Re: '14 WI PG - Jarvis Garrett (URI Verbal Commit)
Adding talent next year, only means EC and Hassan will likely not see
success as a team until they're seniors.
THIS was the year to add talent.
To depend on freshman talent is dubious. It took EC seven games to break the lineup and
Hassan 13 games.
We've seen even with the top five guys nationally, how up and down
Wiggins, Parker, Randle and Gordon were all season.
Nobody we get will be remotely on that level.
Adding Garrett and Watson is great, but we need a scorer, or next year
could be less than all of us would like.

Re: '14 WI PG - Jarvis Garrett (URI Verbal Commit)
Rod is right. We need consecutive years of quality recruits (hello mr. obvious)...even if we get another group like last year, we are probably still 2 years away...EC and HM's junior year, before we are a real force. If we don't get the players we need this year, then we are looking at their senior seasons. Now in basketball you can win with 3 stars and the right role players, and if JG is the star we think, then we may have enough.
But I stated at the end of the season that I thought we need another scorer, and others responded that we had plenty for next year. My opinion has not changed, and I would still like a scorer. While I'm stating what I'd like; a true center wouldn't hurt either.

RIFan, one of the people who thought we had enough shooters
was our coach.
When I asked him the question, it was,"Oh, yeah...."
I don't care where he comes from, we need one more for next year.

With one senior this was supposed to be a low-volume recruiting year. So they went hard for Terrell (to replace X).
Then Hare left.
Aaman answered a friend's early morning call for help.
Powell lost his starting job, became a problem and left the team.
Now there were at least four holes and it was a high-volume recruiting year. They tried to jump in on some high school seniors but they were behind. Hurley is very big on building relationships and it's hard to do quickly.
So they got Watson to replace either Hare or Aaman.
They got Garrett to replace Powell, and that came very close to not happening.
They lost out on Terrell, and I think it's a fair criticism that they should have been able to quickly move to Plan B when that happened.
So now they'll bring in a wing who can play right away and score, while they go hard after a shooter in '15.
maybe they get lucky again and they get Gustys.
But considering everything that happened, i think they've done a decent job of scrambling. If Gil has a monster season and Biggie, JR and Iffy show any improvement, Garrett adjusts as quickly as EC did ... A lot of ifs, but it could happen.
But I'm waiting to see what Hurley does in '15 to further judge his recruiting.

Re: '14 WI PG - Jarvis Garrett (URI Verbal Commit)
Totally agree we need more... But not many guys on the board left.
A Hail Mary this spring would be great. Just doesn't look good.
For me, luckily college basketball is the place where things don't always go the way they are supposed to. If EC becomes a POY candidate, and Hass becomes a guy that translates into more wins, then we are half way there.
The reality of todays game is that teams keep it close until their dominant player or two takes over usually under 8 minutes. If EC and Hass can dominate their opponents then we win. Doesn't mean we need 13 basketball players we are all excited about.
I understand guys want the players on par with the stars of yesterday or teams built similarly. Its just unlikely we will have that and there are many ways to win a basketball game. I think if we make it anywhere exciting it will be with players and teams that are greater than the sum of their parts. Obviously I want guys that can shoot, put it on the deck, not foul, play D, rebound, good grades, and not be a felon. I just think in 2014 it is harder to get lucky at URI with putting together the best backcourt in all of the NCAA as has been done in the past.
68 teams in the big tourn, 32 in the NIT. 100 teams make a post season.

Re: '14 WI PG - Jarvis Garrett (URI Verbal Commit)
As I've said endless times before, Jim Harrick used to say,
"you need to be hard to guard."
What he meant simply was, scorers on different places on the floor.
Usually in college ball, you need three guys who can score, and at least one needs to be a forward
or a center, plus a guard and a wing, or both guards.
We have a potentially terrific back court for the future, with EC and Jarvis.
Hassan could be the third man, if he steps up his offense. Gil, could be the third guy,
if he can solve his "Gil problem".
On our Elite 8 team, we had a superb sixth man in Preston, for instant offense and
change of pace defense.
This is how I view whatever wing/scorer becoming. A jolt off the bench, a spot starter,
a guy who finishes the game on the floor, even if he doesn't start.
You have complimentary players, who fill roles.
You don't need stars at each position. You don't need four and five star guys to win
in college basketball.
Our base seems good. Now we need to round out the roster.
Iggy, a 2 star PG recruited by lower level D-1 programs? I don't see it, given the needs of the team.
I hope this is bad information.
The other guy, Obi-Wan Kenobi is a 6'4" scorer, who shoots at good percentages. For some reason,
he's unranked and not highly recruited.
I hope we're not going the route we did last spring, when Butler was signed.

I hope it's bad information, because I'm thinking terrible things when I see URI involved with two '14 PGs this late.

I'm seeing now that he's 6-3 or 6-4 and a shooter, and some are surprised that he wasn't more heavily recruited. So maybe URI is looking at him as a 2G and not a PG.Iggy1979 wrote:Oh boy..

We figured there were players out there that URI was chasing that we didn't know about. Maybe this one of them.

No, I'm being realistic. When he announced, he hadn't made his
manditory score and he was a course short.
That's where I'm coming from.
Iggy, that kid is big enough and shoots it well enough to be a sleeper.
I'm just hoping he's not another Butler type signee.

It's been a while since that info on Garrett came out.
Hopefully someone can update the situation. ACT's are this month, I think.
He sounds very upbeat, no reason to think there's any problem right now.
