I'll never forget that loss to Duke in 1978.

If we had won that game, imo we were going to the FF.

The next 2 games were at the Providence Civic Center.

We might even made it to the final against Kentucky.

That and the Stanford game are the 2 biggest "what ifs" in the programs history.

What could have been.

Even further back, Duke eliminated URI in close games in both 1978 and 1988 that were each decided by just one point. 0-3 versus them all time in the NCAA.
Our 30-point blowout loss against St. Joe's and our two losses against Davidson are why we played Duke in 2018.. We were a 4-6 seed for most of the year. We could have avoided playing a 1-2 seed in the second round, but we lost those games, and the rest is history.
Remains a mystery why the team was so unprepared for that game vs St Joe’s…

Changed our situation completely agree.
Can't say that. The draws are so random - it's not seeding it's the teams. If we had been an 8 seed in the South region, we'd have taken on K State and then UMBC. If we were a 7 seed in that bracket it would've been Texas and Cinci.

We had zero chance with 3 teams in the tournament that year. We lacked size, but we had probably the best depth/collection of guards in the country. There were 3 teams I thought we'd get bounced against. Duke, Kansas, and Michigan State. As it was all 3 of them were in our same bracket.

We could've been anywhere between a 6-11 seed that year, and being on that seed line in the South bracket meant we were facing Duke or Michigan State in the second round. That was going to be the end no matter what.

If we were a 6-11 seed in any other bracket I firmly believe we were a final four team.

At least sweet 16. Still puzzling that Dan decided to roll with just Cyril and Andre that year.

Still would have fared better against most any other Duke team. Of course they had two 7 footers on that particular team.

Yep. Yeah small ball is preferred, but not necessarily at the 5.

Used to have up to 3 bigs on the court at a time and now it's 1 or 2.

Almost every single good team left in the tournament has a dude 6'10 or bigger, including NW and FAU right now.

I'm fine with Fuchs, I'm fine with using undersized bigs, but you want at least one of them to have 6'10 plus size that can match up with anyone.

Keegan Records with yet another tournament berth on Colgate, although this is going about as well as the previous ones did. Baylor is up 20 with four minutes left in the first half. Records has eight points on 4-of-4 shooting, two turnovers. Baylor is shooting 61 percent from the field. Excluding the jump in production from his freshman to sophomore year, Records has one of the most consistent per-40 stat lines you'll see, with small fluctuations up and down across the board.

Basketball is such a game of rhythm and momentum that I hate seeing a TO in that spot.

I get why some coaches do it and that they see things with their teams that I don’t. But as a fan of the game it spoils the building excitement.

Not rooting for either team. But when Northwestern defensively rebounded the ball with a couple minutes left and then had a clear fast break advantage on FAU past half court and the Refs blew the whistle because FSU's Golden went to the floor that was poor officiating. The Ref should now have halted play when FAU had the advantage.

Replay shows Golden getting an elbow to the head and then went to the floor. Looked like an inadvertent elbow in the rebounding action to me.

Northwestern loses the advantage on offense. Play is stopped. Flagrant 1 is called. Golden gets 2 FT's plus FAU gets the ball as well. Huge turnaround in a very tight game, late in the game. The Ref's probably knew then should not have stopped action due to Golden going to the floor or somebody told them they screwed up. Ref's are then put in a position to try to justify why they stopped play and then physiologically pressured to call the Flagrant 1.

At that point I started rooting for Northwestern.

With seconds remaining the NW player brushed his hand over Golden't head. Just like touching his hair on the top of his head. But Golden does a delayed reaction like that hair brushing really hurt him. That made me doubt the overreaction to the rebounding elbow.

No place for faking injuries in basketball or flopping. Glad Northwestern took FAU out big time in OT.

Charles Barkley just called it a lucky break on a very bogus flagrant foul call.

I was going to give the official the benefit of the doubt on that, because that's the kind of play that's usually a foul 9 times out of 10... But even in real time, the announcers thought it was all-ball. The trailing official on the left / bottom of the screen saw it fine, and didn't call anything. It was the cross court official that was didn't have as good of a look that made the call; he was closer, but he was kind of screened by the Kansas player. It was also a very late whistle - He didn't make the call until the Kansas player ended up on the deck.

Both of the AAC teams, FAU and UAB, go out in the first round. The trajectory of this league looks to be headed down after all its big name departures. Lost Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF a year ago will soon lose SMU (ACC bound). Has already or will soon add Charlotte, FAU, N Texas, Rice, UAB, and UTSA for basketball. It had been ahead of the A-10 in most metrics and perception prior to this year. The A-10 however looks to have jumped ahead of it again this past season.

Ya, I agree it's all about matchups.

I'm only talking about avoiding the 1-2 seeds in the second round that year... That's what I wanted to do that year. Yes, I know crazy things can happen, like a 16-seed winning, but overall, you have a much better shot at making the Sweet 16 by being a 4 or 5 seed and avoiding the 1-2 seeds in the second round. If we didn't blow those winnable games and win the A10 tournament, I think we were, at worst, a 5 seed. I think we would have made the Sweet 16 that year. I still can't believe we lost to Davidson not once, but twice at the end of that year. We actually weren't playing our best basketball at that point. We peaked earlier that year. Even in the games we won in the A10 tournament, we didn't dominate like we were earlier in the year.

I always wondered if Dan having one foot out the door was one of the reasons we looked worse late that season. I didn't expect us to lose that badly to Duke. Oklahoma was also overrated. I thought we would have beaten them comfortably like we did Creighton. Anyway, it is what it is. It was a very special year, but that team could have gone deeper. It's incredible how far we have fallen from then.
