Garrett a spring option at the point

Schools on the hunt for a point guard in the class of 2014 don't have very many good options. Three-star floor general Jarvis Garrett is certainly one of the good ones. A native of Milwaukee who now attends Fitchburg (Mass.) Notre Dame, Garrett was easily one of the best point guards on display Saturday.

A solidly built 5-foot-11 floor general, Garrett is very strong with the ball and was making good decisions. He defends with toughness and what really opens things up is the fact that he is a very dangerous pull-up jump shooter. His shooting keeps defenders on their heels and almost at his mercy when he is hitting them.

Garrett finished with 25 points and four assists while controlling the tempo. He's yet to take any visits and currently has offers from UTEP, Rhode Island, Creighton and Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

"I'm just looking for a place that feels like home," Garrett told Rivals.com. "Somewhere that I can hopefully play right away and somewhere that plays fast and that plays tough defense."

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Coming out of the early signing period, there are only four players still on the board from the top 100. Nowhere is that more evident than at the point guard position, where the top 35 players are all already committed or signed.

Enter Jarvis Garrett.

Garrett, a 5-foot-11 Milwaukee native, has been arguably the best player at the National Prep Showcase this weekend – and his stock is certain to rise. His reputation would rise either way, but the dearth of players at his position makes him even more of a sought-after prospect.

“I think I had a great weekend,” Garrett said. “I was using it to get more offers and everything, but I wanted to get more wins, just going to the national tournament.”

Garrett is a talented offensive guard who can score at the rim or knock down shots from the perimeter. He stays under control and has good vision in a half-court set or in transition. He's capable of beating his man off the dribble, but doesn't force it too much if it's not there.

The Notre Dame Prep (Mass.) prospect averaged 26.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists in two games at the Prep Showcase. He also knocked down five 3-pointers in two games.

It's not a stretch to say Garrett is the best point guard left in 2014.

“My strength is getting everybody involved,” he said. “Lately I've been working on my pull-up jumpers and just my effort and everything, and my defense.”

He holds offers from Creighton, Rhode Island, UTEP, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, with interest coming from Marquette. Garrett hasn't taken any visits yet.

“All I'm looking for is a place that feels like home,” Garrett said. “Somewhere that I can go and play right away, that plays fast and a place that plays defense.”

Sounds like a Jiggy Williamson type PG.
Guess we could really use one of those.

Didn't realize that most of the top PG's are already signed for next year.

Rod, it seems like the staff is pointing more toward 2015-16, when it comes to PG's.

SG's, however, are a real need. For next year, not the year after.

Powell is a Sr. next year, so they need to bring in a PG or
at least a combo guard to replace him.
I guess SG is the most pressing need, but I'm
starting to think we need front court players who,
as Jack Kraft used to say, are:
"Mobile, agile, and hostile".

Rod, you nailed it there. We need help in a LOT of areas.

This is going to take a while.

Something tells me Dan and staff know it too.

Jarvis Garrett, 2014 PG, Notre Dame Prep- While Mostella may be the scorer, it is Garrett that leads this team. He is a heady pass-first guard with great court vision and a good feel for the game. He has the ability to create shots off the bounce for both himself and others.

Something tells me future Rhody recruits are going to come here with a reputation for playing GOOD defense.

I know Dan looks for that anyway. Smart, high BB IQ types. The more the merrier.

Garrett, a 5-10 point guard who will soon be ranked in the three-star range, was one of the uncommitted eye catchers of the event. An efficient playmaker and facilitator, Garrett put up big numbers in both his games. He listed offers from Rhode Island, UTEP, Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Creighton.

Jarvis Garrett, 5’11, PG, Notre Dame Prep (MA), 2014- Garrett really took himself to another level at the NPS, pacing Notre Dame Prep to a 2-0 record. He made some really nice reads from the pick and roll, made the extra pass, and finished creatively at the cup. Additionally, the Milwaukee native made some clutch buckets in both games to cap off an outstanding weekend of hoops for this unsigned senior.

Jarvis Garrett, 5-11, PG, Notre Dame Prep (MA), 2014

There may not have been a guy in New Haven who did more to raise his stock in the eyes of college coaches than Jarvis Garrett. The Mil-town native shined, averaging 26 points, 6 boards, and 3.5 dimes over his two games at NPS. Garrett made nice reads off the pick and roll, showed off a nice pull-up, and created his own shot very well. Owning a plethora of mid-major offers, expect BCS schools to come calling after the NPS.

