To follow up on this, Nelson-Ododa averaged 6 and 5 for Richmond, which gets him a spot on an ACC roster. He joins Maia (from Brown) at Pitt. I think I'll be 6'9" in my next life, or a lefty reliever... endless opportunities.

That could be the worst thing to be. Maybe the most dangerous position in sports - which, hey, if that is your thing then more power to you, but it doesn't really fit in with the other things. My little brother was lefty and an excellent baseball player, but wanted to be the best centerfielder of all time so he stubbornly refused to learn how to pitch. Once the pitchers started throwing in the upper 80s and throwing breaking stuff, he couldn't hit anymore and his career ended basically overnight. If my kid is a lefty he will be forced to pitch - its like at least a free college education.

Anyways, best job in sports is backup QB. Just stand there with a hat on, paid like a real player and you can do it basically forever.

NFL back up qbs are star college qbs though.

Less competitive angle at a scholly is track and field too. Especially throwing. ESPECIALLY FOR WOMEN THROWERS.

Bob Montgomery, the old back-up catcher with the Sox, used to say that he demanded extra money whenever he had to play.

Agree with TP about special teams players. The kickoff team is the worst.

less contact than a long snapper. as a gunner 9 times out of 10 you run down field bumping with a blocker. its not like the old days where you had to run head first into a wedge

long snappers get drilled every time they're out there. they even had to change the rules so that it is illegal to line up directly over them because they were getting taken out.

yeah, backup QB would be better, worst thing you gotta do is go hold on FGs

Rothstein's article didn't endear Austin to anyone and the author surely misfired with his peers…

Reactions all-around were negative-as-negative-could-be.

Yes, people smoking joints, drinking, waving assault weapons.
Owens looks like he's on the Ed Brown diet.
In fairness, most of their posters are very unhappy with Owens.
All but one guy who's accusing the others of using "code word" racism.
They have also referenced Owens' Tweets, which they say are
pretty troubling.
Another athlete who seems to like the "gangsta life" over getting
himself ready for a possible future in the sport he plays.

Makes you wonder what Cooley is doing recruiting these types of kids. Talent is great, but what they do off the court is just as important.

I would rather Dan keeps recruiting good students and good people rather than the other kind.

So far he's done a pretty good job there, eh?

The reality is that you probably aren't going very far if you only recruit the holiest of the holy. Fact of the matter, I'm sure it's very hard for coaching staff's to identify this sort of stuff until kids are getting arrested or posting ignorant things online. Many kids from inner-city, who knows the full depths of what they are involved with. A kid can be acting like an angel on Twitter, and smoking blunts and getting drunk every night on the outside. At the end of the day, any college coach is going to have to take on a level of risk if they want to succeed long-term. Tom Izzo is the only elite coach I'd say has run close to a very clean program, and even they've had some incidents up there.

Well I guess it depends on how you define "elite coach" to say that Izzo is the only one.

Bo Ryan, John Belein, Sean Miller, Coach K., Few, etc.? Are they elite?

Nichols was a top ten recruit.
As one coach said, "Worst coach in D-1".
He can recruit, but he can't coach.

OK, after some investigation, I think we're involved with Nichols. Dan just started following this guy today. He covers the Memphis Tigers and is on the Nichols story. Does this mean we're trying to get Nichols? No. Can I dream? Yes. Or can't Kuran just give Nichols a little talk on how much he loves it here? And shouldn't Iffy be playing D2 somewhere? Anyway...https://twitter.com/JohnMartin929

MEMPHIS WON'T GRANT TRANSFER TO NICHOLS
Junior F Austin Nichols told ESPN 92.9 radio in Memphis he intends to transfer. However, coach Josh Pastner told ESPN's Andy Katz that the school won't release him from his scholarship. "We spoke with Austin in mid-June and everything was fine. We named him captain after the season. We don't know what has changed."

Now, that's a desperate coach…..Maybe he should call Keno for some PR advice.
