Alabama slammed the door shut in the last 3 minutes. I would have liked to see GCU pull the upset.

Yale’s hanging around.
ETA: Kiss of death post. Yale’s deficit goes from 7 to 16 in the minutes since I posted.
My apologies to Yale fans.

One heck of a finish to the Houston/TX A&M game. A&M cut a 13 pt deficit to 3 in a few minutes. Wow

What a finish. A&M got 2 good looks to tie it in the final 10 seconds but missed. 1.2 seconds left, A&M inbounds and hits the 3P to incredibly send the game to OT!!
Announcers say Sampson does not like to foul in these situations when up by 3 points.

With all the players fouling out, Houston puts in a 4th yr walk-on. Nuts!
And the walk-on just got fouled with 17 secs left with a 3 pt lead. Wow!
And he hits 1 of 2 coming in cold off the bench. Wow!

Absolutely Awesome game. What a battle. Everytime A&M seemed beaten they proved otherwise.
1-seed Houston will move on to play 4-seed Duke who beat 13-seed James Madison by 38
Houston is certainly battle tested after tonight. Crazy. Madness.

That really was madness, Ramster. What a battle.
If I get to watch us win a NCAAT game again, then I hope it’s not a game like that because I’ll never survive it. Wow!

No Cinderella team made it past the first weekend. Only two teams outside the P5 and Big East (Gonzaga and SDSU) have both been to the championship final in the past decade.Jersey77 wrote: ↑5 months ago Sweet 16 teams remaining by conference:

A comment about James Madison and their 35 point loss to Duke. This team played hard the entire way through. There were no easy baskets for Duke. Pleased to see that the coach was able to get the buy in from these collegiate players. JEALOUS!!!

All the whining about the BE only getting 3 teams in is a load of crap.
The top 3 teams were miles better than the next 3.
The only legit gripe belongs to Indiana St.

Cannot say Indiana St was only team to have a gripe. Oklahoma and Seton Hall definitely have beef, but yes, the constant whining on Twitter by Big East people is incredibly annoying.rambone 78 wrote: ↑5 months ago All the whining about the BE only getting 3 teams in is a load of crap.

Oklahoma - zero Q2-4 losses, only had Q1 losses.
Seton Hall - beat UConn, 13 league wins in a Top 3 conference
Either one of those two teams should’ve been in over Virginia.
St John’s and PC - no business in the tournament

In NIT Quarterfinal play last night:
Seton Hall defeated UNLV by 23 points playing at Walsh Gym on campus as they have their NIT games.
Walsh Gym opened in 1941. Capacity is 1,316 people and was sold out last night. Walsh Gym was home to the Seton Hall men's basketball team before they moved to the Meadowlands in 1985 and then to the Prudential Center in 2007. You could hear the rims clanging whenever shots were missed last night.
VCU lost at Utah by 20 points.
Deivon Smith PG hit a triple double with 12 assists, 11 rebounds and 15 points. Smith played a year at Mississippi State and 2 years at Georgia Tech before joining Utah this season.

UConn looks strong against SDSU.
AZ can’t hit a 3 to save their lives against Clemson.

Yeah, I thought UConn would have a tough game against Auburn, but once they lost, I figured they would kill whoever they played today. The only two teams I think could beat UConn if they play their A game and UConn doesn't are Iowa State and Purdue.
Arizona missed a million wide-open shots tonight. They probably beat Clemson 90% of the time but that's why this tournament is so fun. One game anything can happen.

Meh, SDSU is just as tough as Auburn, better defensively, worse on offense, so it wouldn't have been as bad, but it still would have been bad for Auburn.steveystuds06 wrote: ↑5 months agoYeah, I thought UConn would have a tough game against Auburn, but once they lost, I figured they would kill whoever they played today. Idk about "beating Clemson 90% of the time" Zona was just not that great. Had 3 losses to 100+ NET teams. Not surprising.
I'll go with Purdue and Tennessee as the only teams that can beat them. Probably TN over Purdue, because I don't think Purdue can defend well enough.
Idk though, SDSU was playing so tough and physical and it just didn't matter. Dan is putting on a clinic.

San Diego St. is fine. They are a fringe top-25 team. They had a good draw after Auburn played horribly against Yale in the final 8 minutes. Losing a starter earlier in the game didn't help, but the missed free throws and Yale getting hot lost the game. They completely blew it. But talking strictly about style of play, matchups, and rosters, Auburn, without question, is a tougher opponent for Uconn.. I think UConn matches up better against Illinois as well. Auburn and Iowa St were the two toughest matchups for UConn in their region on paper, in my opinion.PeterRamTime wrote: ↑5 months agoMeh, SDSU is just as tough as Auburn, better defensively, worse on offense, so it wouldn't have been as bad, but it still would have been bad for Auburn.steveystuds06 wrote: ↑5 months agoYeah, I thought UConn would have a tough game against Auburn, but once they lost, I figured they would kill whoever they played today. Personally, I think all the top 10 teams in the country are great. Zona had one of the best offenses in the country, and Caleb Love is a stud. Tonight, they were ice cold. They had their worst shooting night of the entire year but still had a shot to win. Props to Clemson. They have been playing better defense than they have all year in these last three games. It took Zona to have a lid on the hoop for Clemson to sneak by them. That's why I think they would beat Clemson most nights.

