Jersey,

While I don't necessarily share your pessimism, I do share your enthusiasm for the women's program. I hope you will continue to do these capsule previews as the season takes hold. It gives first timers and newbies a chance to have some knowledge of the opposition and is informative even for those of us that are a bit more engaged with the program. Thanks for your dedication.

Thanks CD,

Actually, I am very optimistic about our program's future under Tammi.
I just felt this season because of all the new faces we may fall back a little.
4 of our 5 starters may consist of our new transfers, that may not necessarily be a bad thing.

Hopefully they all mesh quickly, and we can finish in the top 3.

Listening to Tammi, I think she said Tenin Magassa is injured and currently out.

Hopefully I am mistaken because she is a major part of this team.

On a positive note, starting big Maye' Toure' scored 27 pts (11-14 FG).

I had planned to go, but was feeling like I was coming down with something so stayed home and flipped between both games. Not a good night for either team.

Our next game is Friday at home against Dartmouth.
That team struggled last season 3-23 (2-12 Ivy)

This is a game we should easily win and blow open.

They are a veteran team and basically return all their starters.
No real standouts from last season, all the players averaged between 4-7 pts.

They lost the first game of the season Monday against Bryant 63-70.
Leading scorers for them was Page (16 pts), Koch (12 pts), Boyd (11 pts), and Lawlor (10 pts).

Providence should be a good test for us today at the RC.

They did struggle last season in the BE, but are now 2-0, including a victory over last season's A10 regular season champ Dayton.

Providence returns their star player and preseason All-BE pick Crooms.
So far she is averaging 14.5 pts/6 rebs.

Transfer from Florida, Farrell is averaging 11 pts/4.5 rebs.
Their big Olsen (6'3") is averaging 14 pts/6 rebs.
Also, starter Efosa averages 7 pts/5 rebs.

Not sure if another starter for them and returning player Sheppard (9.6 pts last season) will be available.

Solid win good show, Tammi knows what she’s doing and she’s really bringing in (and developing) legit D1 talent. Toure especially solid now.

$10 need more folks in the seats. Deserving of big time support.

1,065 in attendance witnessed a great, come from behind win by URI.
So impressed by freshman Anaelle Dutat. She had a game high 14 rebounds. An amazing 8 offensive rebounds. URI had a total of 13 offensive rebounds and PC had 8 total offensive rebounds.

Tammy had Dutat covering PC’s top player, Janai Crooms in the 2nd half. Crooms is from Cranston, played 2 years at Ohio State, 1 year at Michigan State and now her 2nd year at pC. Dutat played tough defense on Crooms, making her earn everything she got.

Dutat has great anticipation for rebounding being in the right place at the right time, she has excellent hands and is an excellent defensive player.

Dutat will be fun to watch all season as Tammy clearly has a ton of faith in Anaelle - putting Anaelle on Janai Crooms showed the faithTammi has in her.

My guess is Anaelle earned a starting spot with tonight’s performance. I hope so.

Croons was 11/16 with 24 points and was by far the best player on the floor. Got slowed down by getting whacked in the forehead by the basketball - going to the locker room briefly for what I assume was protocol. She’s a strong player along with Efosa provided Tammi’s Rams some matchup nightmares.

Agreed PeteRI. When we went down by 13 and PC was hitting so many 3 Point Shots I was concerned but a gutsy group of players and a great coaching staff never gave up, dug down deep and turned it around. Great game. Friar fans who made the trip sitting behjnd the PC bench were sullen and stunned following the game.

From GoRhody.com:

Inside the Box Score
  • Rhode Island had a big advantage in points off turnovers, scoring 24 points off of 18 Friar turnovers.
  • By comparison, Providence had 12 points off just 10 URI turnovers.
Junior Maye Toure led the Rams with 16 points to go with five rebounds and two steals.
  • Freshman Anaelle Dutat had a major impact, grabbing 14 rebounds in 30 minutes off the bench. She added four points, three assists and two steals.
  • She led the team with a plus-minus of +14.
  • Junior Dolly Cairns and graduate student Madison Hattix-Covington each had 13 points for Rhode Island.
  • Graduate student Emma Squires had eight points while fellow graduate transfer Sayawni Lassiter added seven points and six assists.
  • Providence shot 72 percent from the floor in the opening half, making 21-of-29 from the floor. Rhode Island limited the guests to 8-for-21 from the floor after the break.
  • The Friars outrebounded Rhode Island 17-11 in the first half, but URI had a 21-16 edge in the final 20 minutes.

