Talk about balancing off the classes. With the two recent commitments, we now have 3 freshmen, 3 sophomores, 3 juniors and 3 seniors.

I highly doubt we use our last scholly on a backup PG. Four can do spot duty at PG, and with our plethora of guards we should be fine in that dept.

Agreed. If they use the last one, my guess it will be another big, either transfer or 5th year.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Four, EC and Terrell, all have negative assisits to
turmover ratios.
Four has played 3 years and has a negative for his career.
I'd hate to think of what would happen if Jarvis goes down for
any length of time.
The lack of a backup PG could ruin your season.
Some of us have seen that happen at URI in the past.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Rod, I doubt we're going to get a one or two year guy in here just to back up Jarvis. Good luck with that.
Our best shot lies with getting a 4 year for 2016.
This is going to require taking a chance with what we've got now as backups, but I think that's what will happen.
In any event, JG is by far our best at the position, have to keep our fingers and toes crossed.
The two guys imo we can't afford to lose, and hope to Dance, are Jarvis and Hassan.....

I'd take Terrance Samuel, as a transfer, too.
If somehow a 5th year PG pops up, that
would be the best thing.
Scholarship comes back for 2016 recruiting.
Without one, it puts an awful lot of pressure on Jarvis
to play maximum minutes, ala Bryce Cotton.
Something not all players can do.

Thompson will be your backup point guard to Jarvis......played the 1 and 2 this past year.....no way we are taking on any more guards.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Thompson was his teams point guard. Not lead guard point guard but the actual.
Still every guy comes to the team thinking they have pg potential. We've seen that not work out well. I think Thompson has more of that in his game than EC and JT.

Not sure any 5th year PG worth anything would want to come to URI for 8-10 minutes a game of spot duty.

That's actually a very good point.

That's my concern, too. Didn't know that Thompson played point. Maybe that's the plan. I'm not comfortable with our other guards doing it.bigappleram wrote:Not sure any 5th year PG worth anything would want to come to URI for 8-10 minutes a game of spot duty.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
I think they have enough secondary ballhandler options on the team - Mathews, Four, Thompson, Iverson, Terrell - that they can probably cobble together for the 5 to 15 minutes Garrett won't play. It probably would be better if they recruited another "pure" point, or if Biggie had stayed, but I also imagine it's probably tougher to recruit at that position when a kid sees Garrett entrenched there.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
I think we all agree that we can cobble together 7-15 min a game from the guys we have, but I think the point Rod is trying to make, is what happens if Jarvis gets hurt or in foul trouble, etc...then we may have an issue.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Okay, say Garrett gets hurt and misses the season. If Minnis was still here he would play 25-30 minutes. Or incoming freshman point guard recruit X, Y, or Z is forced to play 25-30 minutes.RIFan wrote:I think we all agree that we can cobble together 7-15 min a game from the guys we have, but I think the point Rod is trying to make, is what happens if Jarvis gets hurt or in foul trouble, etc...then we may have an issue.
In either case, URI's NCAA chances would be negatively affected. Same as if Martin goes down...or Matthews goes down....you get the point. Dealing in such hypotheticals isn't productive.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Oh, definitely. But I think it's tougher to recruit when you're trying to account for contingencies and can't promise consistent minutes. It's one thing if you're just stockpiling wings and combo guards, since they probably figure, "Oh, I can get minutes at the 2, 3 and 4." Probably tougher if you're a '15 point guard, and you see Jarvis Garrett there. (That being said, it wouldn't surprise me if the final scholarship goes to a pass-first point guard.)RIFan wrote:I think we all agree that we can cobble together 7-15 min a game from the guys we have, but I think the point Rod is trying to make, is what happens if Jarvis gets hurt or in foul trouble, etc...then we may have an issue.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
I don't think it is wrong to say that backup PG could be a soft spot on our roster and we'd be in trouble if we lost Jarvis. But if your starting PG goes down for the season that does not bode well, anyways. I think I'd rather roll the dice with what we have now and use the scholarship to bring in a better player in '16 than whoever they would be able to bring in at this point that would be willing to sit behind Jarvis for three years if he doesn't get injured.

Oh, something Dan told me that I forgot to
relay.
It seems that athletics can no longer use URI's
Talent Development program to get athletes in without
having them count towards scholarships.
Interesting, because that was something used
previously by various programs to circumvent the numbers.

Interesting .... number of names I haven't seen before. Forgive my ignorance, but what does "Interest" mean in this context? For example, is it the player's interest or the school's interest that is cool, warm, etc.? I presume "High Choice" means it's a priority recruit for the school while "Interested" means the school is interested and "Scout Look" means the school is just checking the player out.bressler3south wrote:Just an updated, facts-only recruiting list of URI "targets" from 24/7, complete with competing schools.

Seems like Cox has been doing work. Out of the 23 players they have us listed with you have 4 from Maryland, 3 from Pennsylvania, and 2 from Virginia.

I've always loved that logo. I wish they'd would use that as the primary instead of the RI. nothing wrong with the current one, but the Ram head is just awesome.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
At some point in the last few years we talked this subject extensively. I am a HUGE fan of the Ram head logo, but I also see the school/athletic dept's point in going with the interlocking RI for branding purposes. The Ram head should definitely still be used internally when possible because it is great looking.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
The RI is way better. I just always hate solid-colored logos. Nobody from outside of RI knows what that is, plus it looks too much like the VCU rams logo. Always should have thought that the old Rams logo on the old court design should have been Keaney blue, not some weird, faded, tan color.

Thanks for passing this list on. Don't know how accurate it is though. Would be VERY surprised if we land Markelle Fultz. A new name I heard recently was Nate Watson a 2017 guy who plays for DC Thunder. He fits Rod's mold- 6'8 230

Good catch Bressler. I believe he is actually at Capital Christian, although I am not 100%.
With Fultz, he has really blown up. Schools like Kentucky and Louisville have recently gotten involved.
At 6'4, Carr has great size. With EC, Jared and Robinson it appears that Hurley may like a guard with a little bit more size.

It appears that PC is attempting to get involved with the Greek player that Rod and I were discussing earlier.
"The Friars may also try to get involved with a top foreign player, namely Greek center Georgios Papagiannis. He played last year for a high school in Pennsylvania before returning to Greece this past season to compete with a professional team but the 7-1 big man still has his amateur status and needs additional seasoning before aiming for the NBA.
