2014-15 Schedule

Any news on the schedule for next year? I don't think Rhody has a lot of continuing OOC series still ongoing and it needs to schedule 12 OOC games for a 30 game slate (Old Spice is exempt). I believe that the A-10 goes to an 18 games schedule with the addition of Davidson next season. There likely will be homes and homes with five league teams and single home games with four teams and single away games with the remaining four teams.

By my understanding we have the following games already committed:

OOC (12):
Detroit
Brown
@ Providence
@ Southern Miss
Old Spice Tourney Game 1
Old Spice Tourney Game 2
Old Spice Tourney Game 3

A-10 (18):
9 Home
9 Away

2014 Old Spice Team Participants:
Georgia Tech
Kansas
Marquette
Michigan State
Rhode Island
Rider
Santa Clara
Tennessee

That leaves 6 games open.

3 home, 3 away I would think.

Let's hope we can get at least 2 or 3 of them with top 100 RPI teams.

I know they are looking at getting at least 1 home and home [starting at home] with that type of team.

No more 250+ RPI's please.

So far, with Detroit and Brown as our only 2 home OOC games known, ugh.

I think it is five OOC games that must be scheduled. You can play up to 27 regular season games and up to four exempt tournament games. The Old Spice Tournament is only three games unlike past tournaments that Rhody has played in. I therefore think that means URI can only schedule 30 games. With the A-10 going to 18 games, that leaves 12 OOC games. URI already has seven leaving five left to add.

Nobody wants to see these games, but the reality of the situation is that there will likely be at least 3 more games scheduled against the Quinnipiac/NC A&T's of the world.

Every team in college basketball plays them at least a few times. I might even prefer a schedule made up of one top 10 team, one more top 25, 2 more top 50, 2 more 50-125, 3 125-200, and 3 more 200+ (12 total), than seeing say, 8-9 games against teams 60-150.

Less OOC games due to the increased league schedule, means that Dan has to step it up when it comes to the quality of those OOC games.

No more UNH's, thanks.

With one less exempt game and two more league games, I think there is less chance that there will be no more UNH's. The team will need to have some games that should be given wins. I bet they try to get 3-4 home games with only one of them being considered a real quality opponent. One of the remaining five OOC games will also likely be an away buy game (similar to LSU last year).

That's fine with me. I don't mind having some patsies on the schedule, I just don't want ALL patsies. As long as we have a few chances for a statement win and to test ourselves against good teams in OOC, I'd rather try to get closer to double-digit wins if possible.

If so, it should not be anything other than an even home and home. URI has won the last three games in the series and BC has been anything but good for several years. They are not worthy of any special deals.

A BC home and home would be good, and an away buy game would be a definite I'm sure.

Even the toughest schedules have at least a few games against 200+ teams, and there's nothing wrong with that. Our OOC SOS last year was 207 (stronger than only Duquesne and Fordham), which can/should definitely be improved on, but I'd shoot for somewhere in the 100ish range, rather than a top 25 schedule that I don't think we're ready for.

I think Dayton's schedule this past year is a good target for us to shoot for. They played in a strong tournament, had other games against Ga. Tech, USC, Ole Miss, and Murray State. Cupcakes on the schedule included IPFW, BOTH St. Francis' (back-to-back, no less!), Delaware St, and Winthrop. This strength of schedule was rated 88th.

A lot of the reason that URI's OOC schedule last season was weak was due to the NIT Tip-off games. All but the Arizona game were brutal. One of the other three games was non-D1 metro State which was probably the best of the lot but was not even factored into the SOS since only D1 games count. The Old Spice Tournament has a far better field and is only three games. That alone should raise the OOC Strength of Schedule.

I wonder for how many more years that web site will be used for this scheduling stuff? Most coaches say that scheduling is a year-round, pain-in-the-ass excercise so why don't they all throw in $100 (x 340 D1 coaches) to have a purpose-built site developed to make it easy?

That said, I love it how this is all public.

Updated guess at OOC Schedule after recent seeking games post by Luke Murray:

OOC (12):

HOME
Detroit
Brown
TBD (start of H&H series)
TBD (start of H&H series)
TBD (buy game)

AWAY/NEUTRAL
@ Providence
@ Southern Miss
@ TBD (start of H&H series)
Old Spice Tourney Game 1
Old Spice Tourney Game 2
Old Spice Tourney Game 3

One unknown game already scheduled. Given we know of no away guarantee game for next season, my guess is that it is a buy game at a Power Conference school. If so, that would be just five home OOC games, four true road games, and three neutral site games. That is typically not exactly a formula for getting a lot of OOC wins.

It especially makes sense for Harvard because scheduling doesn't matter a whole lot for them. Win the conference and you're in the tourney, don't win the conference and you don't dance. RPI and things like that aren't a real concern for them.

Bill Koch just tweeted:

#URI home games only -- Davidson, George Washington, St. Bonaventure, VCU. #Rams road games only – Dayton, Duquesne, George Mason, Richmond.

That means UMass, Fordham, St. Joe's, St. Louis and LaSalle are home and home.

He also tweeted:

Nonconference games for #URI include PC (A), So Miss (A), Brown (H), Detroit (H), UMass-Lowell (H) and three at Orlando Classic (N)

That's 26 games (18 conf and 8 nonconf), so I imagine we have 4 more games to schedule, correct? We need at least a couple of more attractive home games.

While the play of the previous year does not always portend the upcoming season performance due to personnel changes and different schedules, it can be used as a barometer with qualifications.

Based on the performance of A-10 teams last year with six tournament teams (UMass, SJU, GW, VCU, Dayton, & SLU), I thought it would be intersting to see the A-10 schedule based on games versus 2014 NCAA teams. The weaker teams from last year will have more games versus NCAA teams than the actual tourney teams. Some of this is of course attributed to the fact that the A-10 NCAA teams cannot play themselves which could account for 1-2 games.

A-10 League games vs 2014 NCAA Teams
Duquesne 9
Fordham 9
George Mason 9
La Salle 9
Rhode Island 9
St. Bonaventure 9
Davidson 8
Richmond 8
Saint Louis 7
VCU 7
Dayton 6
George Washington 6
Massachusetts 6
Saint Joseph's 6

Also to the G Mason game. My experience at the game at their campus last year needs to be erased from my memory with a full throttling.

Book it! That's good news, I was concerned that it it would be the week directly following the Orlando Classic. Hopefully we'll only have one game (if any) between the Classic finishing up on Nov. 30th and the PC game on Dec. 10th. Don't want to play PC at the end of a long stretch of games, would like to come into that one fully rested.

PC has the tv rights to the game since it is their home game. It will therefore likely be a FS1 game broadcast nationally. The only issue will be finding this station on your cable lineup (provided it is available).
