MASTER LIST - Current and Former URI Players and Recruits

Unread post by SGreenwell »

In the interest of shrinking the number of pinned threads we have, this one will be the master list for recruiting threads for any player that: 1) Gave a verbal commitment to URI or signed with us. 2) Played basketball for URI. I'll do my best to keep this updated and current, but things might have to wait here and there at the end of seasons, as players transfer. If I've forgotten anyone, feel free to leave a post in here and I'll try to update.

Players are organized by current roster, and then sorted by high school graduation year, as they are in the Recruitment Corner forum. In all groups, they are sorted by last name, and it includes the name of the head coach(es) they played for or were recruited by.

Note as of 3/28/24 - Shifted Montgomery and Ray Allen III. Note 3/29/24 - Still adding players, done through page 12. Added some more on 4/15/24. Added Lawrence and moved Hammond on 4/17/24.

- Jamarques Lawrence, G, played 2022-24 with Nebraska before transferring to URI. Miller.
- Always Wright, PG, played 2023- with URI. Miller.

2024
- Ben Hammond, PG, signed LOI for 2024-25 but later asked for release. Miller.

2023
- Ray Allen III, G, preferred walk-on for 2023- with URI. Miller.
- Connor Dubsky, G, played 2023-24 with URI. Miller.

2022
- Nate Brafford, F/C, verbal but decommit after Cox fired. Ended up at Georgia Southern. Cox.
- Jeremy Foumena, C, redshirt 2022-23 and played 2023-24 with URI. Miller.
- Louis Hutchinson, G, played 2022-23 with URI before transferring to Charleston Southern. Miller.
- KC Nwafor, F, verbal but decommit / never academically eligible. Now playing low level pro basketball in New Zealand. Miller.
- Chance Stephens, G, decommit after Cox was fired. Played with Loyola Marymount, then transferred to Maryland but suffered bad injury in preseason and did not play 2023-24 for them. Cox.
- Rory Stewart, PF/C, played 2022-24 with URI. Miller.
- Sebastian Thomas, PG, played 2021-23 with URI before transferring to Albany. Cox then Miller.

2021
- Ileri Ayo-Faleye, F, played nine games for URI in 2021-22 before transferring to Vermont. Rotation player and starter for them. Cox.

- Luis Kortright, G, played 2023-24 with URI. Miller.
- Ishmael "Ish" Leggett, G, played 2020-23 with URI before transferring to Pittsburgh. ACC Sixth Man of the Year for 2023-24 and also a member of the All-Tourney team. Cox, retained by Miller for one year before deciding to transfer.
- Abou Ousmane, C, verbal commitment but never played for URI. Stints at North Texas and Xavier following decommit. Cox.
- Alex Tchikou, C, played 2022-23 with URI before transferring to Detroit. Miller.
- Elijah Wood, G, verbal but decommitted. Initially at Nebraska, then Eastern Illinois, a junior college and then St. Peter's. Cox.

2019
- Greg Hammond, G, played with URI for 2019-20, transferred to UMass-Lowell where he played sparingly from 2020-22. Transferred down to Southern Arkansas (D-II) for 2022-24, two year starter for them. Cox.
- Anthony Harris, signed with URI for 2022-23 season, did not play before transferring to St. Thomas (NAIA). Miller.
- D.J. Johnson, PF, played 2019-21 for URI. He transferred to Kent State, played half a year and then got suspended indefinitely. Didn't play pro ball as far as I can tell. Cox.
- Mekhi Long, F, played 2019-20 for URI before transferring to Old Dominion for three years, and finishing up at Virginia Tech. Cox.
- Naheem McLeod, C. Never verballed here, but inspired a 22-page thread on Keaney Blue. In probably the only circumstance of this I can remember, he verballed to Florida State, did not qualify, played 2020-21 at Chipola (JC) and then actually ended up at Florida State for 2021-23. He then transferred to Syracuse for 2023-24, starting their first 14 games before injuring his foot and having season ending surgery. I have no clue if he has eligibility left, but if so, he'd be 25 for the 2024-25 season. Cox recruit target.

