But I am still going with my original prediction of our starting 5 and my thoughts from then:
Lassiter (G)
Covington (G)
Cairns (G)
Squires (F)
Magassa (C)

With losing all our top players and most of our scoring, I see this as a tough transition season.
This team will have its struggles, especially in the early part of the season with all the new faces.

I feel that UMass will easily be the odds-on favorite to win the A10 with all their firepower coming back.

77,

I don’t see this as a transition year at all. Tammi added experience and improved outside shooting which was a weakness on last years team. Not a surprise to have so much talent as Tammi enters her 4th year at URI. She has quickly turned this program around and it continues trending up

I don't like predicting the starting lineup because I trust Tammi immensely to start the best players and to substitute effectively. This team is deeper and more talented than last year's team. Predicting a starting 5 is even tougher when 8 of 14 players are from outside the US.
More important who finished than who starts.

Tammi brought in 3 transfers from A10 teams, all were A10 6th Man POY award winners. All 3 were starters at Top A10 Programs Richmond, VCU and Dayton.

US - 6
France -6
Israel - 1
Estonia - 1

Emma Squires - Richmond. 6’2” F. 5th year. 2021-22 6th man A10 POY
Madison Hattie-Covington - VCU. 5’10” G. 6th year. 2019-20 6th man A10 POY
Tenin Magassa - Dayton. 6’5” C. Will be a JR. 2021-21 6th man A10 POY and was All Rookie Freshman. From France
Dolly Cairnes is a returning starter who will be a JR.

Team those 4 up with these 10:

Maye Toure 6'2" JR from France. Physical, good rebounder, strong defensively.
Sayawni Lassiter 5'10" GRAD Transfer from Rutgers
Emmi Rinat 6' SOPH from Israel. Can shoot the lights out when hot.
Sophie Phillips 5'7" SOPH
Howa Kamera 6' SOPH from France
Sophi Sene 6'3" SOPH from France
Anete Adler 6'5" FR from Estonia
Chantelle Blagrove 5'9" FR
Anaelle Dutat 6' FR from France
Ines Debroise 5'9" Freshman from France

Tammi already has 3 freshmen who committed in their JR years. All 3 participated in Tammi’s recent summer camp and I heard good things about all 3. Sophia Vital, Katie Ledden and Eva DeChent already make up a great Class of 2023 before their SR years even start. All 3 visited URI this month. Dan Hurley style High School recruiting. Know who you want and recruit them early. Create an environment with a winning attitude that good players want to be part of.
Ramster I do like the energy that Tammi brought to the women's basketball team.

Yes, all the transfers should have an immediate impact and maybe some of the freshmen.

Still replacing 4 starters and almost all our scoring is a big hill to climb.
That is why I am tempering my expectations for this season.

I am excited about our future especially with the '23 recruiting class,

Just a guess Ramster, but I think we will finish in the middle, possibly 6-8.
I don't see the NCAAT and even the NIT may be too much of a reach.

UMass should lead the way, followed closely by La Salle.
Fordham and St. Joe's return a lot.
Also, Richmond and Davidson could be sleepers and they have talent.
We can be in that mix along with VCU and Duquesne.

Loyola is a little unknown at this point.

Ramster, you asked me to go out on the limb with my prediction, where do you see us finishing?

You're right Jersey, it's just a guess. This team is bigger, faster, deeper and more athletic than last year's team. They will be neck and neck with UMASS and Dayton just as they were last year. You're picking six teams to finish ahead of them. I don't think so. It's great that you have interest in the team but don't be so dismissive. They are a talented group. Let's see where the coaches pick them when they convene.

77,
I see us Top 3 with the potential for 1st place. NCAA Bid. Minimum would be NIT. Not a transition year.
As I said earlier, this is a better shooting team than last years group. Shooting proficiency hurt us last season.
-Taller and stronger than last years team
-Faster and more athletic
-Deeper in overall talent
-More talent
-Good passers and ball handlers - better than last year
-Better shooting than last year
-3 Proven, experienced, talented transfers from Dayton, VCU and Richmond with all 3 having been A10 6th men players of the year - amazing. All 3 were starters from Tier 1 A10 Programs. All 3 Tammi and staff coached against. Tammi knows exactly what she is getting in these 3 players.

