Wonder if anyone has ever gone directly from Alabama-Birmingham to Stanford before, for work or school or any other reason?

This one could have A-10 implications - the Will Wade to Vandy rumors have already started.

Re: NCAA Coaching Carousel - 2016
Hardly a dynamic hire for Pitt. I think Dixon was better, but both seemed to have worn out their welcomes at their respective schools. Stallings' team this year was picked to win the conference and instead were in the first four. From listening to the people that cover Pitt, quite a number of coaches were approached and showed little to no interest. Throw in the Sheldon Jeter angle, and it's a decidedly meh move. If players stay, though, Pitt could be good next year.

Once again giving bad info Cooley and PC working on an extension.RF1 wrote:PC is going to take a step backwards with Dunn leaving and more than likely Bentil following him out the door. Word on the street is that Ed has come to realize he has brought PC as far as he can. He knows he will never be able to consistently recruit top players given the school's student demographics and race problems. Even when he does gets some high level recruits to attend, its no guarantee they stay as he has had some bail because they don't feel comfortable on the PC campus. He knows this will never change and he is growing tired of coming soooo close with recruits but usually always losing out at the end.

A possible Cooley extension does in no way mean the RF1 is giving out bad information. PC has a diversity problem as anyone who reads the newspaper knows about.

Re: NCAA Coaching Carousel - 2016
PC should be pretty damn happy Cooley has gotten them to 3 NCAA's in a row.
I would be offering him an extension too.
URI has done that once in their history, and only because of Odom's 25 ft. shot at the buzzer against Temple.
Will we ever do that again? [3 years in a row I mean]
Especially with the same coach?

He said Cooley wanted out and would be on the first bus out of town certainly sounds like bad info to me. I will wait to see who is on the team next year before making any predictions. But I think Cooley will put a good product on the floor . With the new facility's coming should also really help the recruiting going forward.rambone 78 wrote:nickelhead, Cooley's streak is likely to end next season, especially if BB goes NBA.

You can't argue with what Cooley has done with their program.
Even with player losses [especially Chukwu], injuries, and other issues, he probably got them as far as they could go.
We're still waiting for the same thing to happen here.
The "No Excuses" Tour starts in November........

No you certainly can't, he has done a great great job. The flip side of that is that he has had 2 of the all-time great Friars in their long history play for him - Cotton and Dunn.
And has 1 last second NCAA win over an average USC team to show for it.
But I digress...

Some coaches have the rep of getting their teams to the Dance on a regular basis, but not doing much when there.
Al had that here, and especially at BC.
Still, where we've been for 17 years, ANY Dance invite is an improvement.

Going in to this year they had one player averaging over 22 minutes a game of experience. Just because you have one great player does not make you a great team . I know Bentil ended playing a lot better the anyone thought. But the fact is it was a very young and inexperienced team that I thought Cooley did an outstanding job with.bigappleram wrote:No you certainly can't, he has done a great great job. PC hasn't had enough depth of talent to go very far in the last 3 years in the tournament.
Cooley got the most of out of what they had though.
Having that 1 or 2 players that can win games for you at the end, certainly helped too.
That's what we're missing. We need to find them.

Re: NCAA Coaching Carousel - 2016
Though Coley is neither perfect nor excellent (yet), he's done a very, very good job at PC -- as he had at Fairfield. Hell, if URI'd gone to one NCAA people here would have gone nuts! Twice -- wacko! Thrice -- berserk!!!
Who's kidding whom????
When a team has a star player, Dunn, you can ride him -- two, all the better!!!! The second (Bentil) developed to the point that he's a marginal 1st-round pick. Who wouldn't want that for, let's say Hassan Martin's development during the last two years?????? Who here thought that Martin was head and shoulders above Bentil after last season/going into this season??? Who thought it'd be the other way around in terms of development?
Oh, well......
Let's hope that URI crushes PC at the Dunkin' Derelicts' Center next season -- Bentil or no Bentil.
There shouldn't be any excuses.

Former Arizona State coach Herb Sendek has been hired by Santa Clara.
And if you want to see a diverse resume, check out the likely new UNLV coach, Chris Beard.
Rick Stansbury gets the Western Kentucky job.
Mike Dunleavy, in a somewhat interesting move, has been hired by Tulane.
Two recruits have asked for their releases from Pitt since Stallings was hired.

