Rod, again as we know, URI has [or will soon] hit a home run with this hire. Let's just hope, that the next hire will keep things going in an upward direction.

I would think that if Thorr and Dooley are still here when that happens, we'll get another good one.

Again, don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves here, but with URI's track record, it's hard not to.

Dan will be here for a while. There, I've said it! How long, will depend on several factors.

Commitment to the program by EVERYONE involved. That means not just money, as in program improvements and coaching staff compensation. Last but not least, success on the court. The short term recruiting losses are somewhat of a setback, but I'm sure Dan is looking big picture. The only thing that would worry me concerning recruiting, is if Dan finds, in the next couple of years, that he just can't get the players he wants due to URI's shortcomings compared to the big boy schools.

Just how far can he go here? That might be the ultimate issue for him.

You can win with 3 star players.
This staff is savvy enough to be able to coach people up to
their potential.
We'll be seeing some of that coaching with Jordan Hare this season.
I'm not worried about recruiting, if staff isn't.
Looks like it was Terrell or nothing at SG, and they've turned
their attention to SF.

Agreed, except the only issue to me, is that in 2 years, we'll have a lot of seniors meaning a lot of turnover. That continuity thing we like to talk about. I mean, some of this is due to the number of transfers, but Dan had to do that, or else success would take a lot longer to happen.

I just bought 4 tickets to the George Mason game on Saturday 01/18.

Rod,

I did mention Penders in the 2nd paragraph of my previous post. I still have the VHS game tapes from the Missouri, Syracuse, and Duke games. I remember coming home from school to watch URI pound Derrick Cheivous and Missouri. Good times!

Yup! Kenny Green destroying Derrick Coleman, Silk outplaying Sherman Douglas.
We had no answer for Ronnie Seikely (sp?) Big lead on top ranked Orange
almost lost on a last second three pointer.
That Duke game still bothers me. They let that goon Danny Ferry kill Kenny Green,
and never called a thing. We still only lost by 3.
One memory was a bunch of State Legislators, relatives and staff members snagging
tickets that real URI fans would have killed for.
One guy went there specifically to root for Duke, because his daughter went there.
Most of the rest were well known PC people.
Only in Rhode Island!

I literally spent five consecutive hours on the phone, continuously getting a busy signal, to try to get tickets to the Meadowlands. When I finally got through, nothing left. At that point, I was a donor and season ticket holder for thirteen years. Whatever, and yes, I thought Ferry got away with a heck of a lot that evening.

I was at that game, pretty good seats(I was not and never have been a state legislator!!). The thing I remember most was during a Duke fast break Kenny and Ferry where at the opposite end out of the picture and attention of everyone and Ferry sucker punched Kenny with a quick backhand fist to the face(Kenny was behind him to the right with his head down and they were both jogging back up the court). I happened to be looking right at them and went nuts. I scared everyone around me and my brother thought I was having a heart attack.

Weird that was my most vivid memory that night, other than meeting C Koussa for the first time later that night in a Howard Johnson's on 95 on the way home. I had managed to avoid him up to that time and now my life has changed forever.

We knew going into that game with Duke that Ferry wasn't going to foul out and that we needed a big lead going into the last few minutes.
We ought to start a thread of Carl Koussa stories. Could be fun. I know I've got a bunch.

I have a tape of the game and the rally at the beginning of the second half to temporarily take the lead was my favorite part. There was a play where Garrick was trapped in the corner, he drove around his man on the baseline where he was cut off, you can actually hear Evans yell "foul line chief" and the ball went right to John for an open jumper. Yes, Brent and Packer said it correctly - they really did know where they were on the court and all times.

agree with rod, so likable and a true underdog story. a bunch of guys on that team had the skills to play at higher levels (silk the gunshot, tommy the football player, kenny and his knees, evans being undersized, mergin was a SHU transfer i believe), but their was a reason or circumstance that led them to URI. a perfect example of guys coming together that knew their roles and performed them at high levels every night. with Silk as the maestro.

Manhattan's a solid team- expected to contend for their conference title (with, among others, Iona and that other school in Buffalo).

It's just a scrimmage and "secret" in that no stats are supposed to be kept and no one can watch. I think each team gets 2 total scrimmages and/or exhibitions per season. The scrimmages are very loose- not necessarily 40 minutes and can be used to set up certain game situations, for example. They're useful but kind of strange in that coaches aren't supposed to officially talk about what happened (not unlike Fight Club) but everyone knows about them

Yes, scrimmages between D1 teams are called "secret" because they are closed to the public and coaches/staff are not allowed to discuss what happened during them.. a la Fight Club.

How sure are you on the stats being kept? Saw an image over the weekend of the boxscore of the Xavier/Ohio "secret" scimmage. Full legit boxscore, and Ohio won the scrimmage 84-75. Assumed it was real.

You don't talk about "secret scrimmages"

I wonder if the coaches have to sign a disclaimer stating " Any description of this scrimmage, without the signed, written consent of the NCAA is strictly prohibitted."

Ramfan85, so according to Andy Katz and his contacts at the NCAA, there's no real rule stating that coaches cannot talk about these scrimmages. It will take some time for coaches to learn this, since they are rightly concerned about breaking any NCAA guidelines.

Goodman has tweeted that a few times. Everyone's observed this.

Luckily, Rhody has their secret scrimmage, public exhibition this Friday, and next Friday's game vs Maine to tune up to the new officiating standard before the games get tough.

At about the 28th minute of this week's ESPN College Hoop Podcast with Andy Katz and Seth Greenburg, Andy confirms that you can discuss "secret" scrimmages AFTER the fact, but NOT before in any kind of promotional way.

In fact, he discusses a scrimmage with Baylor's coach Scott Drew.