Train has left the station. This Coach gets it.

Ramster, I admire your optimism and hope you are right, but just don't see it.

You seem to diminish the caliber of players we lost:
Tahane- 1st Team A-10, led the team in scoring and rebounds. 20-21 A10 CO- POY.
Foppossi - 2nd Team A10
Elmore - 3rd Team A10, 20-21 1st Team All-BE

Yes we added some nice transfers, but our team has no proven stars or all-conference players.

Look at our competition:
UMass returns 5 starters and their 6 top scorers.
Breen - A10 POY, 17 pts/10 rebs
Taylor - A10 2nd Team, 11 pts
Philoxy - A10 2nd Team, 11 pts
Mayo - Averaged 10 pts
Ngalakulondo - 9 pts/ 6 rebs

LaSalle also returns 5 starters, including:
Spruell - 1st Team A10, 16 pts/ 7 rebs.
Crawford- 11.5 pts/ 5 rebs.
Jacobs - Averaged 10 pts last season, 20-21 All A10 (3rd team)

Fordham returns 4 starters:
DeWolfe- 1st Team A10, 18 pts
Dingle - A10 3rd team, 15 pts/ 5 rebs
Heremaia- 11 pts/ 6 rebs
Downey - Team captain averaged 9 pts/ 6 rebs. 20-21 A10 3rd team

St Joe's, who beat us in the A10T last season:
Brugler- A10 ROY, 10 pts/ 6 rebs
Jerkot - Averaged 9.6 pts
Smith - A10 All-Rookie Team, 9 pts
Nystrom - Also A10-All-Rookie Team
Maurina - Transfer, All AEC (13 pts)

Richmond returns 4 starters including:
Budnick - A10 2nd Team, 13.6 pts/ 6 rebs.
Townsend - 10.4 pts/ 5 rebs

Davidson returns 5 players that had started including:
Sutphin- Leading scorer 13.4 pts
Morgan - All A10 Rookie Team (8pts)
Welch - Team captain, 11 pts
Deegan - Pre-season all A10 pick but got injured, averaged 10 pts

Duquesne returns 3 starters:
Myers- Leading scorer, 13 pts
McConnell - 9 pts/ 6 rebs
Johnson - 8 pts/ 4 rebs
Townsend - Transfer who started at Xavier last season, averaged 9 pts/ 5.5 rebs.

Johnson - 8 pts/ 4 rebs
Townsend - Transfer who started at Xavier last season, averaged 9 pts/ 5.5 rebs.
77,
I included last year's Conference and Overall Records in Red for each of the teams you have identified as having more returning players than URI.
4 of the teams you identified were below .500 last season in A10. Davidson and Duquesne were only 6-10. Good news might be they are returning most starters, but then that could also be bad news as how much better then 6-10 might they be?

You think I am demising the caliber of the players we lost. I was at all home games, watched all games. The last 3 games were the 3 biggest games of our season. We lost them all. Dayton was a huge game that winning would have earned us a NCAA Bid, 7-seed St Joseph's was a disappointing loss. St Joe had 4 of the 5 all Rookie team. Our experienced upperclassmen should not have lost to 7-8 (13-17) St Joe and we lost to Quinnipiac in the NIT.

Tammi learned from last season. She addressed weaknesses, especially as noted in those 3 biggest games.

A number of players on this roster are very capable of making 1st, 2nd, 3rd and/or All Rookie teams. But most important is Tammi wants to win the A10 and earn an NCAA Invitation.

77,

Looking at the last 3 games here are the key stats for our 5 starters vs:
  • 1st place Dayton last game of A10 play
  • 1st game of A10 Tournament vs 7-seed St Joseph's
  • 1st game of NIT vs Quinnipiac at the Ryan Center
Weaknesses including shooting proficiency and low numbers of assists. Our most assists were from our Center Tahane with 10 assists in the 3 games. Foppossi has only 1 total assist in the 3 games. Tahane was double Elmore and our PG Williams who had only 5 assists each over the 3 critical games.
Cairns was our best shooter but she struggled as teams keyed on her. Cairns needs guards who can find her open. She is a spot up shooter - does not create her own show as much as she needs good passing to find her open. Cairns had only 3 total assists.