I get the lid on the hoop analogy but it kind of makes it sound like Arizona just was unlucky otherwise they beat Clemson almost every time (9 of 10)steveystuds06 wrote: ↑5 months agoSan Diego St. is fine. But consider:
North Carolina and Arizona BOTH had a player take the most 3P’s in their respective games and both players went 0-9 3P so that’s 0-18 between them. RJ Davis 0-9 and 4-20 overall and Caleb Love also 0-9 3P and 5-18 overall. In big games like these two Davis and Love need to be at least average in shooting, not a combined 0-18 3P and 9-38 FG.
Clemson defense is big as they go with a center and 2 forwards with Hall 6’10” 238, Clark 6’10” 207 and Schieffelin 6’8” 238. Arizona struggled getting off good shots against the Clemson inside size.
Maybe the coaching staffs should have reeled in Davis and Love limiting them to a few 3P attempts less than the 9 that each took. Both teams have excellent other 3P shooters. Seemed like Davis tried to do too much with the ball and maybe tired himself out. 4-20 shooting is tough for the rest of the team to overcome against a quality opponent like Alabama. And maybe the Clemson and Alabama coaching staffs and their defenses focused on wearing down Davis and Love such that the pressure impacted their shooting accuracy.
Grant Nelson, the transfer after 3 years at North Dakota State came up higher for Alabama with 24P, 12R and 5 blocked shots.
Clemson beat Alabama back in November OOC.
Should be a great ACC vs SEC Elite Matchup Saturday. Too bad ARD isn’t still AC at Clemson.

Bravo to Dan Hurley whose UConn team have dominated in the NCAAs so far, winning by 32, 17, and 30. We can bask in some reflected glory of his achievement knowing he got his most important chops at Rhody. Hurley made the right decision in taking the UConn job and going to a place, not only for a bigger salary, but a place with an extensive resource support system from top to bottom. Over 25 years ago the State of Connecticut realized what a gem they had in UConn and began a massive investment program on all fronts to build UConn into what it is today. Their smart holistic view of their flagship higher ed institution was there for all to see. Too bad the short sighted officials of the State of Rhode Island cannot grasp that to this day.

UConn made $32.6M in basketball, and that's a drop in the bucket compared to what this revitalized run is getting them in terms of national exposure, enrollment, etc. They get it. URI has started to get it as well. UConn's institutional investments (and subsequent winning) have built a fanbase that also gets it, and continues to contribute.
Dan had fears about how high he could take UConn without the NIL money that some of the other programs, and I think those fears have been quelled.
If he wins a title this year he'll pull in like $7.5M. With Kentucky open I'm sure his agent will use that and it wouldn't shock me if there's a new contract again with a lot more for Luke and Kimani as assistants. Dan has made it a point to gas them up in the pressers.
For a guy who leans on Billy Donovan as a mentor, it would be pretty cool for him to be the first coach since Billy to be a repeat champ if UConn keeps this up. UConn played their C game last night and blew out a Sweet 16 game. I've never seen such a complete basketball team.
If you say you’re a Rhody fan, I know you are my brother. For you have suffered as I have suffered.

He's full of it. He most certainly did not get it. If he got it, we would've got a few more years of Hurley and a different replacement coach. Dan was ready to leave here when he realized URI didn't want to get to the next level after the 2017 run.section(105) wrote: ↑5 months agoI recall Dooley speaking that kinda language at a few FL alumni gatherings.
No matter what anyone's knowledge of Dooley's time here relative to athletics, there's a pretty easy comparison to see all the things that have changed under Parlange vs under Dooley.
Especially when it came to lobbying at the state level for athletic facilities. Dooley refused to ask for any state help for athletic facilities. You can't blame the legislature if they were never made aware of the problems with our athletic facilities. It's not a coincidence that there was a major public press campaign from Thorr and Shane that coincided with a massive push for legislators getting tours of our failing buildings. Plus Parlange is committing significantly more university dollars for athletics, it's how we were able to give Archie the contract we did. Dave Dooley was a fraud. Parlange gets it. History would be very different for us if Marc Parlange was president from 2012 to now.
If you say you’re a Rhody fan, I know you are my brother. For you have suffered as I have suffered.

Kentucky isn’t open though, don’t see how he could use that for leverage.Blue Man wrote: ↑5 months agoNailed it.
