Re: All things Dan Hurley/UCONN THREAD
Since DH, Luke Murray and Tom Moore (f him) used to coach at Rhody, along with former Rams Andre Berry and Malik Martin, I'm calling UConn Rhody West. I've been joking about that with one of my colleagues who went to UConn and apologized to me profusely 6 years ago when DH left. We both want to see the two teams start playing each other again, though both agree it isn't likely to happen.

Re: All things Dan Hurley/UCONN THREAD
What struck me watching the end of the game last night, was how intense the UConn defense was even in a 30 point blowout. And they were the subs!
There's no letup on defense. That's how hard his teams play. He did it at URI with less talent.
That's a mindset I would love for us to adopt someday. Play like you practice.
We all know how hard Dan's practices were here.
Archie needs to find guys who are ready and willing to play that hard.
We all know how we currently play defense. Just the opposite, no matter the talent difference.

Re: All things Dan Hurley/UCONN THREAD
This is a true story:RhowdyRam02 wrote: ↑5 months ago I hate Coach K far more than any grown man should hate a person they've never met
My six year old son has caught the basketball bug. I got to coach him this year on his first “real” team. It was awesome and he loves to play.
I started trying to teach him about basketball by having him watch videos of the ‘86 Celtics on YouTube. And this kid loves Larry Bird in a way that is pretty comical considering he was born 35 years after Larry retired.
So out of his obsession with Larry Bird, and as part of my ongoing trying to educate him about basketball, we were watching a video about the original Dream Team. They did a whole thing about how the college all-stars came in and supposedly beat the Dream Team in the world’s first “secret scrimmage” lol.
Coach K was an assistant on that team and so they had a soundbite from him from an interview where he was saying that Chuck Daly threw that scrimmage on purpose to send a message to the team. Which, ok fine if that’s how you want to spin 40 years later ok by me. But this dickhead looks right into the camera and says “those guys might think they really beat the dream team, and some people believe in Santa Claus. But they didn’t and Santa isn’t real.”
Like, buddy there are some things that people just don’t say. It’s not like this documentary was Rated R. Unbelievable douchebag.

This team, collectively, is kind of crazy and so easy to root for. The roster, 1 through 14, is a solid, unselfish group. Watching them celebrate each other is almost as much fun as the wins.

The story is already getting a lot of play, but I think there’s something very cool about three of the four head coaches in the Final Four being former high school coaches.

Yeah I heard about that and as recently as 2010
Watching the McDonald’s AA game now was wondering why UConn doesn’t have any players from this game ?

Sampson from Houston just got COY over Hurley.
Kind of surprised.
Just more motivation for UConn to win it this year.

Re: All things Dan Hurley/UCONN THREAD
One of 16 head coaches all time to win multiple national championships (would be 17 but Slick Rick gonna Slick Rick, so his Louisville title was vacated).
John Wooden, Mike Krzyzewski, Adolph Rupp, Roy Williams, Jim Calhoun, Bob Knight, Denny Crum, Henry Iba, Branch McCracken, Dean Smith, and Phil Woolpert are all in the Basketball Hall of Fame and College Basketball Hall of Fame.
Jay Wright and Bill Self are in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
Billy Donovan and Dan Hurley aren't in either hall of fame yet.
Ed Jucker didn't get in either hall of fame.
At 51, with his program running on all cylinders, he's already in this rare company. It's not so much if he'll be a hall of famer, it's when and which ones

UConn gets Liam McNeely , who was Cooper Flagg teammate and Aiden Mahoney who was a really good guard for St Mary’s , 2 excellent pickups

Re: All things Dan Hurley/UCONN THREAD
I think he’s said that the last few years- everyone laughs and then they go out and prove him right! Next year is going to be interesting- possibly losing the entire starting line-up (although I think Karaban comes back) and most of their scoring and mainly going with youth/inexperience is going to be a test.
In a time when the sport is kind of in chaos, although I think it’s temporary, UConn is working it as good as anyone. They had a five man freshman class in ‘23 and are bringing back all of them except the likely lottery pick, despite those four playing limited minutes. Their only transfers out are a walk-on and pretty much the last guy on the depth chart. It’s all tied together- recruiting and signing the right guys, great coaching and development, winning championships. Each part helps them do the other parts really well.

Mahoney had great quotes the other day about choosing UConn mentioning all 3 coaches
Hurley and UConn are navigating this new age of college hoops the best , be insane if they can get 3 in a row !

Re: All things Dan Hurley/UCONN THREAD
With Karaban coming back, their roster is set. It’s still working for them to recruit high school talent, develop them, and fill in with transfers. They won a championship, lost three starters, won another championship, and have now lost four starters.
Hassan Diarra (senior+, 3rd year at UConn)
Samson Johnson (high school recruit)
Alex Karaban (high school recruit)
Aidan Mahaney (transfer from St. Mary’s)
Tarris Reed (transfer from Michigan)
Solo Ball (high school recruit)
Jayden Ross (high school recruit)
Youssouf Singare (high school recruit
Jaylin Stewart (high school recruit)
Isaiah Abraham (4 star, top 75)
Liam McNeeley (5 star)
Ahmad Nowell (4 star, top 50j

I saw that news today, Reef.
Good news for Dan. A 3-peat is unlikely, unless your HC is DH.

Re: All things Dan Hurley/UCONN THREAD
I'm sure I'm wrong, but I just can't see DH to LA - he's an east coast guy - though he'll be closer to his brother. If it were the Knicks or the Nets I'd see it more.
But bringing the Lakers back to championship level is a legacy thing, but is it more than a 3 peat? He'd be the first since Wooden to win more than 2 Natty's in a row.
Would love to hear Ace's take on this.

If DH does get the Laker job will he take Luke Murray with him as his offensive assistant as he seems like a guru ?
Also will Kimani be the new UConn coach ?

I saw that one of their posters panned the inexperienced (at the HC position, that is) assistant route. The poster even referenced the handoff of the Rhody program from DH to DC as an example of why not to do it.NYGFan_Section208 wrote: ↑3 months agoand the BY is all ratcheted up about keeping assistants to keep the roster intact. UConn makes lucrative offer to Dan Hurley, ‘but there’s a cap that exists’
Updated: Jun. 08, 2024, 11:00 a.m.|Published: Jun. 08, 2024, 9:33 a.m.
From the article
Reached by text Saturday morning, UConn AD David Benedict said he was on an airplane and not immediately available to comment.
Jeff Goodman of Stadium reported that UConn’s current offer would make Hurley the third-highest paid college in college basketball behind Kansas’ Bill Self and Arkansas’ John Calipari.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported the Lakers will make a “massive, long-term offer,” and Lakers insider Anthony Irwin posted on X that the offer will be in the area of $100 million over eight years -- or an average annual value of $12.5 million.
For now, the basketball world waits on Hurley’s decision.

Re: All things Dan Hurley/UCONN THREAD
I can't see Hurley moving to LA. He has sort of said that you can only have so much money. I know he wants to coach in the NBA at some point but I don't see him walking away from what he has going at UCONN to take a gamble on the NBA so early in his career. He's an east coast guy and I bet his wife wouldn't let him do it anyway!
Keeping things in perspective...