From Bill Koch twitter….

Reiss on Anaelle Dutat (7 points, 14 rebounds) -- 'She led FIBA in rebounding. There's a reason we brought her here.'

'That's something we haven't had in a while -- her ability.'

'We call her the Dennis Rodman.....that's her role.' #URI

Couldn’t agree more. I thought Of the Dennis Rodman comparison while watching last nights game.

I found my eyes glued to Dutat the entire 2nd half as she was assigned to Crooms on defense and Crooms was assigned Dutat when URI had the ball. Dutat, a true Freshman, matched up with 5th year Janai Crooms in the 2nd half was fun to watch.

Next game is Tuesday against Coppin State.
They finished respectable (9-5) in the MEAC last season.
They are 1-3 this year, but a tough schedule.

They return a veteran team and some talent.
Jaia Alexander the best player in the conference MEAC POY and leading scorer 15.5 pts, hasn't played yet this season.

Other players of note:
Staples- All MEAC last season, leading scorer this season
Watkins- MEAC All Rookie Team, averaging 10.5 pts this season
Hamilton - Started every game last season
Salley - Starting center at 6'4", leading rebounder last season.

Not sure the situation with their best player Alexander.
Last season she had 23 pts/10 rebs against us, but we beat them by almost 30 pts.

We should win this game at home by double digits.

Lady Rams showed a lot of grit to pull out a win over a tough opponent. The usual suspects got it done with really balanced scoring - four starters in double digits. Toure and Dutat both had 10 rebounds, while good ball movement led to 16 assists on 25 buckets. Now down to Florida for some sun, fun and wins!

Next up is Southeast Mo. State or SEMO in Florida.

Last season they struggled in the OVC only winning 2 games.

This season so far, they are 2-2.
They are led by Watkins (wing) and Henderson (G) both averaging double-digits.
Also guard Bussard averaging about 8 pts.
They do lack size, impact bigs.

This is a game we should win easily but anything can happen away from home.

Rhode Island is beating Southeast Missouri State 30-26 at the half at UCF's Tournament down in Orlando. It seems the only way to watch or listen to the game today and the one tomorrow at noon against Samford is on the Varsity app. As bad as the app is, and it is dumpster juice, full marks for now sending URI students to away women's basketball games to provide an audio broadcast.

This weekend the Friars are hosting what they call the Friar Thanksgiving Classic at Alumni Hall. Hartford, Weber State, and Bryant are the other three schools participating. No idea on if we weren't invited or we turned them down to play in the Central Florida tournament

After trailing by 6 at the half, the Lady Rams storm back with a 17-7 third quarter, and go +8 in the fourth quarter as well, to beat Samford 75-63. Toure leads URI with 14, but Squires chipped in 12 in 19 minutes, and seven players had six points or more. Lassiter had four steals to lead the URI defensive effort.

Next up is Buffalo.
Last season they had much success winning 25 games, the MAC title, and an NCAAT bid.
Coach Legette-Jack moved on to Syracuse and Becky Burke was hired.
Coach Jack took 4 players with her including top 2 scorers Fair (23.4 pts) and Woolley (14.6 pts).
Plus, McEvans a MAC FOY and Wilson a freshman last season.

Burke basically had to rebuild the entire roster with mostly transfers and a couple of freshmen.
Leading the way for them is Winfield (13.5 pts/10 rebs), Young (10 pts), and Stone (8 pts/6 rebs).

We should get a win here pretty easily at home.

Rhody takes on Maine at home Sunday.
Maine is currently 3-5 but a very difficult schedule to date.

Coach Amy Vachon has been very successful, 4x AEC COY.
They are also coming off a reg season title 21-22 (15-3 conference)
They also return 3 starters from that team.

Anne Simon is the leader and top player in the conference.
2022 AEC POY, 2x First Team AEC
Currently averaging 12 pts.

Other players of note:
Smith - Averaging 9.5 points/ 8 rebs.
Bornemann - Averaging 9 points
Rockwood is averaging 8.5 pts and Hodgson 7 pts.
Gallego - Last season All Rookie AEC Team is averaging 5 pts.

Look for another win at home here but could be close.

Commanding win by Rhody 63-43, thought this may have been closer.
After the first game loss, nice winning streak of 7 games.
