? He'd be lucky to have a low major, never mind a program like Fordham. Give me Bassy over Ways 100% of the time. I don't think any of us believe Bassy is a high-major player. I don't. But I think he'd be a nice option for us this year as we lack a point guard.

Current—> former—> current
I have been mentally preparing myself for this the past 36 hours.
Even 3 years ago with David Cox, we said the kid was a good, fast, pure PG with good court vision and great ball handling. He just lacked the size or offensive capabilities to be a bona fide all-around player at the A10 level. If the kid doesn't need to shoot, he's certainly an upgrade at PG from a tempo perspective alone. Archie wants to play fast. Bassy can definitely play fast, the dude just can't shoot and his defense was/is suspect.
HOWEVER - on this current team, he's literally the 5th offensive option on the floor at any given time. Lawrence, Green, House, Estevez, Fuchs, Kortright - all are capable scorers across all 3 levels.
The hope is that with some growth and development he can improve his defense - because him being on the floor makes us a better and faster team in transition. If he doesn't need to shoot, I honestly don't hate the move - even if the plan is to start him.
For all his shortcomings, he's easily the best ball handler on the roster now, and no way is Archie going to let him shoot 16 times a game. If he's playing within his role as a pass-first/pass-only PG, the offense will improve. Let's just hope the defense comes with it.
As with anything, I'd love for him to come in here and show some serious growth and development and prove all of us wrong who didn't think he belonged on an A10 roster. Also wouldn't hate if Isaiah Miranda came with.

I’m not sure the defense could get any worse. The only thing missing this season was a matador holding a cape as the other team was parading to the basket