I think Tammi has added size, shooting efficiency, defensive skills, athleticism and has added point guards capable of moving the ball with good passing. She knows exactly what needed to be addressed. This will be an exciting season. We are now with the Elite Tier 1 WBB Teams including Dayton, UMASS and VCU.

Right, you see them as you stated “I think we will finish in the middle, possibly 6-8”

I trust Tammi’s ability to identify talent, develop that talent and mold it into a successful team.
Bringing in 3 proven, experienced starters from 1st place Dayton (HC moved on to Illinois), 3rd place VCU and Richmond is awesome.
Combined with her freshmen recruits and off we go.

Tammi has made URI Tier 1. That’s where we are, upper echelon.

And just some food for thought:

When Shauna Green from Dayton moved on to HC Illinois in April the 1st post on Dayton’s Message Board was Shauna would likely take Tenin Magassa 6’5” with her to Illinois.

But no, Half right. Magassa left but to Tammi at URI

Magassa is from France.
  • In the biggest game of last year Dayton beat DePaul in a 1st four win in the NCAA Tournament. Magassa had 14 rebounds and 7 blocked shots - both season highs in 24 minutes (4 PF’s).
  • Her Freshman year Magassa had a career high 8 blocks vs St Louis in 36 minutes and a career high 19 rebounds vs St Louis in 29 minutes with an astounding 12 of those offensive.
Will be exciting to see how she does in her JR year at URI under Tammi and surrounded by fellow teammates/assistant coach from France.

Tammi is building her roster to achieve NCAA Tournament Success in addition to A10 success

Ramster

Just because I tempered my expectations for this season, doesn't mean I think less of Tammi.
I feel she has brought life and excitement into this program and knows how to recruit and build a roster.

I am not say saying we are falling off a cliff or becoming a bottom feeder.

This year with many new players and no proven stars (yet), it may take a little time.
I think we will be closer to middle of the pack than conference contenders, just for this season alone.

Like I said UMass and LaSalle should lead the way, they both look loaded.
Fordham also is close behind.

St. Joe's was very young last year with a talented group.
Both Richmond and Davidson return a lot and should show much improvement this season.

I also neglected to add VCU which also returns several starters including Te-Biasu (All-A10 3rd team)

Like I said, I hope that I am wrong in playing it too conservative with my prediction for us this season.

Didn’t say you think less of Tammi, only less of her than me.

No, didn’t say you saw URI as a bottom feeder. You said middle of pack.

Tammi has this team Tier 1 with Dayton, UMASS and VCU. I could be wrong but I’ve seen the 3 transfers play multiple times for Dayton, VCU and Richmond.

If we finish middle of pack you will be right, but many of us will be very disappointed with a year like that in Year 4 of Tammi.

BTW,
Fordham abruptly fired their HC after 11 years this summer.
Loyola Chicago fired their HC in March

4 HC Changes heading into this season:
Dayton: Shauna Green / Tamika Williams-Jeter

Fordham: Stephanie Gaitley /

Loyola Chicago: Kate Achter / Allison Guth

Saint Louis: Lisa Stone / Rebecca Tillett

Yes Ramster, that could dampen Fordham's chances.
I feel bad for the players, much was expected for them this season.

Very hush-hush on why Gaitley was abruptly terminated.
Suspiciously she was previously fired from St. Joe's for retaliating on a player who accused her husband (assistant coach) of sexual harassment.
Interesting that she will now be coaching Ocean City HS (NJ), who just fired their coach for bullying the players.

Dayton should have the biggest drop-off this season with all the players they lost and the coaching change.

Anyone that went to the game against Dayton last year knows what kind of factor Magassa can be. The box score only shows 3 blocks and 6 rebounds in 20 minutes, but that doesn't take into account the amount of shots that were offline because of her interior defense, and how many poor shots were taken because we didn't want to contest her inside

Kinda reminds me of the Hurley years 3-4 when people were slow to get on the train. I encourage people to simply get on the train and enjoy the ride. Not that often URI gets a Head Coach with the leadership skills, basketball knowledge, ability to sell the BB Program, fundraising skills, energy, confidence, hunger to continue to learn and desire to build a program as Tammi has. I felt it the first time I met her at her 1st Season Ticket Holder Event 4 years ago. She is amazing and has built an amazing staff.

