I was looking for info on Jeff Newberry and saw that former Rhody great Tayshawn Mabry is ranked as the #83 JUCO player in the country coming out of Modesto CC in California, and has not committed to a school as of yet.

TruePoint, maybe this listing has something to do with Mabry not committed to go to a "school." Maybe, it's somewhere else, if you catch my drift…..

Will be playing for a D2, Tarleton State. They were in the D2 NCAA tourny last year (I think...)

Sad, sad situation for Lamar. There is an update at the bottom of the article that says a source close to Lamar claims he is not missing. But regardless, this is not a good look for him. Rhody should keep him in our thoughts and hope he gets it together.

Lamar isn't a bad guy and supports half the world, with all his hanger on.
He just has an addiction that he's fought for over a decade.

I can find little info since my aug 25 post.. WVU in full football mode. However, other player mentioned, Macon is reported to be on the teams roster. Holton not on it, nor mentioned.

Sounds something like a leopard doesn't change his spots. I guess the sponge is dry.

If Holton isn't at WVU, I think it is more likely that he wasn't cleared rather than that he flaked on showing up.

My recollection was that Mabry had some serious brush with the law while in high school; it was resolved and he was admitted to URI. Then, he had some brush-up with URI players because he acted like the future star of the team. (We all know that seniority mattered during the baron years.) He then left after the first day of classes, tying up a scholarship. Do I have it right? What problems has he had after leaving URI?

Thanks for posting, good to hear that Jonathan will be able to suit up this year. Interesting that the article talks about Aaric Murray who had transferred in from LaSalle, but does NOT indicate that Murray has left the West Virginia Program as of mid July. Murray has one more year of eligibility and can play right away - but there were problems at WVA.
Holton is set to be the man down low this year and get a ton of playing time.

Jonathan shot 41-103 for 39.8% on 3 pointers last year. He was 27-56 for 48.2% on 3 pointers in Conference Play.
Jonathan led the NCACC with 13.9 rebounds per game, 15.2 rebounds per game in conference play
He averaged 17.4 points per game.
Having watched every home game and several away games his Freshman year it was obvious he could shoot the 3, did not have a high percentage in the games but then he was a freshman too
I know the majority on the board did not think he could shoot, but watching warmups you could tell............his 40% last year showed that.
It is a rare combination to be able to lead the country in rebounding in NJACC or lead the Atlantic 10 in Offensive Rebounding as only a Freshman and be able to respectably shoot from outside as well. How many great rebounders can also shoot from outside.........
I wish him well at West Virginia - a shame it did not work out at URI.

I think I want my best rebounder, especially if he is considered to be an outstanding rebounder, to be a little closer to the basket than 20 feet or so.

Maybe the best thing for him. He won't do serious time for a DUI, but hopefully they held him for long enough to detox him and let him get his composure.

I was under the impression that it is whether or not he was in good academic standing when he left the school. This accounts for guys leaving early for the NBA or transferring. Maybe there is a catch-up clause if he graduates (if, in fact, he was in bad shape when he left URI).

yes, that was a frequent statement made on our boards during Holton's Freshman year.........don't take 3's and stay under the basket.
What I liked about Holton's game was his Rebounding ability first and foremost, especially on the offensive end. Not surprised that Holton is being called a rebounding machine by guys who have seen his workouts at WVU. The guy can flat out rebound and keeps balls alive as good as I've ever seen. The other part of his game I liked was his fluid ability to run the floor. He was gazelle-like. He ran well, passed well and caught the ball well. Larry Bird was a great rebounder, especially offensively, but took outside shots. Orion Outerbridge ran well, took outside shots but often did fade-a-ways and did not rebound as well as he was capable of.
Holton led the A10 in Offensive Rebounding as a Freshman, he led the Nation last year in Rebounding with 14 per game. He also shot 40% from 3 point land last year. So would playing inside make him a better, more productive player? I am not so sure. First off he hit 40% on 3's so only 60% of those shots are "reboundable". The shooter knows more likely where the miss is going to go so he is so quick to move towards the ball maybe that helps him. He is also having his man have to guard him out at the 3 point line so he has a rebounding advantage versus his man if he can beat him to the ball - and he is so quick for his size and a very quick jumper.

Holton has a ton of raw talent. Have to give Baron and Murphy credit for landing him for Rhody. Baron may not have been the best guy to help corral and develop that raw talent. Huggins is a tough guy. He takes no nonsense as the recent release of former LaSalle star Aaric Murray demonstrates. Huggins will be tough on Holton, he has always exhibited a tough love type of coaching style. Huggins is also a common sense type of guy knowing that kids will make mistakes and is showing that here giving this kid a second chance.
Certainly what Holton did was not right, but one has to wonder if Baron was too trusting, gave too long a leash and too much freedom to his players. A guy like Holton needed a Mentor (like he had in HS) and needed "tough love" as Bobby Huggins is known for providing throughout his Coaching career.
It will be very interesting to watch. I think Holton is in the right place and could very likely be in the NBA before too long. A shame it turned out to be a lose-lose for the Holton-URI pairing.
Too bad Hurley did not get a chance to Coach Jonathan....that would have been most interesting. The timing just was not right.

Huggins and Holton are two peas in a pod. Huggy bear; who graduated 30% of his scholarship players in his tenure at Cincy. Add in the criminal behavior of his players and his DUI; Holton will fit right in.

Who cares about Jonathan Holton?
He doesn't play here, and he's got problems.
All he wanted to do was shoot 30 footers like
Kevin Durant and Dirk.
He must've thought that was the road to the NBA.
Plus, he had a coach, who did nothing to stop this.
