Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
I remember after his first year, asking Dan if he was going to send Hare
to a big man camp.
He said,"No, we'll do everything here during the summer."
I think getting a guy like ARD would have gone very far in
being able to recruit and teach bigs.
He applied, but it didn't happen.

Well, we'll see soon enough if Dan's "I always get what I want" comment holds true, when it comes to getting any good bigs in here.
Not just for next season, but for 2016.
Failure to land any, will make it obvious that Dan has to make some staff changes, imo.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
True.
I have to say, in talking to plenty of people last night,
lots of grumbling about seeming inability to recruit
size.
So, those of us who feel the same, know that we're not the
only ones.
Funny thing is, all the other pieces are in place. With a decent big or
two, we'd be a lock for a top 25 next year.
Another thing heard was, Koon wanted to come here, but staff
decided that they wanted Iverson to get the bulk of the time at
what looks like the stretch 4.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
I would also think that Dan is aware of the fan base's concern about the recruiting issues.
I'm sure he's heard it from many people. He needs to prove us all wrong.
I don't doubt that Dan will bring in someone next month. However, I hope it's not of the "dumpster diving" variety.
We need QUALITY size. Not just size for it's own sake. That won't help us much.

http://www.providencejournal.com/articl ... S/?Start=2Hurley, staff hit recruiting trail
Armed with three open scholarships for the upcoming season and as many as six for 2016-17, Hurley and his staff spent last weekend’s evaluation period living out of their suitcases. Several showcase events — three within driving distance of one another in Louisville, Lexington and Indianapolis — gave hoards of coaches a chance to get a good look at potential prospects.
“We needed every one of those evaluation days and recruiting days to be out,” Hurley said. “It’s been a pretty intense couple of weeks for us.”
Hurley said URI is still weighing potential replacements for Biggie Minnis, Jarelle Reischel and Matthew Butler, each of whom have been granted a release from the program and permission to seek opportunities elsewhere. The Rams are targeting frontcourt help for Hassan Martin, Earl Watson and Ifeanyi Onyekaba and some size on the perimeter.
“You’ve got to get the proper fit for what we need,” Hurley said. “We have very specific needs right now. We’re not building a fantasy basketball team. You’re putting together an actual basketball team.”

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
If they really did not want Koon and Wily, they must be pretty confident that they have something else that makes sense for them.
So maybe we are missing the boat by just looking at JUCO and transfers and still available 2015's- maybe it is a 16 that is reclassifying to 15. Maybe Tyrique Jones?????
Maybe someone that is not on anyone's public radar screen yet.

Dream on.
Judging from the schools chasing Wily,
he probably scratched us off his list.
Imagine having a stiff give your program the bird?

That's fine, but what is the reasoning behind this? Normally, visits from a recruit to a college isn't kept a secret.TruePoint wrote:You don't know by designrambone 78 wrote:Well, supposedly there are 3 recruits visiting this weekend.

Usually, the recruit or his parents/guardians/high school coach/AAU coach will tweet about a visit or upcoming visit. Maybe, secrecy is the key to shocking the college basketball world on Monday.TruePoint wrote:You don't know by designrambone 78 wrote:Well, supposedly there are 3 recruits visiting this weekend.

I haven't heard that. I do know everyone will be at

which is usually when visits begin.

I don't mean to make it seem like the staff is expending more energy keeping recruiting quiet than they are recruiting. But they are recruiting. They obviously aren't interested in leveraging the media in their efforts.

It's that stealth recruiting thing again.
I don't know what it accomplishes, but if it works, why not?
IF it works, that's the thing.....
You would think, that if it's true about 3 coming, that they are connected somehow.
More than one visiting at the same time is very unusual, to say the least.

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
I think initially when the Hurley took over a dormant URI program there was a need to use the media regarding visits in order to create a buzz around the program and help sell it to recruits. Now that Hurley is 3 years in and has the program trending upwards and the core four in place there is less of a need to feed the media recruiting news.
There isn't much to gain from publicizing visits at this point unless the staff is bringing in a well known/highly touted guy. In fact publicizing lesser known players visits can definitely backfire, especially if they don't land the player. People begin to question why URI wasn't able to close on that player and then other recruits at that position could perceive themselves as a fall back option for the staff.
That, or maybe Hurley just reads this board and gets a kick out of watching posters squirm and the sports talk-radio mentality that goes along with posting on this board. Every day the sky is falling for a new reason.

Dan does not read this board.
There are people in the Athletic Dept. that do.
As far as Twitter, players, their coaches at high school, or
AAU get the word out, because it boosts them up and gets
their name out there.
Even if URI doesn't get Zags to say something, those others
are all too willing to do so.
I had a coaching staff member come by my house tonight and he said
they are working night and day to get what's needed.

They are certainly working their butts off on the recruiting trail.
There's no doubt about that. That cannot be questioned.
Just hope it pays off. With the lack of info coming out, it just makes things tougher on a lot of us.
Maybe it's the calm before the storm....in a good way of course....

Re: General Recruiting Discussion/Comments
Its worth noting that we have had 1 great back-to-the basket, dominant big in my 30 years of watching URI. 1. Kenny Green (and he wasnt even a center). Besides that we have had a few decent-to-good Centers and a bunch of undersized forwards. I am not sure it has been easy for any Coach to recruit bigs to URI.

No, I was surprised that they didn't want to wait
until Saturday to get them back.
Must have felt I'd be selling the awards on Ebay or something.
The only dinner was almost our visitor. Since he came unannounced,
(Mike Laprey had sent me an email, that I read too late, asking to pick up
the trophies) we didn't have Arthur locked up. I don't need any lawsuits.
So, large Arthur was trying to barge through me, at the door, to eat our visitor.
Total chaos for a minute or so.
After Arthur got put in his cage, order was restored.
In retrospect, I probably should have left them at Quidnessett.

His crate could fit a lion, I think.
At his peak, his head was 28" around.
DDBs have the hardest bite in the dog world, approaching the
lion's bite, so it's good that they are usually gentle.
Arthur doesn't like strangers or bicycle riders,
unlike my late Dogue Napoleon, who I used to walk to
my daughter's elementary school. He would he surrounded by
kids, and loving it.

I could see one of the random guys we grab being David Pekarek of the Czech Republic. He played at the NPSI at RIC earlier this year and was voted as NetScouts player of the game in his day 4 matchup. Looks to be a Nikola Malesevic clone - tall shooter with some decent scoring ability. No mention of us being involved other than him following Jim Carr and Jim Carr following him on twitter. Not much on this kid...could be because hes international or could be because there aren't many interested. Just throwing it out there...

OK, this rumor of 3 people coming this weekend is starting to make sense. Putting 2 and 2 together, Dan, Luke and a UMass assistant were at Vermont Academy 2 weeks ago. I'll bet while they were there, visits were set up at both UMass and URI. UMass just happened. We're next. We'll see if my hunch is right.

@CoachAPopp Great hosting Danny Hurley (URI), Luke Murray (URI), Andy Alison (UMass), and Mike Martin (Brown) in the last 24 hours.
I think Martin and Brown are recruiting Fisher.

It would be unusual for 3 recruits from 3 different schools to visit on the same day. It would not be unusual for 3 Vt. Academy kids to unofficially visit on the same day.
