Rutgers Coaching Search - Eddie Jordan hired (updated 4/18)

Unread post by rodfromcranston »

Bob Hurley Sr. would coach Rutgers for 2 years:

Terrence Payne‏@terrence_payne59s
Um what? RT @NJHoopsHaven: AP: Bob Hurley would consider taking Rutgers job "on a caretaker basis for a year or two" http://www.myfoxny.com/story/21966954/b ... at-rutgers

Would he be just keeping the job warm in order for one of his sons to succeed him?

More likely Bobby, who could become a target, if
he succeeds at Buffalo.
Most likely Rutgers grabs Eddie jordan before the week is out.

I was just about to post, that Dan looks safe here for at least 2 more years.

He's going to want to take URI deep into the NCAA tourney, before even considering another job.

Then it could become a bidding war for his services. He might stay if URI can approach what VCU did with Smart, or maybe not.

I tend to agree with Rod here, Bobby might be a more likely target, although he has more ties to NC than NJ.

The other thing that I was going to say, is that it's Jordan's job if he wants it. Unless this news makes them take a step back. Let's hope Rutgers offers it to him.

Bobby just hired an old St. Anthony's guy with deep NJ contacts,
to his staff in Buffalo.
That puts him squarely in play for NJ recruiting.
Jordan wants the job, according to eveyone and has considerable backing by RU alums and
boosters.

Hurley Sr. should leave well enough alone. If Jordan takes the job, Dan shouldn't be a target for Rutgers for several years to come, at least.

If the job comes open again in 2 years, well here we go again. And Rutgers would be in much better shape by then.

Hire Jordan! Rod, I agree. If Dan was #1 on their list, then Jordan was #1A.

Hurley Sr. would get their recruiting back on track, but he would be just another interim coach. Maybe he just wants another challenge, and then retire.

Rutgers would be one hell of a challenge, that's for sure.

"The first offer from the point man in the search was extended to Danny Hurley, who turned the job down because of inadequate compensation. Jordan’s contractual needs are unclear, but if the university is willing to go as high as $900,000, that would more than double his salary with the Lakers.

And though NBA will always be at the top of his resume, Jordan knows that the Lakers' overcrowded coaching staff is in flux, and that the holdovers from Mike Brown’s original staff are not likely to be retained by D’Antoni following the season." NJ.com

But here is some back up names

Interesting comments in a post from Matt Hladik, the Editor and Lead Writer for NJVarsity.com on the Rutgers Rivals Scarlet Nation Messageboard about a conversation with Bob Hurley Sr on his interest in the Scarlet Knights job:

I asked him if he would be using it as a placeholder so Danny could take it in a couple years, and he said no because if he did do it, he wouldn't be doing it long enough to bridge the gap for when Danny would possibly look to get the job.

Good find. Yeah, I think Dan is resolved to now taking Rhody for a NCAA run to make a national splash with his system and program management. That will open many doors which will put Dan clearly in the driver's seat to get into the type of program he wants with minimal disruption to his winning ways. It sounds like Dan would avoid a full rebuilding job at all costs at this point.

5 years, little over $1,000,000 per, ESPN says.

Sounds very similar to what Hurley turned down.

Also worth noting is that Lawrence Frank just got fired. I wonder if he regrets pulling out of the Rutgers job search early on? I have to think he knew his time in Detroit might be limited, so maybe he just really didn't want to go to Rutgers.

Lawrence Frank might just not want to be a college coach. He has enough of an NBA resume to either get another head coaching job, or he would be in high demand as an assistant.

Eddie Jordan was a bust as an NBA coach. He was a great player at Rutgers. I see no evidence that he will be a great coach there.
And I think if Hurley does as well as we hope at URI, schools better than Rutgers and Seton Hall will come looking for him.

I don't see why we can't. Apart from Steve Greenwell pushing for details about Baron's contract and 1yr extension a year ago, I don't know if any of the Projo guys have pushed for the University to disclose the full details of the contracts.

I know there are media members who read this board and also actively participate. Can one of you please request (demand?) via freedom of information the full details of Dan's contract?? Thanks.

It would be interesting to know how the last two years of his contract are different from the original contract. Correct me if I am wrong but the papers say he did not get a raise for his original contract term. Ajerseyguy mentioned he will be making around 750,000 for the additional years. RU only offered him around 875,000 per year.

I think his original terms were for about $650K a year, with the additional 2 years at $750K a year.

Would also like to know what the assistants will be making. I think Preston and Jim were making around $100K a year. I'm guessing they were bumped up to about $150K a year. They deserve it.

In any event, these numbers will seem like ancient history in a couple years, if Dan gets URI to the Dance, and wins some games in it.

In that case, URI will be forking over at least $1 million a year for it's head coach, if they want to keep him, which I'm sure they will. That's the price of success these days.

Someone said that there is an NCAA requirement that head coaches have a college degree. Not in a position to look it up at the moment. Anyone know the answer to that off hand?

It's up to each school, but many do require it. What caught someone's attention, I think, was that a posting for an assistant coaching job at Rutgers listed a degree as a requirement. I don't see this affecting Jordan's job, but it's another mark against them. They talked so much about due diligence being done in this coaching search- but no one checked this before reporting it in all the school's press releases? Get it together, Rutgers.

I think just about every D-1 head coach has a degree. Rutgers is within its rights to hire him without one, I guess, but announcing that he had one? Well, more foolishness at Rutgers. Hurley must be grateful he avoided this.