Enjoy the thrill now, not after she and her team achieve their goals.

The future is now.

I was always on the Hurley train from the time we were discussing HC candidates replacing Baron and I never got off it.
I also loved Tammi's hire, she has so much enthusiasm and energy, plus very qualified and smart.

My thoughts are only about this upcoming season, not beyond that and our future expectations.

It will be us and UMASS neck and neck all year long just as it was last year with Dayton. Had we taken care of business last year, we would have been a two bid conference. It is my hope that we beat UMASS twice and we both run the table on everyone else. If we both get to the conference championship game, we will both be locks to make the tournament. That will be significant for the conference and our future.

Doubt very much UMass or URI is capable of running the table.

Cameron,
Last season we were a 2 bid conference
Dayton 11-seed
UMASS 12-seed

A10 WBB should be challenging for 2 bids again this season. Agree it’s a battle between URI and UMASS

I wish they would have Pre-Season All-Rookie Teams in these Predictions

Sure it’s difficult to select but Coaches know who the best incoming players are. They do a Post-Season All Rookie so why not Pre-Season?

URI should be ahead of LaSalle but the voting was very close. I’d have Fordham ahead of LaSalle as well, but again, the votes are a virtual tie for 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

Jersey,
Last year we ran the table with the exception of our two losses to Dayton, who also ran the table. A conference can be very competitive even if there are two teams separated from the pack. Not sold on La Salle. The biggest challenge for our team is to get the newcomers all on the same page. We have better talent than last year and much more height. Tough task but very doable. This program heading in the right direction.

Again maybe I am being to conservative with my thinking about our team, but I just feel there is too much depth and talent in the upper half of the conference for any team to run the table.

My concern is that we play the top preseason teams (1. UMASS 2. LaSalle 4. Fordham 5. VCU) only once expect for UMASS. Also, Fordham and VCU are away with LaSalle at home. You need to beat them on their turf and win against the less ranked teams. One slip could take you out of tournament contention. That is a huge challenge.

Ramster,

I am well aware the conference received two bids last year. It was because Dayton went undefeated in conference play and lost in the tournament. When I referencing becoming a two bid conference, I meant two teams get invited based on year long play with no upsets. If Dayton won the A10 Tournament last year and beat us in the finals, we would have gone; and vice versa. That would have been a big step for the conference. UMASS was not going if they didn't win the tournament. Hopefully, I cleared up my position.

Cameron,
I understand. If Dayton had won the A10 Tournament it would have been difficult to get an At-Large for any A10 Team.

I like the observations recently where Tammi was not happy with the way last season ended. She questioned having made winning the A10 Championship such a high priority that when we lost to Dayton the team got dejected and she couldn’t get them back. Love how she looks back, thinks what she could have done differently and then takes corrective action. A true leader.

I agree with you that this years team is bigger and more athletic. This is a better shooting team than last year. Dolly was our best shooter last season but teams keyed on her especially in the last several games. Dolly is a spot up shooter, needs players around her that can get her the ball. Tammi went out and got proven guards who can find the open shooter, she got more outside shooter, she got players proficient on the defensive end and she got size.

Tammi is building towards not just winning the A10 but challenging in the NCAA Tournament.

This team has a lot of size, talent, shooting ability and experience. Will be fun to watch.

I think this first game at Harvard will be a tough test, but hopefully we pull it out.
We should have a size advantage, they do have several bigs that are role players, but none that have really stood out.

Aside from that the rest of their squad looks pretty strong.
They return 4 starters and have all-conference caliber talent.

Returning impact players:
Turner- Ivy ROY, averaged 16 pts/6.5 rebs.
Forbes - All Ivy 2nd team averaged 14 pts/4 rebs.
Mullaney - All Ivy 2nd team averaged 12.7 pts/ 3.7 rebs.
McCarthy - Steady starter averaged 7.7 pts.
