Looking Back - Game #5 from 2012-13: URI vs. Loyola (MD)
Shake off that turkey sleep, the Rams play tonight. I'll be doing the usual live chat thing at 7, when they tip-off against Loyola, and I should have the postgame pressers as usual. Chat box will be available here: http://patch.com/A-zKYR

Re: Game #5: URI vs. Loyola (MD)
Everyone seems to feel URI is somehow due a win, but Loyola sounds like the better team so I'm not expecting a W.

Here's to hoping that Erik Etherly ate too much turkey and stuffing and is totally off his game.

Looking forward to hearing that Rhody gets its first W. I think if they can play as well as or better than they played over the weekend they will be fine.

URI +4 at the moment. Seems like it's expected to be a close game. Don't know much about Loyola but yeah looks like Etherly is a guy to watch for (16pts., 7rebs so far) along with Cormier (18ppg).
Should be a close one but hopefully Rhody can pull it off.

Looking at individual players stats on KenPoms site (buy a subscription if you're into stats, it's worth the 20 bucks) and it doesn't seem like they have much in the way of three point shooters. Their two best long-range shooters are Robert Olson (8-32, 25%) and Tyler Hubbard (12-24, 50%), and they don't have anyone else with double digit attempts. Unfortunately they are incredibly efficient in their two-point shooting with almost every player shooting somewhere around 50%. Seems like they must pound it inside with big men, which is of course our biggest weakness. Gonna need a good defensive effort from Hare, Aaman and Brooks if we wanna win this one.

Is Nik not playing again tonight? I am watching the online feed and it didnt look like he was announced with the starting lineup.
Looks like Hare is getting the start as well.

Just about ready to start, and I've started updating the chat - http://patch.com/A-zKYR - It looks like they're waiting for a TV broadcast to finish up. Weird.

Thanks. Nik enters the game at the 17 minute mark for Hare. 3 solid minutes from Hare though to start the game. Made one mistake but recovered nicely with a block.

Yeah Powell had two terrible inbounds turnovers that earned him a spot on the bench for a minute.

You make a valid point, it wasnt all on Powell. Maybe call a timeout rather than just throw it away though.twisted3829 wrote:Tough to blame powell on the inbounds when no one moved or got open

Hare has shown off some great athleticism tonight. Only four points, but 12 boards and at least 3 blocks, I believe.ElmCityRhody wrote:Sounds like hare is having his best game yet as a ram. Nice.

Re: Game #5: URI vs. Loyola (MD)
The thing about Hare's slams is that he just looks so effortless doing it. Like, both of them, it didn't look like he got that much off the ground, but they were both easy.

Re: Game #5: URI vs. Loyola (MD)
Absolutely, I was thinking the same thing, it finally looks like he is just reacting out there and not overthinking things too much. Just doing what comes naturally to him. Hopefully the game is finally slowing down for him out there.SGreenwell wrote:The thing about Hare's slams is that he just looks so effortless doing it. Seriously with the free throws guys? Killing me.
But to be fair, lots of good in the game, too.

Wait till next year....sigh
Seriously.
Something tells me Hurley will make sure this team, including the new guys next year, shoots FT's better.
They keep getting closer to winning.....some day they will.

That's a tough one. Didn't get to see any of it because I'm at the celtics game tonight. I was following it and thought we were getting into the win column tonight. At least we got the Jordan Hare coming out party. This team is close, they just don't have any players that have experience closing out wins. They have to learn how to do that this year. I'm sure the Hurleys are frustrated, but I'm not. I certainly would prefer to be winning these games, but I don't think it means much in the big picture.

Re: Game #5: URI vs. Loyola (MD)
Powell couldn't hit the side of a barn tonight, and Nik forgot how to shoot FT's.
It's tough when you have to go with basically 6 players. Yes, I know PC does too, but they have better and more experienced players, especially guards which are all important in college BB.
It's frustrating when the team keeps playing good defense, but can't break thru because they can't generate enough offense.
Going to be a lot of close, low scoring losses all season.

Re: Game #5: URI vs. Loyola (MD)
Devastating loss, shot ourselves in the foot about 20 times down the stretch. The blown shot clock call didn't help us either, that gave them two points they didn't deserve.
On the positive side of things look at Hare's stat line: 8 pts (3-5 FG, 2-6 FT) 16 rebounds, and 7 blocks!

Re: Game #5: URI vs. Loyola (MD)
Lots of mistakes. Three turnovers on inbound plays. And it was unforgivable to let their deep shooter get wide open at the end of regulation coming out of a timeout. That's two wins turned into losses.

What was the issue with shot clock play? I was sitting behind that basket and I'm certain it nicked the front of the rim before the shot clock went off.

Re: Game #5: URI vs. Loyola (MD)
The late game inbounds poor plays which resulted in turnovers killed us, mix in some poor freethrow %, sprinkle in the failure to get rebounds on missed Loyola freethrows and we end up again on the short end. Difficult to watch this team give so much effort and come up short. Hare, besides what has been stated did not get into any fo trouble, which for me is a huge deal for a freshmen, learning how to be a force on defensive w/o fouling.

Didn't get to see any of the game, but loved it when I looked at the box score and saw 16 reabounds and 7 blocks from Hare. Just curious, what was the size of Loyola's front court players?

Re: Game #5: URI vs. Loyola (MD)
Back from one of the most frustrating games ever!
First of all, this was Jordan Hare's coming out party.
If he continues to play like this, we have a real player.
He was awesome tonight.
Tonight was also the worst performance by a URI point guard in memory.
Just the same old Powell, driving into traffic and getting smothered.
Dribbling until the clock was running out.
I heard on the way home he had no turnovers, but he threw two
inbound passes away.
Awful free throw shooting destroyed any chance we had to win.
That and not getting a rebound on two missed free throws in OT.
Very frustrating night and another winnable game slips awy due to failure
to close out a game.

Re: Game #5: URI vs. Loyola (MD)
Hurley mentioned specifically that they were worried with the rebounding on FTs if they fouled up 3, and the results during OT seem to suggest he might have been prophetic about that.twisted3829 wrote:free throw shooting!!, and I hate the not fouling while up 3 with 10 seconds to go.

To me, all the missed FTs were definitely the turning point - Rams went 10-for-20, and only two of those (Hare 1-for-2) were taken during the overtime. Even if they shoot 70 percent for the game, that's an extra two or three points right there, which would have been all they needed.
(The same thing goes for the non-shot clock violation. I didn't get a replay, but that sure did look like a shot clock violation to the naked eye. However, Rams still needed to box out and rebound on that play anyway.)

Re: Game #5: URI vs. Loyola (MD)
Big, but no one as skilled as Ohio State or Seton Hall. I can't remember them using much post-up offense, and instead, it kind of resembled Baronball when Jimmy was here. Lots and lots of screens and picks to try and free up Olson, who did finish with a game-high 20 points. If Loyola did have a real post thread, I imagine they would have tried to go at Hare and pick up some fouls, but they didn't. (Their guards were actually their best post-up options, as they went to work a bit on Munford and Powell from time to time.)Billyboy78 wrote:Didn't get to see any of the game, but loved it when I looked at the box score and saw 16 reabounds and 7 blocks from Hare. Re: Game #5: URI vs. Loyola (MD)
Win one of these games and the floodgates may open. It seems like its a mental hurdle right now. Once they clear it, maybe they will run off a string of them. Other than VT, they've been in every game. I just want to see them break through sooner than later so they have some chance to build on it.
