Re: '15 Leroy Butts (Rhode Island Verbal)
This is a very nice get and exactly what Rhody needs. No question that this is a David Cox recruit. I liked the hire quite a bit when it was made and is already paying dividends.
Rutgers just finally hired an assistant to replace Cox (Greg shoes Ventrone). Most Rutgers fans are underwhelmed by the hire and I would agree. I guess this puts an end to the debate on the Rutgers board as to who was responsible for recruiting Butts, Jordan or Cox.
Exciting time to be a Rhody fan. I think this is the year we start seeing some results on the court and the future looks even brighter.

Not sure why this says that he is a 4 star on 247. I love this pickup and he looks like a solid player that will fit into DH's system. No disrespect, just keeping the facts on par. Proof is in the link below.

Ram Stampede, the rankings get updated. When that post was made he was a 4-star 90 grade, #102 on 247 sports. Once the rankings were updated his rank went down a little bit.
As Rod pointed out, it seems to be that when a player commits to a big name school (or a school in a major conference) their rank usually go up, and when they commit to a school like URI their rank go down a little bit. (See EC Matthews and Jordan Hare)

Re: '15 Leroy Butts (Rhode Island Verbal)
Unfortunately, that seems to happen with media/publicity surrounding our school. Its really bias and unfair and it's been going on for decades. Well hopefully the perception of our program is all about to change. Even though as a fan and an graduate, I feed off that negativity and don't mind being considered an underdog at all. What I do mind is the disrespectful garbage we receive on a local and national level. But I guess it comes with the territory. No one is going to give us anything. WE ARE GOING TO GO TAKE IT OURSELVES!Justns11 wrote:Ram Stampede, the rankings get updated. When that post was made he was a 4-star 90 grade, #102 on 247 sports. He was rated 90 on 247 (90-97 = 4 stars), they dropped him to an 89 so he would only be 3 stars. They must have done it when he verballed, the timeline on his page still shows his last rating in October 2013 and he was at 90.

Re: '15 Leroy Butts (Rhode Island Verbal)
If you look at earlier posts in this thread, it appears he was ranked lower as of 6/27, so not necessarily when he verballed to URI. There's a lot that can influence rankings, and it's not something I get concerned about. I'm more interested in seeing where the URI targets fall after the summer season.BFC wrote:He was rated 90 on 247 (90-97 = 4 stars), they dropped him to an 89 so he would only be 3 stars. “The program’s academics really caught me and my parents’ attention,” Butts said. “The basketball program fits me very well in the system coming from stretch forward to combo forward. I established a great relationship with the players and coach Dan Hurley, along with the rest of the coaching staff."

Ratings are nice, but I pay more attention to who else is recruiting the player. In this case it was Rutgers, Miami, Cincinnati, DePaul and Xavier. Good enough for me.

Re: '15 Leroy Butts (Rhode Island Verbal)
Very excited to have a recruit already in the fold for '15. Although things worked out great this past recruiting cycle, getting guys to commit early beats the hell out of holding our breath until May. Being able to be choosy with recruits is a huge luxury, one that Hurley and Co. seem to be on the brink of achieving. Butts sounds like an already solid player with room to improve, and here's hoping that he has a great AAU summer and a strong senior year.
On an entirely unrelated matter, I like how the terms "combo guard/forward" have come to replace "tweener." Makes it sound more positive.

I'm sure they're waiting until Providence has something positive happen. Then KMac will write a "hoops roundup" article where the Butts verbal will be mentioned deep in the article as an afterthought. In other words, we may not see it in print for quite awhile!!!

McNamara hasn't tweeted since June 28, and hasn't written something since June 27. So, I imagine he's on vacation. Poor timing for them, but still, it's a really slow time of the year for sports. I'm surprised they didn't ask another writer to just write something up on the quick.Billyboy78 wrote:Nice article by Bill. Still waiting for even a little blurb from Projo. Reebok Classic...
A recent Rhode Island commit, Leroy Butts was solid in his first game, making his presence felt as a face-up four with a solid mid-range game.

Re: '15 VA PF Leroy Butts (Rhode Island Verbal)
His AAU team, DC Premier, has won their first three games out at Fab 48. It looks like a pretty balanced team. Butts had 10/6 in the latest game (5 for 7); 8 points, 5 rebounds, 1 steal in another; and 6 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals in the first game.

Re: '15 VA PF Leroy Butts (Rhode Island Verbal)
Butts now has an ESPN ranking and summary: 3 stars (75)
ESPN Analyst
Updated 09/02/2014
Strengths:
Butts is yet another example that skill and savvy can counter not having elite explosiveness. He has fairly broad shoulders, soft hands, and long arms. The sinewy left-handed 4-man has an unorthodox release on his jump shot from the elbow, but it goes in more often than not. However, the most impressive aspect of his game is innate ability to convert buckets in traffic and snatch rebounds against players who have significant height advantage. He has savvy foot work in the paint (up-and-unders) and he utilizes the up-fake very well keep defenders off balance. He is a natural rebounder who relies on his instincts to snatch rebounds in traffic. His soft hands allows him to flip shots up over length and his touch out to the elbow is solid. Defensively, he relies on his chiseled strength, winner's mentality, and savvy to get deflections in the post and rebound despite his lack of bulk.
Weaknesses:
Butts is an undersized 4-man who isn't overly explosive. Physical defenders can attack his wiry frame and get him off balance while finishing. He needs to continue to improve and extend the range on his jump shot. His shot is a bit flat and his release is a tad mechanical. Going forward he needs to continue to develop his face-up skills (triple threat game) to improve his productivity at the next level.
Bottom Line:
Butts appears to be a solid mid-major recruit due to his mental approach, innate ability to get buckets over length, and motor.

Solid mid-major....... Is that something they would say if he was still committed to Rutgers?
