Thanks for posting this, Sevegny.

I will have to look him up.

Although I may not see as much value in recruiting prep players under the current portal/no sit out era as before the portal/no sit out era, I still enjoy evaluating their games and how they could fit with Rhody.

Recruiting a kid for 3 years will be very expensive. I no longer see the point.

Imho, I think we have to pay closer attention to player acquisition expense today than we have historically. Not that we didn’t in the past but with unlimited player movement plus NIL, I think it needs more focused attention.

Of course that (player movement, NIL ) could change sooner or later.

Yeah I agree. I like at least to see what schools they are targeting for relationships. And yeah breaking down tape as a bball junkie is always fun.

Edit: Building those relationships can always help the 2nd time around when they transfer after leaving the first school they played for. Happens all the time. But yeah as of now portal is definitely the trend in current landscape

I can't imagine the difference in recruiting a high school player for 3 years, traveling to his high school games, traveling to his AAU summer tournaments, traveling to his home to meet his parents, bringing him in for visits, etc., as compared to recruiting someone in the portal for a couple of weeks and only having to pay for the visit. And if that high school player commits and is really good, he is gone. Sure, keep recruiting high school kids, but don't waste a lot of money doing it. Recruit locally (New England, New York) where the coach can drive to games and come back the same day.

Adapt and overcome. 👍🏼

I agree, 78. Others may see it differently - as to scope of driving territory, for instance - or may see it completely opposite and make a good case but, your appraoch makes sense to me under the current system.

I actually like Archie's strategy: sign prep players early and then move on to the portal.

Did a quick search but couldn’t find much on him.

6-8” (more recent has him at 6-9”) wing. Described as a slasher, difficult matchup. That said, being a ‘27, there is a long way to go as far as skill and body development goes. A compelling prep recruiting target for us to keep track of the next few years.

Good question, 78. Although he is close by in NY.

That said, we don’t appear - on quick glance - to be involved with many recruits going by this side of KB: 2-3 in 25’s; any 26’s (?); one ‘27. This part of the board has no-where near the prep recruiting buzz it used to have.

Maybe the prep recruiting slow down is the new strategy (i.e. more focus on transfers) Archie and staff are pursuing while not totally neglecting the prep recruits ?

That is the strategy I would be pursuing now if I was a HC.

I do miss the prep activity, however, and discussing their strengths, weaknesses and potential fit at Rhody.

I don’t think we were ever mentioned with Manyawu. I think someone went through Cunningham’s twitter following and saw Manyawu that doesn’t mean we were involved with him. The assistant coach that recruited him to Wyoming was hired by Ben McCollum at Drake. They were the heavy favorite from the start.

A big man target here freshman Cam Manyawu 6’9 forward from Wyoming has been in contact with the staff. Averaged 7 ppg and 6 rpg last year.

This account was created in March, has 78 tweets and 96 followers.

His bio, amongst other things, reads “Father of 2 virgins” and is a PC fan account. Complete troll.

You really think that is a legitimate news breaking account?

Has a tweet saying Foumena committed to LSU.

Has a tweet saying Gavin Griffith committed to PC.

Has a tweet saying Bronny James committed to Cal Poly.

Has a tweet saying Porzingis torn his Achilles.

All incorrect.

But yea, I guess people here will continue to believe any single Twitter account and take it as fact.

Billyboy,
Glad this was a hoax.

I saw Joson Sanon play live a number of times with AAU EYBL Expressions Elite. Was very, very impressed. Impressed So much that my happiest day in the Freshmen recruiting calendar this past year was when Sanon did NOT pick PC.

Sanon has to be getting huge money to go to Arizona. He will be in the NBA as soon as age eligible.

Point of interest about Sanon is that he is from Fall River and his Freshman year he played for Durfee High School. The Herren brothers played at Durfee and also a heavy recruited player named Kevin Whiting had an outstanding career at Durfee and picked URI. Whiting was an excellent shooter and overall player. I'm sure you remember Whiting and how many of us followed his HS Career hoping he would pull the trigger on URI.

If NIL did not become so powerful with no limit in amount of money a player can be paid my guess is PC would have landed Sanon being from nearby Fall River. Sanon attended many PC games while in HS/Prep School and I know some PC fans who really thought PC had the inside shot at him. Maybe Cooley's departure played a part in losing Sanon? Most likely it was a huge pile of cash that PC couldn't contend with. But anybody's guess.

Joson Sanon, No. 9 basketball recruit in 2025, chooses Arizona
Jonathan Givony, ESPN
Mar 20, 2024, 10:11 AM ET
Joson Sanon, the No. 9-ranked recruit in the Class of 2025, told ESPN he has committed to Arizona.
"I'm going to Arizona," Sanon said Wednesday. "I love the fit, the way they score, how they get you open. They play at a fast pace, and being in the center of a high-powered offense was attractive. I wanted to get locked in before things really get going with the transfer portal."
Sanon says he picked the Wildcats from a list of schools that included Kentucky, Kansas, UConn, Louisville, Indiana and others.
Sanon plans to graduate high school this summer and reclassify to 2024, which will make him eligible to enroll in college immediately and give him the option to enter the 2025 NBA draft. He was projected as the 2025 draft's No. 28 prospect in a mock draft released on ESPN last month.
Sanon, a 6-foot-5 wing who plays at Vermont Academy, is considered one of the best shooters and overall scorers in the high school game. He helped his team win the NEPSAC AAA championship two weeks ago, which he said contributed to his decision.
"I had a couple of benchmarks for this season that would help me decide if I'm ready to graduate high school early," Sanon said. "I wanted to win a championship, lead a team, be a primary scorer, and really lock in defensively. I'm physically strong enough for college. The next step is learning how to think the game better and adding to what I already do."
Sanon, who is from Fall River, Massachusetts, is the son of Haitian parents who emigrated to the US in the late 1990s. He says he is hoping to join Arizona alumnus Bennedict Mathurin as the second Haitian player in the NBA.
The Wildcats went 25-8 this season and are the No. 2 seed in the West region of the NCAA tournament, playing their first game versus No. 15 Long Beach State in Salt Lake City on Thursday. Sanon joins top-20 recruit Carter Bryant as the headliners of its 2024 class, as well as No. 34 prospect Jamari Phillips and No. 89 prospect Emmanuel Stephen.
Arizona is expected to retain much of its young core, but are likely to lose its top four scorers in All-Conference standouts Pelle Larsson, Keshad Johnson, and Oumar Ballo to graduation, as well as Pac-12 Player of the Year Caleb Love.

My brother played at Durfee a long time ago, in the mid 60s. If you haven't read Bob Terino's book, there's a great story about Kevin Whiting and his recruitment. Kevin still goes to all the URI games.
