THIS Year (2014-15)
Going into the 3rd year of the DH era, have to be wondering what we can expect from a ton of different angles.
What is reasonable to expect from:
(1) EC & Hass in their Soph campaign ( Matt Butler?)
(2) Transfers leaving rust in the dust?
(3) Incoming class contributing
(4) DH bringing in some recruits to be excited about in '15 (the improvements in the program help?)
(5) The Jordan Hare saga
(6) Biggest question for me being DH had a whole season to evaluate accurately what this roster can offer and whether he will be able to plot a course that will lead to the NCAA, or top half of the A10, or at least make a run at that stuff. ( development of players, the schedule, game plan tailored to the two)
(7) Get a win at PC? loss of their guys all around? We will have more experience, I hope thats a win.

We can't really say until the April signing period is done. If the roster remains as is we are knocking on the NIT door

Just in general. GB gets in his own way- he needs to relax, control his emotions, and play. I have to think he benefits from the expected depth next season.

pc will have some experience:
henton, harris, desrosiers, fortune, lamomba, dunn... 4 of which were HUGE contributors this year.

Looks great. A plus for grabbing Rokas?
Losing Cotton and Batts? That is a lot lost from a team that escaped by 1. I don't think Dunn's wealth of experience in street clothes at the end of the bench matters.

Re: Next Year
Gustys really liked what he saw when he visited.
Still think we've got a shot.
Concerning PC, they need those top 100's to be the real deal next season, or they will struggle, especially early.
Maybe they hope Dunn becomes the next Cotton, or Napier, or somebody.....

Re: Next Year
I sure trade recruiting classes with them.
Dunn is not in the class of those guys offensively.
He's a distributor and defensive disruptor.
My guess is the 7'1" will be pretty raw, top 100 rating aside,
so Batts will be missed.

Re: Next Year
Agree about the recruiting classes except Garrett. We absolutely need him.
Henton will have to be huge, and Dunn healthy for them to have any success next year.
As for the freshmen, who knows?
Speaking of freshmen, as much as I hate to say it, Duke has a MONSTER class for next season.
If Parker stays, they have to be the favorite to win it all. Barf.

Re: Next Year
Not sure Parker is the answer to their needs.
Joel Embiid from Kansas is a legitimate bigman.
None of these guys is in Lebron or Durant's league,
when they came into the NBA.

Re: Next Year
Embiid is a project, though. Parker is the most NBA-ready. My guy is and has been Julius Randle. Not sure they could justify taking him #1 overall, but if they pick in the 4-7 range and he gets to them it would make me happy. Reminds me of a slightly bouncier (although maybe less skilled) Al Jefferson.

Re: Next Year
TP, I think a better comparison for Randle is Zach Randolph. Parker to me is Paul Pierce 2.0.

Re: Next Year
Parker is the most skilled, by far. Randle might be better suited to the NBA
game, Wiggins was a typical freshman, with wild highs and lows.
Wiggins probably needs another year.
A bunch more players are declaring for the draft, today.

Re: Next Year
BTW, the Celtics are doing a great job, losing 9 in a row. Orlando has caught them, now tied for 3rd worst. The Celtics will now finish anywhere from 3 to 6, so as of today, their pick would be anywhere between 1 and 9.

Re: Next Year
Nice to see some guys differ on comparisons for these kids.
Randle probably handles the ball better than Wiggins strangely enough.
Parker shoots it very well. Does not particularly play defense well. I think he is the most intriguing, because unlike the rest, his room for growth is in his body and activity. Not necessarily in his basketball skills like the others.
Fun to see what all of them become. Not sure if any of them are franchise saviors.
Not a Napier fan but he shoots the ball very quickly and accurately. I see some Steve Nash in his pull up.

Not too long ago, Embiid was thought to be the #1 pick. Now with his back situation, he could slip a little. It's possible if the Celtics end up picking in the 4-5 range, that he could be available. Would you pick him there?