Re: NCAA Coaching Carousel - 2016
Cooley has coached all time Friars? Having a horse is one thing. Developing a horse and then riding that horse is another thing.
IMHO Cooley coaches a style that puts his best players in the position to succeed and he bangs away at that. Not only that but he doesn't waste time in a season. He coaches the team the same way every game. He doesn't hide things or play games in the early season. They play through that player or players and they get better at it.
I think DH wastes time early developing roles instead of nailing them down preseason and then forcing the team to run through that from the jump.
I know the roster has been in flux. PC's roster has been in flux.
It is easier for players to know their role and spend all their effort and mental reps on figuring out how to succeed in that role.
Also his formula works. The biggest thing for a player is that if they buy into what the coach is selling that it will lead them to success.

SPG, yes Dunn and Cotton, I would guess by most Friar experts, would be considered Top 10 of all time at PC.
That does not intend to take away from the job and results Cooley has achieved, through major adversity and obstacles, I was just making a statement. He has done a great job IMO. We owe them a smack down in the worst way this year, has to happen.

I get a kick out of these extensions.
If Dan makes the Dance next season he will get something similar.
What do they really mean? Means they're good for next season?
All of them have buyout provisions. Here today, gone tomorrow.......

Not really, 208.
Schools have the option to shitcan the coach anytime during that contract.
Might cost them a little more to do so, but nothing like what happened with URI and Baron.
That was hideous.

Are you sure about that? Have you read Dan's contract or others like Shaka's or Will Wade's, etc? They're available to the public.rambone 78 wrote:Not really, 208.

If the school terminates without cause, they're on the hook for any future guaranteed compensation or other pre-negotiated "damages". Schools protect themselves by including buy-out clauses for when another school comes and steals their coach as well as language that enables a for-cause termination due to NCAA violations, etc etc. Also protecting schools are "offset" clauses where any other coaching job earned during the original term of the contract would subtract from the agreed upon liquidated damages paid by the original school.
Schools that extend 7 or 8 years in advance are showing confidence in their coach. URI's problem was having TOO MUCH confidence (too many years) in Baron despite only modest performance.
URI has high confidence in Dan Hurley. VCU has high confidence in Will Wade. Short of an unforeseen NCAA violation or other major issue that qualifies for cause, they're happy to have their coach on the sideline for the full term.

That Tech job is good. Pass on that? Wait for what?
An ACC job in a desirable metropolitan area. Fair amount of history/tradition.
Title appearance this century.
Has Larranaga had a head coaching job? I know he is a hot coach but that is a great first job. Or even last job.
The higher paying jobs in NCAA pay higher wages because the teams have more $$$ coming in. The hall of famers in the ACC are all old. You get Tech up to the top half of the league during this upcoming transition, some March success, and there is no reason to jump ship.

Re: NCAA Coaching Carousel - 2016
Hiring the "right" coach can completely turn a program around.
Especially one like GT, which has the facilities and money.
As for firing a coach, URI can OF COURSE let DH go at any time.
Depends on what's in the contract, as to monetary payouts and the like.
Ever hear of firing a coach for not meeting expectations?
Who here thinks that Dan will still be the coach here at the end of his current contract [2021 I think], if he doesn't get the program to the Dance at least once or more?
Yeah they have confidence now, but could it be false confidence? We'll know soon.
URI doesn't know that Dan will fulfill his promises. Nobody does, until or unless it happens.

I am by no means a PC Friar expert, but I think there is quite a bit recency bias saying Cotton is a Top 10 friar. Considering they have about 10 numbers retired & that doesn't include Thorpe, Donovan, Murdock, Croshere, Gomes or Marshon Brooks, I don't think he makes the cut.bigappleram wrote:SPG, yes Dunn and Cotton, I would guess by most Friar experts, would be considered Top 10 of all time at PC.

They are both clutch players. I would take either. Or both.
You can have 2 guys who are close in talent. One has "it" at the end of games. One doesn't.
Guess which one I would take?
Right now, does URI have anyone who consistently raises their game in crunch time?
Didn't think so.

Re: NCAA Coaching Carousel - 2016
Depends how you are determining Top 10 Bress, its subjective of course...but how many PC players have been lottery picks? That alone elevates Dunn to the upper echelon of any list. Cotton's senior season was one for the ages, IMO comparable to Murdock, Shammgod, but for what he did single-handedly at times I would give Cotton the edge over both.
Dunn and Bentil are two different players - Big Ben can't dribble, pass or defend the perimeter. That will be an issue in the NBA, if he decides to go. Or the reason why he decides not to...Dunn needs to work on his shooting, but he is elite at a bunch of things necessary to play with the best in the world.

Re: NCAA Coaching Carousel - 2016
Walker was easily the best I've seen at PC, followed by Barnes and Ernie. Wilkens was a little before my time. I can think of several more that were better than Cotton.
