Not surprising. When was the last time NJ or NY voted for a Republican
for President? GHW Bush? Reagan for sure.
In the words of the immortal Barry Goldwater, "Saw off the Eastern seaboard
and let it float into the Atlantic Ocean."
For that reason, I've avoided talking politics with our coaching staff.

So I actually do agree with Goldwater on something. I wish the northeast could go off on our own.

Rod, I just want to say that you make a lot of the same arguments (NCIS) that my uncle makes for saying why Two and a Half Men is better than Parks and Rec.

I've never watched it because police procedural bore me, but the "Nickelback is the best band in the world because they sell the most albums" argument is not really compelling me to give it a shot.

I think I gave a lot more than its popularity as a reason I watch NCIS.
I watch things I LIKE.
Whatever.

You know, watching stuff you like is a good enough justification. No need to keep repeating how many people watch it.

People love watching Two and a Half Men too, so you must be missing something amongst the fart and boob jokes.

I don't watch ANY sitcoms.
I miss the History Channel being about history and not ugly bearded men
with guns in different shows.
I miss Biography actually having Biographies.
I still haven't figured why The Military Channel carries so many non military related
programs.
I'm happy NCIS is watched by millions every week, because it won't be cancelled anytime soon.

Absolutely awesome book about that - "I Want My MTV." I can't recommend it highly enough, it's an oral history with a ton of great stories.

Homeland's also pretty good, although you have to overlook some serious plot holes and the ridiculousness of the main character.
I don't have cable, so I watch a lot of stuff on Netflix, Hulu, etc.

More recommendations, no order:
House of Cards (spectacular)
The League
Rescue Me
Luther
The Killing
The Walking Dead
Louie
American Horror Story

I tried getting into Mad Men, but nothing ever happens. I keep watching Game of Thrones at night, and subsequently falling asleep. I'm gonna keep trying though!

I've held off on Homeland, just because I heard that with the second season, things kind of go off the rails. I also tend to not be that into shows of that nature - I never really got into 24.

That criticism of Mad Men is fair, I guess. There are long stretches where it seems to be just a character study of Don Draper. But if you stick with it you will be rewarded. When it is good it is really good. I guess it helps to be interested in the characters, too. Roger Sterling is one of my all-time favorites.

TV ratings are so skewed now though. Most people don't watch things on live actual TV anymore.

They do watch sports live, and NCIS beats the NFL, skewed ratings or not.
21.6 million nightly viewers.
Monday Night Football is down to 16th place at 12.9 million viewers!

IMO, that's because the broadcast team (and just the overall coverage) on NBC completely puts ESPN to shame. It's not even close.

Also, of that 25 show listing, I only watch SNF and MNF. I have never seen more than a few seconds of any other show on the list.

This is very true, sports are one of the very few things still watched on TV live.

Also, I was just making more of a general comment, not necessarily against NCIS. Personally I've never seen the show, just not really my type of thing.

On a side note, CBS continues to kill it and NBC continues to struggle with their programming (SNF aside), which tells me everything I need to know about the American public. CBS programming is generally written at an extremely simple level, while NBC programming tends to go over a lot of people's heads. Obviously this isn't universally true and you can see NBC trying to jockey for that middle American demo with dumbed down programming (which is too bad), but it goes to show that the marketplace rewards you playing to the lowest common denominator because dumb people far outweigh smart people. Other than 60 Minutes and NFL football, I don't ever remember turning to CBS on purpose, but yet they dominate the ratings. The success of reality/contest TV, Fox News' domination of the "news" ratings and the aforementioned domination of top-40 music by soulless pop acts tend to evidence the same thing.

TP cut the smug leftist, elitist bullshit.
So NBC rating suck ass, because people "don't get" their MENSA
written crap?
People watch Fox instead of the pile of shit, MSNBC for the same reason?
So. you must be a genius and better than everyone else, because you don't watch CBS or Fox News.
"We're so smart and the great unwashed are just idiots!"
Typical self serving liberal thinking.

Those ratings are based on people who watch TV live, correct? They don't include the +7 ratings?

And also, that's total viewers, not a targeted demographic?

How about Walking Dead at #10! On AMC to boot. Of course I am very familiar with their viewing demographic as i have three 20'ish kids.

Rod, I'm just saying how I feel. I am more likely to watch NBC because I identify with the programming and I think it is smart. I avoid CBS because the programming looks like mostly mindless nonsense to me. That is my impression. You may disagree, but showing me the ratings is the last way you'll convince me I'm wrong. I don't think people are very smart, so I don't really care what they watch.

It isn't limited to NBC, though. FOX, of all networks, had the classic show that didn't survive because it was too smart and nobody watched it (Arrested Development). NBC has had two shows like that (Friday Night Lights and Community), but it kept them on the air even though the ratings weren't good because they recognized the value of the shows. I respect NBC for valuing quality programming and not just ratings, even though I recognize that it isn't good business and a big reason they are consistently #4.

I don't watch Walking Dead - I'm not into "fantasy" stuff, so I don't watch Game of Thrones or True Blood, either - but AMC has two of my favorite shows in Breaking Bad and Mad Men.

Newsroom? When one asshole says,
"I think we're on the verge of our Arab Spring! The
Occupy Wall Street Movement!" Are you fucking kidding me?

American based show, if they paid me.

TP, I think you're giving NBC far too much credit here. They haven't kept Community or Parks and Rec on the air because they believe in the shows - They've kept them on because the network is in freefall, to the point where even the back-up and replacement shows they had were believed to be so bad that they couldn't possibly air them. Like the Dane Cook shock jock sitcom. I like Hannibal quite a bit, but the scripted drama in that slot before it hit an all-time NBC primetime ratings low apparently, and the same with pretty much every show they've tried there since ER.

Plenty of stuff on CBS is broad and stupid - I'm thinking primarily of Two and a Half Men, and while I like it because it's kind of mindless, 2 Broke Girls is basically 22 minutes of 2 Hot Girls saying really crass things. But while I'd call stuff like NCIS and CSI formulaic, that doesn't necessarily mean it's also bad. To try to put it another way - On the other networks, you might get stuff that's a 10 (Hannibal), but you might also get something completely unwatchable (Whitney). CBS, they don't have a ton of 10s, but their shows also don't usually completely suck.

For the Emmys though, I do kind of wish they split it up into network and cable shows. Something like NCIS, which does around 25 episodes a year with more FCC regulations, shouldn't be in the same category as HBO and FX dramas.

I don't watch a ton of network TV, but the ones I find myself gravitating to seem to be on NBC. That is true going all the way back to Seinfeld right through today. Maybe they don't deserve any credit for that, but that doesn't change the fact that I've enjoyed their programming.

being a sales guy; I love Mad Men. I wish I could get hammered at 10am and stare at hot chicks asses and not get dirty looks...aaahhh evolution

That Katie Morgan drop had me rolling; love her. Totally floored when she admitted in one show that she doesn't "keep the change" if you catch my drift.

Breaking Bad actually makes me want to try the crystal meth they created. Superior product; no additives.

Justified is excellent. Sons of Anarchy. The Good Wife. If you are a superhero guy; Arrow is pretty good.

I actively endorse "American Horror Story" especially season 2, Also, anyone who hasn't been following "Game of Thrones" really ought to watch them all from the beginning, in my opinion every aspect of the show is excellent, writing, acting, production, it has replaced MASH and BSG as my all time favorite series.
