Earl Watson will not play basketball at Wichita State this season, according to coach Gregg Marshall.

Watson “did not get done all he needed to in order to be admitted at this time,” Marshall said in a text message.

Watson (6-foot-7, 240 pounds) needed to complete a math class over the summer at Chipola (Fla.) College. Watson did not participate in summer practices with the Shockers and, in late July, Marshall said he was not optimistic.

“It’s going be hard,” Marshall said. “There’s an academic class he’s got to finish up to have the number of hours to be admissible to school.”

Neither Watson nor Chipola coach Patrick Blake returned phone messages.

Watson, a junior-to-be from Fort Pierce, Fla., averaged 9.5 points and 6.4 rebounds for Chipola. He committed to WSU in September 2011 and signed in November. He attended Queen City Prep Academy in Charlotte, N.C., for one year after attending Fort Pierce Central High. As a freshman at Chipola, he averaged 6.5 points and 5.3 rebounds while making 57 percent of his shots.

I asked him what his name was. Answer was Earl Watson. Also said Southern Miss and another school (couldn't hear) were recruiting him.

OK, but Rhody Blue was the one who posted the original.
He'd be enrolled in January, and play next year, with two years of
eligibility.
Picture an Onyekaba clone, at PF. I've seen him on film.
He jumps like he's on a pogo stick, able to jump more than once for the same rebound.
Looks like strictly and inside player.
Good insurance, if Hare has any future problems.

Questionable academics, 6 points a game and only two years of eligibility

Ignore his stats. Lots of D1 front court players (and backcourt) at Chipola. Elite athlete, plays big, all inside. Won't be first or last academic gamble, and that washes out somewhat with a 2 year guy. Think he would fill out roster nicely.

It's 9.5 PPG which projected on a 40 minute game comes to 20.4PPG,
which is better than anyone on URI since Will Daniels.
I'm sure staff has considered the APR and knows what they're doing.

Projecting stats out to 40 minutes is a crock.

Did Will Daniels play 40 minutes a game? Then what is the point to compare his stats?
Not everyone is brought in to score. If Hurley thinks he can help, and can see him playing a certain role on the team, then it would be a good signing. Chipola is always loaded, one of the top jucos in the country.

I was pointing out that this kid projects to 20.4 PPG over 40 minutes.
That's pretty damned good.
I mention Will, as the last person to come close to that number at URI.
This guy is a bull and with the new emphasis on our inside play, he'd be a good addition.
As for his academics. I trust staff knows the score better than we do.

Xavier Munford is close to 20 points per 40 minutes, but I'm assuming you mean a frontcourt player, in which case you're probably correct. The danger though with projecting PF and C to play that many minutes is that few of them do, either for conditioning or foul reasons. Regardless though, he sounds like a big body that would be worth taking a chance on, if the academics and behavior questions turn out to be minor. Because minutes for big men can be limited, it never hurts to have a surplus, whereas it's usually easier to stretch a guard's minutes.

SG that is the traditional wisdom - if players don't get accustomed to the hand checking rules a stable of guards will be needed to get through 40 minutes.

These numbers are also at a JC level which does not mean they will project the same to a High Level A10 Team.

BFC,
seems like maybe it has to do with the "surprise" factor? Nobody seemed to know we wre involved at all until this thread started about Earl having been at our game. I don't really know. Does not fit with the 9 page thread on Terrell's recruiting obviously.
But Iffy was a surprise too, all of a sudden last year we had him on our campus and enrolled - I would go with Hurley and Murphy all the way especially having seen what Iffy can do.
Looks like they are saying we need a banger inside who can rebound and this kid fits the bill.

Juco Junction's Bret Swanson on Watson from Juco Junctions's message board:

"Yes I have seen him play about 6-7 times. I had the story just couldnt get off the phone to post. That is why I am not a big twitter fan. Watson is very athletic power forward with great hands - nice drop step in the post and dunks on u. Earl wont play outside the paint and usually plays about 3 feet in and is very effective."

Big on the blocks —

Queen City Prep Academy boys basketball coach Tony Taylor swears Earl Watson once blocked 42 shots in a game.

"You can look it up online," he said.

If you find it, let me know.

