Shaka to Marquette? Where there is smoke...

As for my posting, my opinions haven't changed. I just like to pick and choose my battles

Big East did not have a great year. I do not that that is necessarily an indicator of things going forward.

I think Georgetown should be better next year. If Marquette gets Smart, they too should be better. Nova should be good, SJU could be good, PC has potential, as does SHU with good recruiting cycles. X could be decent depending on who stays (IE Christon). Who did I forget? Creighton, Butler, DePaul have work to do.

Recruiting doesn't mean everything, but I like my chance to get results with the players than without them. I've always states my belief in trends, and that includes Fox building a better network and the Big East winning games on the court.

Shaka is the coaching star of the A10, would not help if he goes...

VCU, however, is in better shape to withstand that than Butler was when Stevens left.

The guy turned down numerous BCS offers.
He has a killer recruiting class coming in to VCU,
with FOUR top 100's.
I could be wrong, but I just don't see it

Rhody Guy, Marquette is throwing huge Fox dollars at him, over 3 mil a year. He's got to be thinking about it.

It might depend on how he feels about the future of the BE. Williams didn't like it, but he did have issues with the administration there.

I still say VCU/Marquette is a lateral move in terms of conference quality, but the dollars are hard to ignore.

And Rod, I agree, but you just never know....

Oh, now there's a story about Shaka to UCF.
The silly season has begun.
Marquette doesn't have an AD or President in place.
(sounds like Rutgers last year), so who's making these offers?

66, that's his home state yes. IF that's a big lure for him, then he might take it.

It wasn't for Dan with Rutgers, thankfully.

See where Archie Miller got his contract extended, with a raise. Dayton is really trying to keep him. Funny what a couple of missed buzzer beaters will do. He must be a genius.

Changes a guy's entire career. So much rides on a total crapshoot.

3 months ago, Dayton boosters were trying to run him out of town. And not in a good way.

Again Rod, that might keep Shaka at VCU. You might think he would want to know who he's working with down the road a little, and whether they CAN work together.

UCF? Pul-eeze.

Marquette is also a better situation than Rutgers though. Rutgers are coaches up and spit them out. Marquette has been a perennial good team over the last decade, has a huge basketball budget, the potential to hand out a huge salary, and an even bigger fan base. I would say going home to Marquette if true is significantly easier if going home is a draw, than Rutgers was.

NBE coaches to the ACC botton feeders in a week.

Some fake tweets getting some play saying Shaka has a 6yr deal and will be new Marquette coach. Not sure they are that far along yet.

Smart signed an extension last season that guaranteed him untold millions. My questions are: What is the buyout clause and what is it going to cost Smart PERSONALLY to move???? I do believe that he co-opted and co-owned "responsibility to his players, program, and University" for the faith VCU showed in him.

so now PC fans come on our forum and start threads about our coaches leaving? you know we got under their skin. i see on the PC board some of their own fans calling the guys who post here out (some close to 1,000 posts) and they specifically cite how their aren't URI fans posting on their board. Who is obsessed with who?

Buyout is $700,000 through early April (2013), then it goes down to $600,000. At least that's what I understand from this article:

To be fair, he didn't start the thread - He was responding to other comments in the NCAA tournament thread, and we split that thread out.

The latest thing on ESPN is from 1:30, and just suggests that Wake Forest and Marquette have reached out to Smart, but not how serious any of those talks are: http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketb ... haka-smart - If Smart was to leave, I think it would take something like a six-year guaranteed contract, which is a heck of a lot of money, with little or no protection for the hiring school.

If Shaka, or any other A10 coach goes to Marquette, it's about the money, not the conference.

If Mack leaves for Wake, like Rod said, what will that mean? The rats are leaving the ship?

Although, if I'm a BE coach, I would leave for the ACC in a heartbeat, bottom feeder or not.

I sort of buy this one. Usually, there is zero smoke from all of the past ones. Illinois, UCLA, etc. Maybe he wants to go home. Marquette is a good job that will pay him a ton and has a pretty good 2014 class (if he can keep it together).

Tough to turn down Fox $$$, but basketball wise, I see the Marquette and VCU jobs about equal. Unless his hometown Marquette is his dream job, he can do better.

Actually Shaka's hometown is Madison, Wisconsin. That might be his dream job but it is locked up for the time being. Shaka's wife is a native of Akron which is where they met when he was an assistant coach there.
Will be interesting to see if he moves on this year. The ACC could be a draw and Winston Salem is a nice city to raise a family.

One would have to imagine that if Smart wasn't in discussions with Marquette , he would kill the rumors. Definitely some premature reporting from some less than stellar sources though.

People need to stop rubbing their hands at the thought of,

Sandy Cohen, Marquette's top recruit, released from commitment today.

They might lose their entire class before a new coach is hired. Not good.

that's a blow, St Johns would have a top 3-4 team next year preseason and we know NYC market is impt. They also lose Sanchez and probably Obekpa, and its even likely Harrison declares early as well if he sees a bad season ahead.

I doubt Shaka leaves. He gets paid well at VCU and seems to like it there. I just don't see a move making much sense, especially since the A10 is on the rise as a conference. The BE and ACC seem to be on a slight decline…which is evident in this tournament. The A10 seems to garner more respect with each passing season. It's the one conference that's had a strong devotion to basketball for years. I would be surprised to see him leave VCU. When will some of these piss poor media/twitter guys learn that yelling something or tweeting something twice as loud or twice as much doesn't make it true. Haha.

It's been fun to root against the ACC this tournament, but it's not a conference in decline, in my opinion. Parity is fun, but there are still power conferences.

Shaka needs to come out and deny the rumors. It's nutso out there.

They are saying on the MU board, that there will be a presser tomorrow about a new coach. Could be Howland? Or one of their assistants? Shaka?

If ESPN reports something, then we'll know.

MU is in a tough spot. They are at risk of losing an entire season's recruiting class, yet hiring a new coach without a permanent AD in place, could be risky too.
