Student Section to be Renamed "Rhody Ruckus"

I think it shoudn't get a "name" until it earns a name. For this upcoming season, how about just "Student Section". If they want it called something better, earn your stripes, students!

All the best memories came from the student section at Keaney (i.e the stage that was converted to seats).

It's not just about yelling at the opposing team either. Sometimes it's just as important to get in the head of a key home team player and try to get him going.

Some players pay more attention to the crowd then you would care to believe. Cuttino Mobley was like that. We had a lot of players like that over the years.

I remember Cat having a crap game when the Bonnies came to Keaney the Elite Eight season, and every time he came down the floor in the second half, we would be cheering for him by name, every time he touched the ball. We'd yell, Make that, Cat, everytime he was open and he just started draining them from all over. We won that game by one point. Cat grabbed a defensive board that fell off the rim on the far end with a second left.

The student section can be a real lift in the close ones. We'd come in with a small buzz on and go crazy. And the people in paid seats would look down at us like we were the scum of the earth and we were lucky they allowed us to be there, as if we were all oxygen theives. That isn't ever going to change, unfortunately.

I say, if you are going to treat the students like they are all on basketball welfare anyway, let them pick their own name.

I always prefered something a little self degrading, like on SNL: "the not ready for prime time players."

URI Athletics and the Student Section are still looking for submissions to rename the Student Section. There are many great ideas in this thread but how many have actually been submitted?

I thought it would be a good idea if the mods organized a vote and we can submit our top 3

Yes, we could do a vote, but I personally think they should earn themselves a name during the season.

I don't think they are going to wait until the middle of the season to name themselves.

So lets participate and collectively give them some good options.

Maybe we can glean the top 5 from comments within this thread and then vote on the top 5?

Why should WE elect a name for the student section?
Let them pick one of their choosing.
It's their part of the fanbase.

I think voting on top three is a great idea. And we can name it then build reputation. Name is a big thing that can help marketing and make going to a game as a student sound more intriguing

Billyboy. I agree. We aren't naming it for them, just giving suggestions. I don't know what their process will be once they get the suggestions. Would be good if they submitted options to the students to vote on.

I went back through the entire thread and picked out the names that people mentioned the most. What is clear is that there were some key words that resonated with people:

Rhody, Kingston, Ryan, Rowdies, Krazies, Zoo, Keaney...

Most of the top 10 choices contain the key words above:

I agree with ATP.

As much as I'd like to have it called something like the Kingston Zoo...student sections with names have earned them...like the zoo in pittsburgh. I don't think the remnants of the mob or student section have earned the right to a name.

I also agree with rod, that it should come from the students..it's their school, take it back and make that place awesome. We'll try to help out from 205

- "The Firehouse Gang" is the best by far in my opinion.
- The Rhode Warriors

For a team nickname, once the Rams return to their runnin' and dunkin' ways:
- "The Rhode Island Slam Bake"

When some poor cannon fodder team arrives in Kingston, this board can predict the margin of victory by using:

Problem with Firehouse Gang is, very few people will even
know what it refers to.
Same with Ghiorse Factor.
I personally like Ramrods. I used to have an email with that in it,
and some used to accuse me of it having a sexual nature, which
was not my intent.

Maybe .... though I've always thought of cattle or horses "stampeding" .... but I guess it could apply to any animal, Rams included.

Well...according to dictionary.com, A stampede is "a sudden, frenzied rush or headlong flight of a herd of frightened animals, especially cattle or horses."

Sheep are heard animals, and a Ram is obviously a male sheep so I guess they can stampede!

Nothing sparks fear in the opponent and denotes an enthusiastic fan base like "the beach".

That said, I think that name actually represents one of the more sellable aspects of our state university and its proximity to some great beaches. When the program is where we want it and we have real national games on sight it would be enticing to potential students watching at home.

The more I think about it, I actually like "The Beach" a lot.

Fits in with the state and team, the key of course would be the student involvement...the name instantly sets a theme for the section that the kids can get creative with and would hopefully encourage more students to join in by wearing beach gear/accessories...in January.

I like it too, but I think it is Ironic that your avatar is Leo and you are cheerleading for "The Beach." That movie was kinda cool. I'm actually going to the place where they filmed that in Thailand this November for my honeymoon.

I'm warming up to The Beach myself. They can even have a Keaney blue wave. But I mostly like it for the idea of having a section of bikini girls. I think this may give attendance a boost.

I like The Beach too. IMHO a name for a student section needs to be short and sweet so it can roll right off the tongue (see: The Mob). It'll catch on with students and fans way more easily.