However, there's no doubting that Watson (6-foot-7, 240 pounds) is an athletic specimen. Watson orally committed to WSU — for a second time — last week. He is a freshman at Chipola (Fla.) College and plans to join the Shockers for the 2013-14 season after spending two seasons in the junior college.

Taylor said Watson averaged 26 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks as a senior. Chipola coach Jake Headrick can vouch for Watson's leaping and quickness as a post player. He compared his style to former NBA star Charles Barkley.

"He plays extremely hard," Headrick said. "Very, very, very explosive. He is a monster athlete who finishes everything above the rim."
Headrick said Watson can use the two seasons at Chipola to develop. His post moves need polishing. He got a late start on the sport, playing seriously for the past four years.

WSU coaches are sure Watson will be worth the wait. One look at a highlight video on SouthernHoopsReport.com from August reveals his skills. He blocks shots. He dunks. He dunks some more.

“I like to dunk on people,” Watson said. “That’s probably my favorite part.”

Watson averaged 8.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in No. 4 Chipola’s first two games, both big wins. Coach Patrick Blake said Watson is working to expand his offensive skills. He is trying to develop a reliable 15-foot jump shot and a jump hook. He rebounds aggressively on the offensive end, Blake said.

“Earl is a 6-foot-7 freak athlete,” Blake said. “He does a great job of dominating the low block. When his defense and rebounding matches his offensive rebounding, he will take his game to the next level.”

Watson is from Fort Pierce, Fla. He attended Queen City Prep Academy in Charlotte, N.C., for one year after attending Fort Pierce Central High. As a freshman at Chipola, he averaged 6.5 points and 5.3 rebounds while making 57 percent of his shots. Those numbers can go up if Watson improves his endurance.

“I’m trying to get in better shape so I can run up and down the floor and play more minutes,” he said.

Blake said Watson is a good student who is on track to graduate from junior college and earn eligibility at WSU.

“They’ve built a great relationship with Earl,” Blake said. “It’s been Wichita State from Day 1, never a doubt.”

Watson is one of four players expected to sign with WSU later this week, joining Edmond (Okla.) Memorial center Shaq Morris, South View (N.C.) guard Rian Holland and Oldsmar (Fla.) Christian guard D.J. Bowles."

Blocked shots? Supposedly this guy blocked 42 shots in a high school game.

Enough with the JUCOs and transfers. Can we just build a program from the ground up, please? Maybe one or two transfers when the time is right or you can't pass up the talent or to try to even out classes. But, how about 3-4 good freshman you can build on every year? How pumped would we be if there was another EC, Martin, O class coming in. If it took a year or two of growing pains, so be it. I'll be here in 2015-16, too.

If all Dan can get for next season are transfers or a juco or two, that's not good.

If this season does turn out to be a disappointment, that's most likely going to impact the recruiting for next year too.

Like was said, we need about 3 new impact players every season to come on board. That's 4 year guys, not two. If not, the outlook for the next year or two, worsens considerably.

I can't speak specifically about this kid. All these guys are lottery tickets to some extent with a pretty big range of outcomes once you get past the 25 or so best recruits. But, this profile isn't exactly what you would want to see. Juco, a whiff of academic issues that wouldn't allow him into Wichita State (not exactly Yale), mediocre numbers, 2* player. There are two things I like. The athleticism and, more importantly, Gregg Marshall liked him. Love the way that Wichita State plays. This squad could use a little of that.

I have seen film on him, but not on You Tube.
He's a quick leaper, who can jump multiple times for a rebound. Strictly inside player.
Preston calls him a "monster". Can never have too much muscle up front.
I watched UMass's frontline demolish BC, Sunday. Very long team.
Wish they could find a way to get this kid eligible fo the 2nd semester,
but they'd be cheating him out of a half year.
Rambone, next year is a crucial recruiting cycle for URI.

Big time, Rod, big time. To continue the progress of this program toward where they want to go, they need a few more impact 4 year players signed on the dotted line for 2015-16.

Hopefully there will be enough improvement by the end of this season, that will help attract those prospects.

I think we can see by now, to get to the NCAA tournament will take a little longer than we hoped.

FWIW, I saw him work out a bit last week before the Maine game.

Obviously a quick look is not indicative of actual game ability but as described earlier in thread, he's got a great build, big hands, big leap. Should be a great addition to our frontcourt.
