Last year we split with UMASS 1-1
Starters Game 1:
Samba Diallo - Freshman
Djery Baptiste - Grad Transfer from Vanderbilt with a second Grad Transfer year still remaining
Carl Pierre - Soph
Keon Clergeot - Soph
Luwane Pipkins - Senior

Starters Game 2:
Same starters except Sy Chatman - Freshman - who started for Diallo who was hurt

So UMASS has all 6 players who started back from those 2 URI games, except for Pipkins, who they knew in advance that he was leaving for his Grad Year

UMASS has the top ranked recruiting class in the A10 and ranked #48 Nationally
Tre Mitchell, from Woodstock Academy, was Ranked #72 ESPN and the only Top 100 ESPN player in the A10 Class of 2019
Mitchell was only 1 of 2 Four Star recruits for the A10 in 2019 class, Davidson getting the other one.
The Woodstock Academy HC joined UMASS as an assistant. His Woodstock team had 11 players go to Division 1 schools this year.

Will be interesting to watch UMASS this season.

They definitely have the potential to be very good in a couple of years,

The question is, can McCall coach them up?

If he flops I could see UMass dumping him and replacing him with the assistant from Woodstock.

Listed among “5 Names tonImpact Nationally”

TRE MITCHELL, UMass: A rare top-100 recruit for the Atlantic 10, the 6-foot-9 Mitchell should be one of the league’s better post players as head coach Matt McCall looks to get the program back on track. A gifted offensive weapon who can score in the post or also face up with the jumper, Mitchell will be a major piece for the Minutemen to build with this season. A potential four-year player, Mitchell isn’t an elite athlete. But he should command some double teams and give UMass an immediate credible threat in the post.

Tyrone started out playing for Pilgrim HS but since transferred to Hendricken

Last night Hendricken defeated Cranston East (70-64) with Weeks going off for 39 points and he hit 17-18 Free Throws.
He's good, but undersized for a big. I'm not sure how well his game will translate to the college game. Then again, I thought the same thing about Bonzie Jr.
Warwick’s TJ Weeks, a Freshman at UMASS, scored a game high 18 points tonight in an exh game with Western New England
Weeks played 22 minutes and was 5-10 FG, 4-6 on 3FG and 4-5 FTs.
Weeks also had:
2 rebounds
2 assists
1 TO
1 block
2 steals

Weeks played 2 years at Pilgrim and 2 years at Hendricken.
His dad, Tyrone Weeks SR played at UMASS scoring over 1000 points and he was an assistant coach at URI

Freshman Preston Santos, also from Rhode Island and Hendricken HS played well in his 10 minutes of action.

Yes he did prep a year. It did help him. But I saw him at Pilgrim when he was a freshman and also at Hendricken and he had a nice touch then too. Always a good FT shooter.

He played a year at Woodstock Academy. UMass hired the Woodstock coach Tony Bergeron.
Bergeron dates Tre Mitchell’s mother. UMass has three players that played for Bergeron at Woodstock.

Woodstock and UMass are joined at the hip.

If the talent is there, and McCall can take advantage of it, then UMass will be good.

The latter part of that sentence is a big IF however.

Game was against a D3 team. Let’s see how all the UMass newcomers do against tough D1 opponents. Tough to rely on Fr as we know.

Oh I agree. But I am saying as far as reports that his shot is much improved, I can believe it based on the fact that he had solid mechanics. I was going more on what I heard then what he did in his scrimmage.

Sure it was a D3 team but the whole UMASS team was playing the same team but TJ excelled with his 4-6 shooting 3P and 4-5 FT for 18 points in his first college game. URI also played a D3 team in RIC for that matter.

TJ has been a solid shooter since I first saw him at Pilgrim HS. He hit 9-10 FTs as Pilgrim one its first State Championship in 52 years a few years ago. Can’t help but root for TJ being a local RI kid. Just wish he was at URI :-(

Has UMASS surprised with 3-0 start so far?

I would say yes. UMASS was ranked by Coaches as #11 in preseason coaches poll. UMASS has shown they can be at least #11, probably higher. The Northeastern win was impressive.
UMASS will play 13 OOC games with 7 teams in the Madness 144. URI plays 10 OOC games with 6 teams in Madness Top 144.
6 of the 7 UMASS games will be in a consecutive game stretch from game 6 to game 11. A tough stretch that will show their capabilities or lack thereof.

UMASS OOC Schedule with Madness Top 134 Preseason Team Rankings (if listed):
1.UMASS Lowell - better than expected win since UMASS Lowell handily best LIU
2.@ Fairfield - good win as was close point spread and on the road
3. #94 - Northeastern. Excellent win since NE Ranked and UMASS was not ranked. NE defeated #44 Ranked Harvard
4. Central Connecticut State
5. Rider
6. #7 Virginia Mohegan Sun
7. #38 Arizona State / #110 St Johns
8. #104 @ Rutgers
9. #63 South Carolina
10. #44 @ Harvard
11. #112 Yale

12. Maine
13. @ AKRON

UMASS has 9 players averaging 10+ minutes so far.
3 of the top 5 in minutes are freshmen
5 of the top 9 are freshmen so a very young team that could bode well for in season improvement vs a more veteran laden team

Minutes per game
31-East. Freshman. PG is leading A10 in A/TO. 20 to 2. 16th in Scoring in A10
29-Pierre. Junior.
29-Tre Mitchell. Freshman. 9th in scoring in A10
27-Diallo. Sophomore.
26-Weeks. Freshman. 14th in scoring in A10. 1st in 3P% in A10. A10 Rookie of Week
22-Clergeot. Junior.
13-Santos. Freshman.
12.Kelton Mitchell. Freshman.
11.Babtiste. Senior.

T.J. Weeks, UMass: Classmate Tre Mitchell, an ESPN 100 prospect, was the more hyped freshman entering the program, but Weeks has been terrific off the bench through eight games. Weeks is shooting 54.2% from 3-point range on six attempts per game, while averaging 15.5 points and 4.1 rebounds. He has only played 30 minutes once this season -- and he went for 19 points, seven rebounds and four 3-pointers against Rutgers.

I saw Dominguez play several times in AAU last summer and was impressed. He has good potential to be an effective 3 point shooter.

Now Preston Santos and TJ Weeks in the starting line up as Freshman for UMASS. (Weeks recovering from surgery)

And now another RI Player goes to UMASS.

UMASS fans seem happy with McCall 2nd half of season
They will improve getting their Top Scorer (and only a Freshman), TJ Weeks back from Hernia Surgery.
It’s McCall’s team at least for next season and things are looking up as they started 3 freshman and have some solid recruits coming in.

The attendance at the 9,493 seat Mullins Center has likely also hit bottom with the fifth straight losing season. The numbers for this year (2,717) were only slightly less than the previous season (2,792). I would think with a talented young team, more people will come out going forward.

UMASS HOME ATTENDANCE IN THE LAST DECADE
SEASON | GAMES | TOTAL | AVERAGE
2010-11 | 17 | 56,096 | 3,300
2011-12 | 16 | 68,471 | 4,279
2012-13 | 14 | 73,564 | 5,255
2013-14 | 13 | 85,069 | 6,544
2014-15 | 15 | 68,291 | 4,553
2015-16 | 16 | 53,841 | 3,365
2016-17 | 18 | 59,338 | 3,297
2017-18 | 17 | 50,901 | 2,994
2018-19 | 17 | 47,468 | 2,792
2019-20 | 16 | 43,477 | 2,717
TOTAL | 159 | 606,516 | 3,815
