Not a loss in the long run. Allows staff to recruit a young PG to compete with Biggie for the next two years

I would have hoped he waited until this season was over...but on the bright side, gives us another scholly for next season.

He saw the writing on the wall, wasn't going to play very much his last year and a half here.

He will be a good player for a low D1 program. Good luck to him.

This is true. I liked Mike and wish he stuck it out, but if basketball is important to him and he could see his opportunities to play were shrinking then you can't really blame him. This happens, unfortunately, in modern college hoops.

What ever will be, will be...
Too bad, I thought he would tough it out and keep progressing. I was one of his biggest fans on the board, but I have to admit he seemed to regress a good fraction this season from last, especially as related to his on court decisions, his court awareness needs to increase. I still think Powell is a gem for some team, he's got a lot of games under his belt for a junior and before this season I saw him as very solid all things considered. Lets not forget he got thrown right into the fire as a freshman with a total of one high school season experience at point guard. Mike's just got to get his mojo back. Good luck to Mike Powell, thanks for the work he did for the team, but if we play his next squad hope we crush em. :)

TJ the only JB guy left?
Hope he is happy to stay, because I see him as one of the most important guys on the team for the next crucial season and a half.

I think TJ accepts his role. Great kid and hard worker, just like Mike was, but his talents fit the team's needs better.

before the season started my 4 locks to start were:
1 Hare C
2 Biruta F
3 Munford G
4 Mathews G
then for the 5th spot I thought between Minnis, Martin and TJ
We all know the story on Hare and widely differing opinions as to his potential to contribute.
Many said Powell would start, in fact the majority for sure. I never saw it. I like Powell's hustle, etc. but I always thought Mathews was a Lock to start and that Minnis was for sure over Powell. I had numerous discussions and told Mathews was not ready for PG duties this year. Again, I just never had near the opinion of the majority here about Powell.

This is part of the college basketball business. Competition for starting roles and playing time are part of Dan Hurley's process.
Powell could have handled it better and avoided the suspension but I would have been frustrated too when I got only 1 minute of PT in a game recently.
I actually expected at least one player to depart after 1st semester - that allows the kid to play next December after sitting out a year. You see more and more kids transferring at mid year now.

The bad of this is less competition in practice, but then again, Italy is behind us, September and October practices are behind us so the practices that showed the Coaches who had what ability for the most part over. The Coaches, Players and Fans know a lot more know about these guys.
The good is there will be less potential for desention on the Bench because there will be fewer guys in chairs. Reality is that MP was not going to get many minutes at all the rest of the year - so it does not really translate into more minutes for Mathews and Martin BUT it does make the Bench situation easier to manage.
Aaman not being around does not add too many minutes either since he has not gotten many for reasons we know - but the minutes he was getting will now likely go to Martin and to some extent Jarelle.
Best of luck to Mike Powell as I wish good luck to all players who leave our school.
This also opens up for sure another Roster spot which helps the recruiting angle short term and longer term.

Good luck to Mike Powell.
This opens up another scholarship, which hopefully results
in a good PG or SG this recruiting cycle.
Powell's main problem was, for his size, he isn't particularly quick, nor
is he very fast.
Bobby told me last spring, that Powell was resisting taking a little floater
in the lane. We all know his drives into the trees provided little
results.
If the best collegiate PG of his time couldn't influence a PG in the program,
it makes you wonder.
I think losing Aaman for who knows how long, really hurts the team,
more than the loss of Powell.
CFL will be needing a PG next year. Maybe that's a good place for Mike?

The way MP acted when he lost his starting job makes me glad he's gone. You don't need his attitude in the program. DH's suspension of him was a my way or the highway ultimatum. MP chose the highway.

I wouldn't say its imploding, this is the nature of things and the reason you want a deep team, well coached and ready to go. Who knows maybe Butler gets pressed into action a bit more as a result and he prospers.

The team is not imploding. Powell was a holdover. Dan saw a good kid who worked hard but was never going to b the PG on a winning team. Now the staff need to go out and get a PG who will lead this team in the future.

Wouldn't mind seeing butler get some minutes against UNH or Brown if we can get a cushion. MP is a good player and will fit in with a different team. I don't know that he was top of the A10 good though which is where we want to be.

I think, Butler should get some time, if we have a lead, just to see
if he can contribute.
It's also time for Reischel to step up and be the player staff and fans
thought he could be.

Wonder how this affects the ongoing APR situation?
That Powell didn't play the last two games makes you think
it may have been a mutual parting of the ways.
You figure he had four guards ahead of him for playing time,
and that wasn't going to change.

I was wondering the same thing. I remember you quoting Dan, can't remember the exact quote, but it was that " No one is leaving" because of the APR situation. Now with Powell and possibly Hare, could this put us in trouble?

Dan could've named Biggie the starter from the get go. But to be fair to Mike he waited until it was clear cut that Biggie was much better. Mike reacted badly and that's when he lost Dan. See ya.

i was an MP supporter but he never developed, one of his best games was the 2nd of his career, against Univ of Texas. started regressing this year when pressed with real competition for first time at URI. it was clear Biggie is the better option over the next 2-3 years. this is addition by subtraction. best luck to MP on the next chapter of his basketball life.

Powell has been taken off roster on gorhody.com, Hare hasn't. Not sure what that means
If Hare leaves, as expected, URI will have four scholarships to give, so they need 3 more players to sign. That's not what was expected. Staff better get going.

Yes, because we've got to be lagging, just targeting SGs for the most part.
We need a big, and SG and a PG, now.
There are holes needing to be filled in for next year that were unanticipated.
I wonder, too, about the Aaman situation, and how that will play out.
I'm sure Hurley and URI can't be happy about what happened.
This happened last Saturday, which means this story has been sat on for almost a week.
Also, why did S.Kingstown Police not give a copy of the incident report to
the Projo? Something stinks in all of this.

Makes me sick that these kids today transfer or whatever at the first sign of adversity.

What does he think his ceiling is? NBA? obviously not. the handful of 6ft or shorter guys in the NBA dominated the collegiate ranks.

Nate Robinson? it wasn't even close that he was just head and shoulders above. Few other guys. Just Norris Cole averaged like 30 a game at cleveland state. MP doesn't have a go-to talent, which severely limits his ceiling.

Leads me to the European route..... Unless you comeback and coach or remain in basketball, your battling uphill to compete against people that have been focused on non-basketball employment.

As someone else pointed out, it happened in Narragansett, and that department does give copies of all incident reports to URI each week. Hurley and the people there have probably known about it for days, but they probably weren't going to comment on it until they had to. It probably wasn't picked up in the media until a week later because 1) there's only one or two papers picking up Narragansett Police reports to begin with 2) URI hasn't had a game in the past 10 days or so and 3) Aaman presumably hasn't been practicing anyway because of his injuries.

Props to Mike Powell for those moments of notable achievement in his seasons with the Rams - we can all remember his clutch four free throws in the overtime session that gave us the win at Saint Louis last year.

I assume that Mike made this transfer decision after discussion with Coach Hurley and his family. I don't think Mike is destined for a basketball career after college, so I expect him to transfer to a school closer to his home in Chicago and combine his basketball skills with a strong focus on getting a degree. I don't know the roster needs of schools in that area, but its seems that schools like Southern Illinois, UIC, and Northern Illinois may have openings. And if D2 is of interest to him, both Winona State and Southern Indiana have top notch programs. Good luck to Mike in his future plans.
