About to enter his junior year at the Barrington private school, Brown, the 6-foot-10 grandson of East Providence hoops legend and former University of Rhode Island standout Victor Soares, is quickly becoming the force many projected he would be when he was still a young child.
“Xavier (Mack) has offered him to add to Iowa State (Hoiberg) and Arizona State (Sendek), URI (Hurley),” said Hart. “The Friars, I believe, will offer him soon.

Did not know he was Vic's grandson. I'll have to go watch him this year.

From one of my older brothers. Some on the board might remember this:
1969 State Basketball Championship was held at Alumni Hall. Central v EP. Central had Rick Santos and Marvin Barmes. who both played at PC. EP had Victor Soares (6'9") and Nelson Lopes, who played at URI. And the game was broadcast on Ch 10 by Chris Clark. And Jimmy Adams was the Central coach. Central won and Santos won MVP, even though Barnes scored 24. Barnes was a junior, and the others were seniors and all four were all state.

Soares is listed on URI records as 1974-1977, If he was a senior in 1969, what was he doing
for the five years after high school and before URI?
Lopes is listed as 1973-75, so he'd have a four year gap.

I think Iggy is mistaken. I saw Vic play at EP in 1974. He was at URI a few years and split time with Randy Wilds. He ended up at Acadia.

Vic graduated from EP the same year I graduated from high school, 1974.

It would be nice to make inroads at St. Andrews. Has one of their players ever gone to URI or PC? Notre Dame got Bonzie Jr.

Bonzie Colson has been the only high major prospect that has come out of St. Andrews since Hurley has been coach. One guy is not enough to draw any conclusions on. As far as before that, Jim Baron was our coach and I think we all can understand why their players (Robertson -UConn, Nichols - Syracuse, Sanders - BC, Carter-Williams - Syracuse) saw a better future elsewhere.

The Soares on the 1969 team was Al Soares who is (I believe) Vic's brother. Vic did graduate EP in 1974 (played against him as HS freshman). Spent 3 yrs at Rhody. had some academic problems & ended up at Acadia. The grandson's play sounds very similar to Vic.

I recall Vic telling people at URI that he would leave early to go pro. He did leave early.

Even now I can hear poor Jack Kraft bellowing, "V-I-C-T-O-R!!!!" anytime VS didn't complete a play -- mentally -- driving him to despair…..

I was with Vic the day they reinstated the dunk. Never saw him so happy. Unfortunately it never happened much in the games. He could dunk 2 basketballs at the same time which back then was pretty impressive. Percy could do it too so that was more impressive since he was only 6' 3". We didn't have dunk contests back then tho.

I just loved watching Percy jump. He could really "sky". That's what we called it in those days.

That's what I get for relying on the memory of an older brother!

#8 in the NERS rankings say a lot, I've personally never seen him play but If he is truly 6-10, don't think anybody would turn that down.

He is very tall with long arms. But the game I saw him, he was content to play around the 3 point line, and he's not a very good shooter. He seemed disinterested to mix it up inside, and he was the tallest kid on the court. If you're looking at that NERR list, look at # 5 on that same list. He's a beast around the basket. That's the kind of player I want.

BTW, #2 on that NERR list, Mustapha Heron, just recently decommitted from Pitt.

Heron's expected to go to St. John's because of Slice.

I don't know much about Brown as a player, maybe he's not the guy, but 4/5 star, complete big men just do not regularly sign with A10 teams. Of course, it would be great if Rhode Island could start to change that trend and bring in the guys that make you immediately competitive with the best programs and teams in the country, but it's a process. The A10 is a guard focused conference. Take a guy like Abu- he loved Dan and found aspects of the program appealing but to develop and play against the big men that are in the ACC is just a completely different experience. It doesn't mean you give up on offering those guys, just that it makes it all that more difficult to get them.

Ace said "process"! Mods, please ban her.
Seriously, guys who avoid contact are to be avoided.
You can teach many things, but tough isn't one of them.

Staying in hs is similar to redshirting but instead of waiting a year and joining your team on the floor, you get to choose a team. Often that team is better than what you could have joined. Its a weird thing.

Im not a fan of reclassifying. Its just another piece of gray area to a strange industry.

Billyboy,
I am not a big fan either, and quite honestly I was very surprised he played so well in Indy. Never know, it's impressive that he is performing like this for BABC and still a lot of EYBL Games to go.
At least will be interesting to follow his progression,

St. Andrew's senior big man Terrell Brown will graduate this spring before heading to Tilton School for a post-graduate year. Currently a young senior, Brown is in the midst of a breakout spring with the BABC coming off a huge second session of EYBL in Indianapolis. Brown is currently averaging 12.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game according to D1 Circuit and is the 4th leading shot-blocker in the EYBL at 2.8/game. BABC has a record of 4-3 heading into this weekend's third session in Virginia.
