It’s going to happen eventually, it’s happening at other schools. A few former URI guys are currently on portal watch.
It be a hoot on this board if Sebastian Thomas were the first and returned as starting PG
That would be hilarious
I think Blue Man would have a stroke

I think BlueMan would move into permanent residency in Rhody Rehab. We just need to find him a roomy. In the blizzaro world we are in now, it is like ST was sent down to single A ball for more grooming then being brought back up to Double AA ball.

I would take this player.

(PG) Jordan Sears (UT-Martin, OVC) - Averaged 21.6 pts (43% 3PT/ 84% FT)/ 4.6 rebs/ 4.5 assists.

Brantley (La Salle), Venning (Bonnies), Jimerson (SLU), and Thompson (UMass) all recently entered the portal.

We may end up improving just by default.

Food for thought:

Hurley can be a hard ass. Yet his players will run through a wall for him and give 100% effort.

Archie can be a hard ass. But his players wont give 100% effort and would rather run away to another program.

So what's the deal? One commands respect, the other doesn't get it.

Hurley's players are better, and ultimately, if you're winning, it's far more likely that players stay with your program. Like turnover among all rosters is at its peak right now because 99+ percent of the players are on teams with ended seasons. (I realize Dayton has a guy that's transferring, but he wasn't playing.)

Also, it's the old carrot & stick analogy.

You have to know when it is the right time to bust your players balls, and when to compliment them.

When to be bad cop, and when to be good cop.

When to be their dad, and when to be their friend.

Some people know how to do this like an art form, and some people have absolutely no idea how to do it. And it can vary from player to player, and someone like Hurley who obviously learned from his legendary coach father, excels at it

Very different personalities.

Dan bonded with his players, even on a personal level.
They were frequent guests at his home, Andrea was almost a mother figure to them.
He encouraged team activities together outside of the court.

I really don't know anything about Archie, but it seems that his relationship with the players is much different.

You can say it "only happens when you are winning" but for Hurley it is always. Even in the building years, and the rebuilding years, his players don't falter for him.

You can tell Archie is a good coach on the sidelines. Always finds a teaching moment with the players, either after a timeout or a free throw, or after a substitution. He’s trying. I’d work my ass off for him.

You have to treat your players the same.

If one player is allowed to get away with something that the others aren't, that can be a problem.

That could be a reason, just speculating.

Someday when we are good, our turnover will be less.

Will have to really stuff some pockets to keep our best players, but that's the reality.

It still may not matter with the present environment. SBU, UMass, and GMU all had decent seasons winning 20 games and they have about the same number as URI entering the portal.

Being a coach in this environment has to be a nightmare.

Recruiting has to be year round.

I dont think this is sustainable.

Something will change eventually. It has to.

Not sure if this is the place to put this, but an interesting article on the state of college basketball in good ol' Olean.
Transfer portalling, players behavior, and declining the NIT.

If any of the 4th year players (Luis, House and Green) are planning on going to Europe, they won't be in the portal. So, just because their name isn't in it doesn't mean they're staying. The guys to watch are Zek, Ways, Cam and Fuchs.

Normally the 4th years would put out a tweet along the lines of declaring themselves for the draft even if there's no chance they'll be drafted

Honestly, does it really matter? Even if the portal was closed guys would tweet out that they'd be entering the portal when it opens and they'd be getting contacted by schools.

Probably not, 02. There will always be a segment that attempts to circumvent the rules.

I guess it’s a question of control and management and what one’s comfort level is with it.

Rhowdy is 100% correct.

Foumena and Rory announced they were entering before it opened.

Same thing would happen if they opened the portal after the tournament.

Right? UConn and Dan had no problem discussing their head coaching position before our season ended but now it's out of control because the players are doing what coaches have been doing all along?

They're free to resign from their six and seven figure nightmares and coach basketball at their local high school if the environment is so bad and all they really care about is the purity of the game. Funny how you don't really see that happening though...

I knew Dan was gone 2 months before it was announced.

Talked to several big UConn boosters and they told me it was a 99% done deal.

Yes we raised our offer big time at the last minute, and it surprised Dan, but he wasnt going to change his mind at the last minute no matter what he said about it.

We might have avoided it if we had followed through on our promises to upgrade the program much earlier.

But typical footdragging doomed any chance of that happening.

Blue Man has told the story many times on this board.

The horse had left the barn long before we tried to close it.

And now here we are. Hired a coach on the cheap and paid dearly for it.

After that failure we tried to rectify it with the Archie hire, and so far how has that worked out?

We had our chance and we blew it

Anyone remember what other coaching names were said to be our finalists when we hired Cox? Would be interesting to see where they landed and what their records have been like since we passed on them for Cox.

1. David Cox
2. John Becker
3. Joe Dooley
4.Micah Shrewsberry

What are your thoughts ?

Given that Cox was already the assistant and had a clause in his contract where he was due money if he did not succeed, it was generally thought the process was more show than real going through the proper state hiring rules posting it and interviewing several candidates.

John Becker has continued to win at Vermont and is in the NCAA once again. Had won the AE and garnered four NCAA bids since 2018. Has been mentioned with several mid level jobs but appears to never have been offered something better. His rep took a bit of a hit with the alleged rape by a starter and admin coverup at UVM.

Joe Dooley took the job at East Carolina that year and has gone 101-119 since 2018 with no postseason bids.

Micah Shrewsbury went on to become head coach at Penn State and now Notre Dame. Three year head coaching record of 50-51 but did get Penn State to the second round of the NCAA in 2023 with a final season record of 23-14.

Who cares now?

All that matters is what happens now.

I'm not convinced whatsoever that Archie will succeed here.

Sometimes things just dont work out.

Someday we will find a coach that will get us back to the Dance. As long as the committment is there to do it.