2018
- Brendan Adams, G, verbal to URI but decommitted and followed Hurley to UConn. Three years as a rotation player for the Huskies, before transferring to George Washington and playing 30+ MPG his final two years, although production didn't quite match scouting at either stop. Has played in Latvia and Turkey since graduating. Hurley.
- Allen Betrand, G, played with URI from 2020-21. He transferred to Rider and then Norfolk State, where he was MEAC sixth man of the year. Cox.
- Jalen Carey, G/F, played with URI from 2020-23. Cox, then Miller.
- Amir Harris, G, verbal to URI but decommitted when Hurley got a verbal from Brendan Adams, who also didn't end up at URI. (Oh sweet irony...!) Ended up at Nebraksa for one year, before transferring to George Washington for three years, where he was blocked by... Brendan Adams for playing time. College hoops, you gotta love it! Hurley.
- Jermaine Harris, PF/C, played with URI from 2018-21 before transferring to New Mexico State, but he never played for them. Signed by Hurley, retained by Cox.
- Marial Mading, F, signed with URI but essentially redshirted, not getting into a game in 2018-19. He then transferred to Chipola JC, played there for a year, then transferred to Pacific, where he lasted a single game before leaving and turning pro. His pro career lasted nine games. Cox.
- Malik Martin, G/F, played for Charlotte two years before transferring to URI and playing from 2020-23. Younger brother of URI great Hassan Martin. Later landed as a graduate assistant on Hurley's UConn staff. Cox then retained by Miller.
- Tyrese Martin, G, played for URI from 2018-20 before transferring to UConn for two years. Drafted in the second round by the Warriors, traded to the Hawks almost immediately, and logged 16 games for them before being waived at the end of the year. G-League player now with the Wolves affiliate. Signed by Hurley, retained by Cox, but then transferred to play for Hurley.
- Daron "Fatts" Russell, G, with URI from 2017-21. Bench spark plug as a freshman on an NCAA team, segued into main offensive option and ballhandler for his next three years at URI, although struggled with injuries at times. 2x All-A10. Transferred to Maryland for fifth year in 2021-22, where he was pretty much the same player during a lame duck season for Mark Turgeon and Danny Manning. Turned pro and excelled for teams in Turkey from 2022-24. Hurley then retained by Cox.
- Dana Tate, G/F. Promising wing at URI in 2018-19, but bounced from the 2019-20 team after multiple violations of team rules. He transferred to Siena for 2020-21, but never played for them, dismissed from the team during the year he had to sit. He surfaced at Norfolk State for his final two years, averaging 25+ MPG and playing in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. Playing professional basketball in Portugal and Slovakia as of 2024. Hurley recruit retained by Cox.
- Aris Tsourgiannis, F, a.k.a. The Greek God of Fouls. So nicknamed because he got into one game of the 2018-19 season, and logged 4 fouls in 1 minute of playing time against Bryant. He was pretty much in street clothes for games after that and transferred shortly afterward. Maybe somewhat bizarrely, there's no record of him playing basketball from 2019 to 2022, but he then surfaces in the box scores for 15 games of the second level of Greece basketball, so his playing career seemingly isn't over. Hurley.

2016
- Eric Dadika, G, preferred walk-on at URI from 2016-20, playing in 33 games and logged 52 minutes played. Graduated with an accounting degree from URI, and now works in that field in New Jersey for NRG. Hurley.
- Jeff Dowtin, PG, four year player at URI from 2016-20. Took over at point shortly into his freshman year and was a mainstay in the lineup after that, starting 114 of his 128 games at URI. On the final two Hurley NCAA teams, and made third team All-A10 his senior year. As of 2024, last URI player that's played NBA ball, as he's stuck as a back of the bench player or G-League all-star for the past three years. Hurley, retained by Cox.
- Cyril Langevine, C, four year player at URI from 2016-20. Started as a rotation reserve big man his first two years, before getting full-time minutes his final two years. 1x All-A10, 1x All-A10 Defense. One of the best rebounders ever at URI at 6'8" and 230, averaging 10.3 his senior year. After graduating, a successful pro career in Sweden, Poland, Greece, Italy and France. Still active as a pro. Hurley, retained by Cox.
- Mike Layssard Jr., F, played sparingly with URI 2016-18, a total of 21 games and 60 minutes. As far as I can tell, he did not surface at another school after that. I think his father is an assistant coach in Louisiana still, and his brother (I think) Omarion is now playing for Louisiana Christian (NAIA). Hurley.
- Jeremy Sheppard, G. Started college career with East Carolina, dropped down to a junior college for one year, then signed with URI before 2019-20, which he sat out because of transfer rules at the time. Played 2020-22 for URI, followed by a pro career in Turkey and Greece. Cox.
- Michael Tertsea, C. Redshirted his freshman year, played 15 games between 2017-19 for URI. Played 2019-20 at D-II Gannon College, before finishing up at Siena College in 2021-22. Seemingly not playing pro ball. Hurley.
- Antwan Walker, PF. Recruited by URI out of high school, he did a prep year and reclassified to 2017. Signed with Georgetown and played 2017-18 for them, but dismissed from team. Sat out 2018-19, played with URI 2019-22 before transferring to Bryant for 2022-23. Playing pro ball in Lithuania, Finland and Northern Europe as of 2024. Cox.

