Man this is awesome. Such an exciting time.ATPTourFan wrote:So, I've received some very good news with regard to progress in making major enhancements to the in-game atmosphere in the Ryan Center.
This season's improvements are well known at this point:I'm told there will be news of one other major improvement for this season to be announced within the next several weeks.
- New Gorgeous Floor
- New NBA/Final Four style backstops w/ new rims and backboards
- New 40 foot LED video board at the scorer's table
For NEXT year, progress is being made on a complete refresh of the Ryan Center digital signage and video system. The bid for enhancements targeted for next season has been won by AJP, one of the world's top firms specializing in stadium/arena video. They have a very impressive portfolio and have designed the AV upgrades for Xavier's Cintas Center which should give you a general idea of what URI would like to do with the Ryan Center.
These are MAJOR plans to raise the fan experience in the Thomas M. Ryan Center to an entirely new level. There is so much being done to elevate URI Basketball to a championship level, nationally recognized program!

Only until advancements in light weight LED displays was it considered feasible.

Now if they can only dress the Ramettes properly and ratchet back the non-stop wall of sound, especially losing that inane "make some NOIIIIII-OIIIISE" clown. Crowd noise doesn't do any good when it's drowned out by the so-called game presentation.

Red, with you on the Ramettes. They should at least have a few throw-back nights when they use the old attire.
Keep in mind that the "clown" is a valued member of this community with the handle of EZ Buckets. I think it may be unfair to draw conclusions from that particular aspect of game presentation over the past few seasons where attendance has been poor.
I think this year will be easier for everyone, including John aka EZ Buckets.

Re: Next year's needs: Ryan Center In-Game Experience
The new breakthoughs in light materials are the main reason
an overhead scoreboard has become feasible.
John is a great guy, but I'd like a couple of timeouts without
all the bombast, just to be able to discuss the game, with those around me.
The PC games I've been to are at optimum volume from pre game all the way through
game end. Loads of promotions and racket.
Maybe I'm old school, but part of the fun of being at the game is
talking about what you're seeing. You can't if there's all sorts of
noise without end.
Red and I are on the same page with the real Ramettes. They were all
pretty tall, too, because the performances put an emphisis on long legs.

I'm looking forward to a time in the VERY near future where this clown won't have to even ask the crowd to make some noise as The RC will be buzzing with electricity from tip-off to buzzer without my intervention.
You've gotta have pretty thick skin just to walk on that court each night, so I don't take any offense to Red or anyone else's criticism. But everyone should make peace with the fact that in 2013 you are going to experience these in-game promotions during virtually every timeout in ANY game you attend coast to coast. It's not going anywhere.

Believe it or not, Buckets, I don't mean this personally. I realize you're only doing what you're paid to do. I apologize for my comments sounding personal.TruePoint wrote:EZ Buckets is the man compared to that fool who does the same thing at the Dunk for PC games. That guy is unbearable.
That said, the constant barrage of promotions saps energy from the crowd that should be focused on the game itself. And people here are talking about upgrading the band when those same promotions make the band superfluous.

Agree. I think it was disgusting that the only time the crowd got riled up, most games,
was during the T-shirt giveaways. You might think they were giving away Zegna or Canali suits,
judging by the mass hysteria.

Totally agree with Rod and others, EZBuckets does a great job trying to get a dead crowd into the games. I hope with a run of success we will be a much better crowd. Even if we aren't winning the Ryan Center should be rocking.

To add on to that...our crowd really has never been foaming at the mouth in the ryan center in the last few years. I had to run around til I was literally blue in the face to force people to stand up once in a while. It shouldn't have to come to that.RhodeIslandBred wrote:Totally agree with Rod and others, EZBuckets does a great job trying to get a dead crowd into the games. NC A&T's crowd is wild and they've had much less success that we've had. Down with the family fun! Bring back the real fans!

Nothing wrong with family fun.
When you have a family someday, you'll understand the concept.
Guarantee, my daughter knows more basketball than 80% of the people
sitting in the stands, talking to each other all game long
about their business, where they went on vacation, where they ate, what they're buying,
or whatever else pops into their minds.

No worries Red! I understand this is first and foremost a forum for fans of Rhody ball to discuss any and everything surrounding the program...which I know can include my role (as well as those of my co-workers in Athletics) and as I said, I take nothing personal.Rhode_Island_Red wrote: Believe it or not, Buckets, I don't mean this personally. That said, I'm first and foremost a lifelong, die-hard fan just like you guys. So much so that I'd honestly do what I do for free (don't tell Adam ). At the end of the day, I want what you guys want... a loud, rowdy Ryan Center, 20+ wins every season, and some more NCAA banners hanging in the rafters.
Now if you guys are complaining just because I never throw you a t-shirt...that's another story. You all are just blurry faces to me...and I aim for the kids anyway (excluding Blue Man).

Re: Next year's needs: Ryan Center In-Game Experience
The t-shirts should go to the kids. If I ever got one, I'd toss it to the nearest kid (unless my grandson was with me).

I swear during the break last season the SK band sounded BETTER than the regular pep band.

I remember long ago, the band being more involved in the actual game.
A drum roll after a fast break basket, sour notes made on an opponent's
missed free throw. That kind of thing.

Re: Next year's needs: Ryan Center In-Game Experience
This awesome announcement must have been the "mystery" one I was told about earlier. What a great surprise to have this in place before the season begins!
Yes, Rod. LEDs have full range dimming, instant on-off, and 80% power savings over the old metal-halide systems used at the Ryan Center. Not to mention virtually NO maintenance over their expected 10-15yr life, the school will likely get full pay-back on this investment in just a couple years (my guess).
EDIT: I've confirmed the LED lighting WAS indeed the mystery major upgrade.

A project this big and important (lights and court) really is a team effort, from the Vice President for Administrations' office, to the Ryan Center/Global, to the Athletic department.
It's really refreshing to see three entities like that come together and really improve the fan experience operationally.

I hope the greeks bring more to the game than being too cool to do shit but sit there, do some fratty thing at halftime, and leave.
I do think the best heckling i've ever heard at a URI game was when one fan was yelling at the sorority girls reminding them that they spend enough time on their back, and they should try standing and yelling now that their mouths aren't full of.....food, or something.
Call me skeptical until they actually become fans and don't just sit there because it's a cool thing to do