Wouldn't mind seeing him sign for the spring.

Kid has handle like Mike P, we need more of that.

Tough to project how guys will finish when everyone gets taller and faster. He finishes well in the video but obviously the comp is not comparable.

Mostly encouraged by his fluidity and confidence in his shot. Pulled up in the fast break at the free throw lane and even seemed content to take a 14 foot mid range. I like his game. We need a guy that can take what the D gives him. I don't like guys that just do one thing.

For example Nik, he either launched a 3 or tried to put his head down for a lay up, wouldn't hurt to have a guy that realizes he has something good and should just take it. Rare in kids today that they take what the D gives them.

We need more of that? Mike P drives into the lane and then stalls like a car that just went into a big puddle.

The only knock on this recruit is that his videos didn't show a single outside shot attempt.

No outside shot makes him a 4 inch shorter Biggie.
I'd like to have seen more of his shot.
Also, one Powell is just fine.

Now I'm not sure if the recruit I saw was this kid or Jefferson. His face looks like the kid I saw, but he did not look anywhere near 6 feet tall.

Maybe that's by design, Rod.

Something tells me that's what's going on.

Or we sure hope so.

I mean, we need another big, another wing who can shoot, and both guard positions, with the SG being a good shooter.

That's a lot. That's going to take 2 years for all of that, obviously. But the SG is the priority for sure.

Maybe, but they technically, at this point, only have one scholarship available for 13-14. It seems likely that will go to two, but it's just the one right now.

I was saying someone who can dribble like Powell. Powell has the best handle on the team. Im not even a fan of MP. Thats all.

Kid also has a few mid range shots on his highlight film. Including him pulling up at the free throw line with confidence. Is what it is.

Explain again how dominant every transfer or non eligible guy was last year??? Still waiting to see that one.

Just saying the kid can bounce the ball. Doesn't mean he will dribble into a turnover or awful shot like mp.

hotel for basketball players.
Their own chef, saunas, individual rooms, all kinds of perks that
nobody can really compete with.

Rod, you forgot the part where having separate "hotels" for players is illegal. So KY throws like 3 random students in there to say it's a dorm for the general population. Down there, kids must feel like rock stars:

"Hey guys, let's go eat with my private chef today."

I'm sure the football players are just loving it, especially after
UK got knocked out of the NIT by Robert Morris last year.

You know Rod, I love college BB, but the sheer hypocrisy of the NCAA toward the haves and have nots is appalling.

And we wonder why URI can't get a Terrell to come here, after comparing what OK State can offer versus what we have.

Who can blame the kids for wanting to go where EVERYTHING they want is taken care of, no questions asked?

A school like URI is at such a huge disadvantage nowadays. And the big boys want it all for themselves.

And the NCAA looks the other way.

All true, but PC has brought in a slew of top 100
recruits since Cooley landed there.
Nothing super special about their set up, but they're getting
players.
VCU didn't have top 100 recruits until this last cycle. Nothing special about
VCU's digs, either.
Wichita State, Gonzaga, Butler, all have done well without the glitzy
set up.
It can be done. It takes hard work and some luck.

Well, Dan's 2 top recruits so far, are EC and Hassan, and they were early commits.

Since then, nothing special. Butler? Doesn't play. Watson? Don't know yet.

The jury is still out on all of this staff's "connections".

Those were hyped, just like the transfers. The transfers have turned out to be nothing special, let's hope the same isn't true of the recruiting going forward.

Where is Bob Sr.'s influence?

Most transfers take a half season to get up and running. I think Biggie is as advertised. I think we expected Gil to be better on D, he may be better if he had another guy next to him to help on D that knew what he is doing.

Weren't we told that Murray had all these contacts?
We know Preston does. Don't know about Carr.
Bob Sr.? He's not going to send people to URI, when
he's got guys like Kyle Anderson as a top 5 recruit going to UCLA.

I have thought about Gil as more of a compliment in a front court also. At Rutgers I remember them having a huge center that had serious muscles. Too bad we didn't get him too. Gil would be a fan favorite if he could make plays when nobody expects it. Instead he has been doing what he has been doing....

Re: '14 WI PG - Jarvis Garrett (Offer)

Gil is a good offensive player. What is surprising though, is his lack of fundamentals on defense. He's not a freshman anymore. Hurley doesn't seem to be able to get through to him, which is even more surprising.

Rod, about Bob Sr. Why can't he funnel players to us?

I don't mean top 5's. We're never going to get those. There's plenty of talent on his teams that we could use.
