If this guy is 6' 10" or 6' 11", he's going to be a nightmare for opposing defenses with the handle & outside shot that I saw in the AAU video. Most guys his size can't handle the ball or shoot from outside like I saw in that video. The guy has a good touch and quick release. I don't think I've seen a guy his height move like that before.

I remember a guy named Lamar who could.
With the same story. Tall guard, 8” growth spurt
, forward with a guards handle. He may never come remotely close to what Odom was, but it’s hard not to draw comparisons! Probably a pipe
Dream, but that’s where my mind goes when I see that video.

You realize Lamar was a Top 10 recruit and Marial is in the 300s. Only one other Top 150 school other than Rhody recruited him. I would bring down the expectations a little. Anyone can get a video of clips made that look good. He has potential. Lamar was a top 10 draft pick after playing one year.

I know Rhody 83, not really expectations! A Major Pipe dream!! I’d be happy with something close to KI ... eventually.

Not to further reinforce what 83 said, but KI was also a Top 30 recruit, and i believe when he was in 9th or 10th grade was even considered a Top 10 prospect. Agree Mading's skill set is intriguing at his size, but anyone can make a highlight video that makes them look like an NBA prospect.

Also the big man with guard skills is much more en vogue now than it was when Lamar came up. Obvi you have Durant, but look at Bol Bol at Oregon who is 7'2" and a prolific 3 pt shooter. Akok Akok the prospect Uconn is looking at has that skill set. Heck Ant Walker who we were all over has that skill set. It's much much more common, likely due to guys like Lamar, KD, etc. These kids grew up watching them and emulating their games. Similar to how you are seeing guards come through who clearly are emulating Steph Curry's game, ie Trae Young, Grady.

Based on what I saw from KI here I would
Have to say he was a very good player , but a top 10-30 talent. NOT! To me that talent level are eventual NBA draft pics and KI was clearly not that. Also I am sure KI started playing ball as soon as he could hold one and I thought I read that Marial has only been playing a few years.
I think his build has a lot of people concerned and rightfully so. But his upside seems extremely high. Who knows if he will ever get there. Only time will tell. A person can dream, right!

He may not be the next Lamar Odom but he's not the next Marcel Momplasir either. He definitely has skills that play at this level.

Yes, I have, and I love the kid. Can we allow him to suit up first?

DC you are also reckless jake? Two accounts? I asked reckless if he had seen Marial play a full game.

I have seen him play against lower level AAU competition. He has potential. To state that he “definitely” has the ability to play at the higher end of college D1 at this point is misguided. He is an unknown. I look forward to seeing him play a lot this year (I live near his school).

Lol, you know I’m not Jake, but I answered because I feel as though you are baiting people to say nothing but negative things about the kid. I get the fact that your not a big fan, but at this point, let’s see how his Sr. Year pans out.

They have lost all three of their games. No box scores on their site. Their game Thurs was postponed because of the snow.
I live near Springfield so we get to plenty of his games this year.

Mading first half stats:

3FG 1-3
Reb 3
Ast 3
Steals 2
Blocks 2
TO 1

Mading full game:

13 points
2FG 5-10
3FG 1-7
Total FG 6-17
Reb 5
Ast 4
Steals 2
Blocks 2
TO 3

Team lost by about 20
He is a perimeter player. Had his shot blocked three times underneath.

I have no idea why he picked this school. They aren’t good. Coach isn’t good. There are HS in WMass that are better.
The team went 4-24 FTs. They committed about 35 fouls.

Comparing Mading to Dana Tate at this point last year I would put Tate significantly ahead of Mading.
Mading has potential.

He’d also be better around better players. Sounds like he has to do more than is expected for his team to compete.

I saw the live stream and agree with most of what 83 said. His team ran the offense like it was on the playground, I don't think I saw one set play which makes it tough to see what he could do, with most of the supporting cast not what you would expect of a prep team. His strengths are ball handling, vision and ability to get to the rim, especially given his height. On defense he was guarding their guards, but seemed a bit lost and a non factor, and generally lacked aggressiveness. Why he wasn't playing in the paint on def also illustrates how bad their coaching is. The good news is they play very good prep teams, so there won't be a lack of competition. He's definitely a project and it will probably take him a year or two to get adjusted to Division 1, but you can see the tools, making the ceiling pretty high.

The team they played tonight is not a top prep team in the area. Mading started by covering their post player. He isn’t a post defender. I would say he was the 4th or 5th best player in the game. Three best players were on WMA. The top player has committed to Harvard. The second best player is being recruited by BU. The other two players aren’t being recruited by D1 schools to my knowledge.

Sounds like a serious project. And with his athletic frame and perimeter skill set, either our staff sees something no one else did in terms of ceiling or this is a potential whiff. Just his size should have attracted bigger suitors.

Good stats. They aren’t all correct. I kept stats just on Mading during the game. I missed the first minute of play so it is possible he hit a three that I missed. The score was 3-2 when I sat down. I am very confident in the Rebs, Ast etc. There is no way he had 11 rebounds. He had 5.

Based on Cox comments on his radio show this week, It seems that Mading will not really get playing time as a Freshmen. Cox talked about his unique skill & size and the need to develop. I believe his comments where around Mading having the potential to develop into a special player in two years.

To be fair to both Mading and Long, the rotation is going to be pretty tough to crack next year assuming CT is back with the addition of Walker.
