I don’t think you pay Cal for his tactical acumen. I don’t think of him as being a dummy, but the reason he’s there is because of the players he brings in. If they fired Cal because they wanted better Xs and Os, they would literally make it one recruiting cycle before they were calling for the next guy to be fired.
I do wonder if we're getting close to a breaking point with Cal, though. Another board I'm on, a poster pointed out that it's been 7 or 8 years since a Final Four for him. He can win if he has *overwhelming* talent, but we saw this year that he had to play Obi Toppin major minutes - a nice player in the A-10, but not exactly a five-star NBA-style recruit. I think most other major programs are much more comfortable recruiting one-and-done guys, even Gonzaga. It's definitely a First World Problem among college basketball programs, but Kentucky might need more of a tactician, since they're among the bluest of bloods, that's probably going to be able to recruit proper talent most years anyway.

Combination of that and Loyola isn’t nearly as good as they were in the past. They had many games they were lucky to win this year.

What can you guys tell me about Richmond? Based on the little I know of them, seems like they are kind of a mirror image of PC in terms of talent and experience this year.

How well did they handle the Mitchells’ size?

IMHO Richmond does not beat themselves but if you play well you should beat them.

I think PC lucked out getting to play Richmond. Yes they are "peaking", but they finished 7th in the A10 regular season and have now won 6 in a row.

Richmond will run out of steam I'm guessing. Which sucks of course.

Grant Golden is also a hot headed crybaby. Things don't go his way and he quickly starts raising his arms at the refs and can get taken out of the game mentally.

Langevine used to give him fits. He doesn't do well with physical post defenders

Chattanooga vs Illinois was great game. Illinois led only the last 30 seconds of the game and pulled it out.

Davidson leads Michigan State 52-49 with 10 minutes to go.

Interesting note Foster Loyer was the Team Captain at Michigan State and now he is Team Captain at Davidson - playing his former team in the NCAA Tournament. Hell of a game right now. Well played by both teams.

Yup. Not an offensive foul. The idea of replay is to get the call right!

Plus two quick whistles at least one was a clear turnover and not a foul. If only these refs were there in 98 when the entire world knew Mobley was being purposely fouled except the refs on the court.

Some here have never liked Golden.

Here are the 6 games Golden has played vs URI in his 5 year career at Richmond. Richmond has won the last 4.

Golden has reduced his turnovers since his 1st two years and improved his FG% his last 3 years.

He is good for about 16 ppg and 9 rebounds per game.

Jan 25, 2022: Richmond won 70-63
Golden 26 min, 15P / 9R, 3 assists, 1 TO, 6-12 FG, 2-4 3FG, 1-1 FT

Mar 10, 2022: Richmond won 64-59
Golden 28 min, 19P / 3R, 1 assist, 2 TO, 6-12 FG, 7-10 FT

Jan 6, 2021: Richmond won 80-73
Golden 34 min, 17P / 9R, 5 assists, 0 TO, 8-15 FG, 1-2 FT

Jan 5, 2020: Richmond won 69-61
Golden 27 min, 10P / 9R, 5 assists, 2 TO, 5-16 FG, 0-1 FT

Jan 9, 2019: URI won 78-67
Golden 37 min, 17P / 8R, 6 assists, 4 TO, 8-13 FG, 1-5 FT

Feb 13, 2018: URI won 85-67
Golden 35 min, 16P / 7R, 1 assists, 8 TO, 6-16 FG, 4-4 FT

They’re kind of, in my mind, in the same situation.

Richmond has been so hot, and we’re kind of waiting for them to come back to earth.

PC has gotten every break and everything go their way, and we’re waiting for the law of averages to come into play.

Go Spiders.

I think Richmond’s luck runs out today. PC should be too physical for them. Iowa is more of a finesse team and was a much better matchup. PC wears em down and eventually comes out on top IMO.

If they do they will have gone through the juggernaut of SDSU and the 6th place finisher in the A10. Doesn’t get much easier on paper.

Ref ball taking over.... Baylor clawing back in after a F2 foul disqualifying Manek from the game, then a "double foul" that should have gone against Baylor and be an F1. While Manek's foul was def a foul, I think more of a F1 - between a regular foul and an F2. But it was an elbow to the face, so I'm kind of torn and don't know the rules enough. Momentum changer.

Now, they changed it to a T on Bacot so 2 fouls on the play for a total of 4? I feel Souchan (sp?) is an instigator. Ridiculous. Lead down 14.

UNC got a clear break at 2:02 left in OT when the ball clearly went off a UNC player but they kept possession, and Baylor was fouled shooting a 3 with a few seconds left.

So Baylor did not all the breaks down the stretch.