2015
- Leroy Butts, F, signed with URI but did not academically qualify, at which point his LOI expired. Did a prep year, committed to Coastal Carolina for 2016-17 season but seemingly did not play for them. Finally surfaced at Radford and played 2017-20. Hurley.
- Ryan Preston, F, played with URI from 2017-19. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2021 in a car accident overseas, where he was playing pro ball. Hurley.
- Rex Sunahara, F, a football player that was also a walk-on very briefly for the basketball team. He got into three games in the 2015-16 season, playing three minutes and logging 1 rebound. He was a long snapping specialist, and afterward, transferred to West Virginia. He was a walk-on and back-up long snapper there for two years, before starting for two years. Over the past four years, he's spent time on the practice squads for the Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers, and played for the UFL's San Antonio Brahmas. His brother RJ was a D-II basketball champion, and recently finished his senior year at Georgia after transferring there. Jim Fleming and Hurley.

2014
- Andre Berry, C. Played at St. Andrew's and then did a year at the New Mexico Military Institute (JC) before transferring to URI. A project big man that took time to acclimate to the pace of D-I hoops, he worked his way up from 16 GP and 14 GP his first two years to 34 GP and 17.5 MPG his senior year in 2017-18. Briefly played pro ball in lower level leagues in Spain and Finland from 2018-22. Now a graduate assistant for UConn. Hurley.
- Jarvis Garrett, PG, played four years with URI from 2014-2018. Transitioned from starting PG to backup as time went on. Pro career throughout Europe. Hurley.
- Rokas Gustys, C. He did not verbal to URI or anything, but including because it is a legendary Keaney Blue recruiting thread. About 17 pages of posts, and he didn't recruit to somewhere else - Hofstra - until page 16. He played four years for Hofstra from 2014-18, earned All-CAA twice. He's had a pro career size, playing for teams in Spain, Ukraine and Lithuania. Recruited by Hurley.
- Jared Terrell, G. Pursued hard by URI out of high school, but initially signed with Oklahoma State. Decommitted from there, signed with URI, and had four great years here, 2014-18. All-A10 for 2017-18 and All-A10 freshman. Not drafted, but signed to a two-way contract by Minnesota, who he played 14 games for in 2018-19. Since then, played professionally for teams in Israel, Ukraine and Turkey from 2019-23. Unclear if done with pro ball, or in contract limbo because he last played in Israel, or something else. Hurley.

2013
- Kuran Iverson, F. Played 27 games with Memphis across his first two college years, and transferred to URI. He obtained a waiver, and played 2015-17 for the Rams. Versatile 6'10" wing that could defend multiple positions. Cousin of NBA great Allen Iverson but not close to him. Played in the G-League in 2017-18, before playing in New Zealand through 2019. Later surfaced in Ice Cube's Big Three league for 2022 season. Recovering from surgery as of 2023. Hurley.
- Hassan Martin, F/C, from 2013-17. An all-time great for URI, notching 2x All-A10, 3x All-A10 Defense, 2x A10 DPOY. Finished with 320 blocks, despite "only" being 6'7", and just an all-around fantastic big man. Part of two URI tournament teams. Since graduating, he has been an active pro in Japan, Greece and Adriatic leagues. Hurley.
- E.C. Matthews, a.k.a. Elbert Clark, G. All-timer that played at URI for five years, 2013-18. Suffered a bad knee injury on the first game of the 2015-16 season that unfortunately made that a lost season for the Rams, and lowered his draft stock from a potential NBA lottery pick. Came back strong his junior and senior years, leading URI to NCAA tournaments both years. 3x All-A10, A10 Rookie of the Year, A-10 Tournament MVP in 2017. Played in Finland in 2018-19, the G-League in 2019-20, and Portugal for 2020-21. Since then, logged time for teams in Iceland, Spain and the Czech Republic. Active pro basketball player. Hurley.

Great stuff! Was it Tate who broke into the impound lot to get his car?
