Men's soccer v St. Joe Sunday

The boys lost 3-2 in OT.
They were down a goal late and down a man, but had control of possession for most of the match.
Beat the keeper several times but couldn't get it past the woodwork.
Brilliant strike to tie it with about 15 minutes remaining by Ross Morison when he picked up a loose ball that deflected out to the top of the box and put it in the top left corner.
St. Joe's goals in second half and OT were very much against the run of play on quick counters, and were delicate flicks.
Rams are now 1-1-1 with 4 points and head on the road for their next 2 A-10 matches next weekend.

Don't forget about Geoff Cameron and the US World Cup team, as they look to get through to next year's final round of CONCACAF qualification. They are tied with Guatemala for first place, 3 points clear of Jamaica. The Yanks host Guatemala Tuesday in KC at 7pm ET on ESPN2. This is the 6th and final match of the semifinal round group, so a draw will get them through. Geoff has played every minute of the Americans' last 3 qualifiers, and has been doing well with Stoke in England since joining them in August. Yanks picked up a huge result Friday in Antigua in a match played in bad weather on an awful pitch. Antigua were sitting on a 1-1 draw, but a goal in extra time gave the full 3 points to the US.

URI Men's soccer is now 2-7-3. It has only beat UNH and UMass. Rhody tied Bryant, Northern Ill, and Temple. The Rams lost to Vermont, Brown, Northwestern, Holy Cross, Boston College, Fairfield, and St. Joe's. Six A-10 games remain to be played. URI would have to run the table and win all to have an above .500 season.

Disappointing as Rhody Men's Soccer was once a highlight of the URI Athletics program.

I think the soccer program's gradual decline is just another sign that the success of most of URI's athletic programs are predicated on having great coaches. The programs themselves are not set up to succeed on their own merit (facilities, funding, scholarship levels, etc...). Soccer succeeded because Bradley was a great coach. The same goes for golf and Drennan as that program looks to be slipping as well. The URI administration seems content enough with the success of great coaches that it doesn't make the investments necessary for continued and longterm success regardless of coach. The URI administration appears to want to have athletic programs but doesn't want to take the necessary actions for them to be continually successful.

Don't forget how Jim Foster is doing a terrific job.
Does anyone know the baseball expenses, they do a lot of travel and are away a good portion of February and March? Maybe the players are paying their own way?

I didn't mention baseball becuase that it one of the few sports that is doing well. Much of that success can probably be attributed to Coach Foster but the program has also received considerable investment (mostly from donors).

If you go down the list of varsity sports sponsored by URI in the last two seasons, there aren't many that did well. Men's and women's basketball were horrible last season and probably have tough seasons ahead. Football hasn't been successful in eons. Men's soccer is now regualrly putting together poor years. It seems only basbeall and the track teams do well.

We lost men's swimming, gymnastics, womens field hockey. It does not look like those savings helped any other sport.
I would think the Athletic budget is the smallest it as been in 20 years, and adjusted for inflation , maybe 40+ years.

USA! USA! Geoff was almost in on the first goal, if Bocanegra hadn't been one step in front of him on the corner kick deflection.

Twellman, in their last home match, said, "you're looking at the future center back for the US National Team for years to come."

I can't wait for Brazil 2014!

Cameron has become sort of a folk hero to Americans following the Premier League.

To the point where he's the subject of an internet meme (on his first throw in, the comentator said he was doing it "quarterback style") and was on the Grantland Network's soccer podcast a few weeks ago.
