Tough break for HC Alexander and Belmont, after winning their last 6 of 8 regular season MVC games.
Two of their top players both sophomores have decided to enter the portal:
With Monday being the start of free agency, I'm guessing that every coach in the country is thinking, in their own necessitated order:
- who's leaving
- who do I want to leave/stay
- who's out there?
good thing there's a player personnel guy. I'm waiting for someone to identify as a portaler, while their team is still in it.
You forgot the most important question. For URI, it's Tom, how much do I have to get a point guard in here?
edit: Not sure of portalers, but we do have a fired coach in the tournament.
I love the fired coach story...that's fantastic... My brother in law is an Arizona season ticket holder, I told him that's a tough draw for them.
Arizona is hugely capable of the wrong side of an upset...and now they have to play dead man walking coach...he said. "oh %$#*%" or something like that.

Get ready for full blown free agency ! Teams are turning down NIT invites and going to start breaking down film tomorrow! That’s where we are at
Tom Crean was against teams turning down NIT invites and he kind of has a point. As much as I don’t like Providence I have a lot of respect for them for playing in it.

Yeah I saw that on ESPN , but something has to happen if 7 teams going to turn down invitations

the field needs to expand drastically
w our crap ass OOC schedule - no way we go dancing anytime soon unless we win a10 tourney
Granted our OOC wasn't the best, but it didn't prevent us from the opportunity of going to the NCAAT.
3 teams in the Mohegan Sun Tourn. in the NCAAT- Northwestern, Wash. State, and Miss. State.
Charleston, Yale, and Wagner are all in the NCAAT.
it forces us to win the a10 tourney... i don't like those odds.. even w a very good team
ECR I think our OOC will improve as we get better.
My point is, we did have some good teams on our schedule and wouldn't have been forced to win the A10T providing we did well.

Five out of thirteen OOC opponents in the NCAA field is actually a pretty good ratio. Only two of nineteen A-10 games were against tournament teams.
Our strength of schedule has landed at 102 by KenPom and Sports Reference, which kind of shows how hard it is to peg this at the beginning of the year, just looking at team names.

Our SOS was also much better cause the A10 overall was MUCH better this year.

I'm probably jinxing things, but I'm surprised that our season ended 6 days ago and we've only had two players announce they were heading to the portal so far. I really expected a flood

Let’s hope so. Why would we want a lot of these players back?

Well the two that entered knew they were going to be asked the leave, the reason others haven’t left is because they haven’t had their end of the year meeting yet / want to stay here, but they aren’t useful

I wasn't sure about when those meetings were taking place and figured some if not all had already happened

It might be smart to land players from A-10 level or higher instead of hoping players can make the leap from a lower level.
It depends on the players and their fit.
Several players from lower conferences succeeded and starred in the A10.

Well that is the plan, but now it seems all about the money?

The plan is to land the best players regardless of where they come from.
Their star center Josh Cohen (16 pts/ 7 rebs) just entered the portal.
Also from Umass - Sawyer Mayhugh and Robert Davis
These dudes don't wanna play in the MAC.
Sure, but they're still in the A10 next year. I haven't heard one way or the other if we're allowing them to play in the conference tournament next year. If so it seems you're better off staying for the 2024-25 season then jumping before the team goes to the MAC

UMass announced their departure before the 2024 A-10 Tournament and were allowed to play. Why then would 2025 be different? I do not believe that the A-10 has ever barred a team from its tournament that was leaving and it has had a lot of teams move on.

Good point. I just know other conferences don't allow teams to compete in the tournament their last year in the conference
Let teams that are leaving play in the tournament. Just make sure the refs you pay understand their opponent is expected to prevail. Adds a win to the record of whoever draws them.

UMass is about implode, brace for impact
Already lost Cohen, and a freshman. Hearing Cross will be entering too
Back in January and early February there was discussion on the UMass Board about Cross and money he would be seeking. Expect Cross to seek out the best deal and enter the portal. His market value increased this season and he could return to P5, as can Cohen. They were both 1st team A10 selections from the 4-Seeded Team.

Dubs just entered the portal.
I'm not sure he was ever going to be athletic enough to be an A10 regular. I guess the hope was that he would stick around and get to the point where he was usable as a reserve sniper. Unfortunately he was one of the few that seemed to give a shit down the stretch

I am a little disappointed.
He seemed like a hard worker, gave good effort, and had shooting skills.