Re: Next Year
I would need to see the medicals, especially since my other big man - Jared Sullinger - also seems to have health issues. So far this year, Sullinger has been pretty healthy and played, but he missed half of his rookie year because of a back injury IIRC. With any young big man, an injury scares me a bit, since you know they're going to be exposed to more contact than most perimeter players.Billyboy78 wrote:Not too long ago, Embiid was thought to be the #1 pick. We've always said that the biggest jump in production comes in sophomore year. But what happens when you transfer and sit our your sophomore year? My new theory is that delays your development, and that JR and Biggie will be much better next year!

Re: Next Year
JR needs to spend all summer in the weight room.
I think Biggie will be serviceable, but will eventually be
backing up Garrett.
Gil? Needs a hypnotist to stop fouling, and be consistent.

Re: Next Year
JR will have to compete with a fifth-year senior or juco and TJ for minutes. If he continues to miss layups and turn the ball over he won't play.
I agree with you on Biggie.
I think Gil will be fine next year.

Re: Next Year
If we don't have to depend on Gil for 30+ minutes I think the foul situation with him becomes a little less urgent. Obviously it would be better if he could play better defense and cut down on fouls, but having better depth in the front court will help, also.

Gil would have played even less without Hassan who really impressed me with his ability to play tough WITHOUT fouling. Euros usually play soft and don't foul much.

Re: Next Year
I was thinking about Guard minutes for next year..
Here is a thought... Always have believed we would move to more of a VCU style of play..
Last year VCU had 5 guards play 30+ games and 16+ min/game with no one averaging over 30 min/game
Melvin Johnson 33g - 22.4 min
Rob Bradenberg 35g - 26.6 min
Briante Weber 35g - 28.9 min
JeQuan Lewis 35g - 16.1 min
Jordan Burgess 31g - 21.6 min
We had 4 guards play 21+ games and 20+ min/game and two averaging 32+ min/game
EC Matthews 32g - 32.5 min
Xavier Munford 32g - 35.6 min
TJ Buchanan 32g - 25.5 min
Biggie Minnis 21g - 20.9 min
I would not be surprised to see us get to a rotation where no one is 30+ minutes per game. Probably won't see TJ getting 25 minutes per game either. X will be replaced with someone (TBD) and Butler probably not getting a significant bump in minutes. My assumption is whoever comes in to replace X probably won't see 30+ min/game... I assume Butler will still see some playing time.. it could look like something like this by the end of the season...
EC Matthews - 29 min
TJ Buchanan - 16 min
Biggie Minnis - 22 min
Jarvis Garrett - 22 min
X replacement - 17 min
Butler - 10 min

Re: Next Year
Assuming the Guard minutes are in the ballpark, they add up to 116 minutes per game. That leaves Biruta, Martin, Reischel, Watson, Hare?, Gustys? for the remaining 84 minutes per game. Will be very interesting to see how the minutes are divided up between the Fs/Cs.

Forgot Iffy... Man that's a potential log jam... You figure Biruta and Martin will get 25+ mins/game each. That leaves Reischel, Watson, Hare?, Gustys?, and Iffy battling for remaining 30-40 minutes

This is a good problem to have. As we've seen, things have a way of working themselves out for better or worse. Foul trouble, suspensions, transfers, injuries, emergency surgery, assaults...who knows whats going to happen.

Agree. I like that there will be competition at just about every spot. Guys will really need to earn minutes next season.

GoRhody has Hassan listed at 6'7 and Iffy at 6'8. In this pic at least it looks like Hassan is taller than Iffy. Could he have grown a little, or is this just another example of missreporting player height and weight?ace wrote:

Re: Next Year
As Adam alluded to- you know when else there was concern about too many players? October of 2013 and then no Jordan, Mike, Mike, Biggie later and Jarelle is playing the 4 when necessary and TJ is the starting pg.
With a full roster, I see 10 guys averaging double digit minutes, with EC leading the team in minutes and getting just over 30. And no, any hypothetical disruption to consistency or familiarity in that situation doesn't bother me. That happens when guys are new to playing with each other or, more importantly, playing out of position.
